Athletics has been an integral part of the life of the Brandeis University community since the department was founded in 1951. The roster of coaches who have been part of the Judges' family reads like a Who's Who of Boston luminaries, from Bud Collins and the men's tennis team in the late 1950s and early 1960s to K.C. Jones leading the men's basketball squad in the 1960s to the more recent tenure of Chris Ford. Over the years, Brandeis has won NCAA team championships in men's soccer and men's cross country and 24 individual titles, with numerous more NCAA appearances and All-Americans in their ranks. In the Sears Directors' Cup, a measure of the overall success of the athletic programs of colleges and universities across the nation, the Judges have finished among the top 100 in Division III in five of the eight years the standings have been compiled. Brandeis competes in the University Athletic Association (UAA), a unique Division III affiliation. The Judges' conference opponents include the University of Rochester, New York University, Emory University (Atlanta), Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh), Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland), the University of Chicago and Washington University (St. Louis), giving Brandeis athletes a chance to see some of the most exciting cities in the country on a regular basis. In addition to including some of the most prestigious academic institutions in Division III, the UAA also includes some of the most successful athletic programs in the nation, giving Brandeis athletes a chance to prove themselves against the best Division III has to offer.

The event remains in the Olympics, called the modern pentathlon, but it involves five different sports: shooting, fencing, swimming, riding and cross-country running. En route to its eight wins, Wellesley earned key victories against Boston University, Tufts, Dartmouth, Smith, Vassar, University of New Hampshire and University of Massachusetts. Wellesley placed second in its own Wellesley Fencing Invitational with decisive wins over Smith and Vassar and placed seventh at the 2004 New England Championships. The Blue placed fourth in Epee, ninth in Sabre and 10th in Foil en route to the seventh place finish. Individually, first-year Sarah Abraham (Austin, Texas) paced the Blue placing second overall in Epee, while junior captain Irena Inman (Bedford, N.H.) placed fourth overall. Both Abraham and Inman earned Northeast Fencing Conference (NFC) All-Star honors. Inman, captain of the 2003-2004 team, earned second-team honors at Epee, while Abraham, also an Epee fencer, earned first-team honors for the Blue. It is the third time in Inman's career that she has earned Northeast Fencing Conference All-Star recognition, receiving the honor as a first-year and as a sophomore during the 2001-2002 and the 2002-2003 seasons.

College Athletes Already Are Fairly Compensated
By Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. Executive Vice President University of Notre Dame On the SportsTalk page of the Feb. 16 Chicago Tribune the question was posed: "Should college athletes be paid for helping to generate millions of dollars of revenue for universities?" Despite the loaded nature of the question (or, perhaps, because of it), I would like to make a couple of points that often are overlooked when discussing this issue. In brief, proponents of the play-for-pay concept believe that since major college athletic programs produce large sums of money through television rights fees, bowl games, ticket sales and other means, student-athletes deserve more than just a grant-in-aid for their efforts. This perspective would have us believe the financial arrangement between universities and student-athletes is unfairly balanced in favor of the institution. A university realizes millions in revenue and all the athlete gets is a measly scholarship - or so the argument goes. What gets lost in this equation is that those scholarships add up. At Notre Dame, for example, grants-in-aid to student-athletes are worth about $5 million annually. Add to that the millions spent on travel, housing, equipment, health care and other costs and pretty soon, in the words of Everett Dirksen, you're talking real money.

http://www.its.caltech.edu/~fencing/coach.html
Coaching Head Coach: George Clovis, 626-395-3251, GeorgeClovis@email.msn.com Coach George Clovis, at Westerns [Official line on the coach, from the Athletics Department] George Clovis enters his 21st season as head men's and women's fencing coach at Caltech. This is actually Clovis' second stint in Pasadena. He served as head coach from 1976-89 before taking a few years off. He returned to Caltech as a volunteer assistant coach in 1991 and reassumed control of the Beavers fencing program in 1995.
An accomplished fencer, Clovis earned many accolades during his competitive days. In 1971, he was a finalist in sabre at the U.S. National Championships. During his collegiate days, Clovis won the Western Intercollegiate epee title as well as USFA individual titles in the state of Arizona in all three weapons. In addition, he captained five Pacific Coast champion sabre squads as well as several other foil and epee medalists. Clovis earned his B.S. in Physical Education from Arizona in 1961. He also received his M.S. in Physical Education from Arizona in 1962.
Coach Clovis on Caltech: The education at Caltech is top class and there is an opportunity to learn a new dimension to life that most of our fencers have never experienced before. They learn to take personal and group responsibility and find that with work and commitment, they can succeed. There is an opportunity for some to achieve at the regional and national level. Coaching at Caltech is rewarding because I am able to help students with little or no athletic experience blossom into successful athletes, thereby gaining tremendously in self-esteem and confidence. Above all I am proud of the behavior and sportsmanship shown by our athletes through the years that I have been coaching here.
