Physical Education at Harvard-Westlake Physical Education is a character-shaping program focused on developing a positive attitude about oneself and providing physically, emotionally, and intellectually challenging experiences. The program encourages students to discover active pursuits that are fun and stimulating enough to become a regular part of their lives. Students are asked to set and achieve realistic goals and challenged to improve performance. Often the best route to these goals is with the cooperation and assistance of classmates. The total program involves more than physical activity. Each student must raise his or her fitness level and understand its relationship to lifetime physical and mental wellness. Some will choose to participate in interscholastic sports. Others will choose to fulfill their requirement through physical education classes. All 10 th graders and other students new to the Upper School will be tested for overall fitness with attention to individual areas of weakness. Students who show a specific weakness or cannot pass the test ess will be placed in fitness classes specifically designed to bring the student to an acceptable level. The test is scored according to a point system based on national and school norms. Our goal is to identify students in the lower percentiles and offer prescriptions for improvement. Students in any grade will be directed to fitness options until they are able to pass the test.

Over the past ten years, Princeton Day School athletes have won over 30 Prep A, Prep B or Conference championships in a wide variety of sports, including boys' cross country, tennis, fencing, golf, baseball, lacrosse, basketball and ice hockey, and girls' soccer, softball, basketball, fencing, volleyball, lacrosse, field hockey, figure skating, ice hockey, and tennis. Several goals underlie our athletics and physical education programs at all grade levels: to provide students with avenues of achievement in addition to academics, to help them grow in self-confidence and self-motivation, and to nurture lifelong habits of fitness. We also allow student athletes who train in other sports the opportunity to get credit for their work, through our unique Independent Study Project. In recent years the project has helped PDS athletes achieve regional and national recognition in ballet, swimming, diving, and horseback riding.
In the middle school, interscholastic sports begin in seventh and eighth grade with field hockey, soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse and softball for girls and football, soccer, basketball, lacrosse, baseball and tennis for boys. In addition, there are coed teams in cross country, ice hockey, figure skating, and fencing.

BC Announces Plan to Balance Men's and Women's Varsity Athletic Opportunities
Boston College has unveiled a five-year strategic plan to ensure equal opportunity for its male and female student-athletes, an initiative which includes additional scholarships and resources for women's sports programs. Athletic Director Gene DeFilippo outlined the plan on June 5, noting that, when fully implemented, it will add 47 scholarships to various women's sports programs. Over the next two to three years, he added, the University also will add women's rowing as a varsity sport. By the 2002-03 academic year, the total number of scholarships awarded, and number of opportunities for participation, will be "virtually equal" among men and women, he said. "We feel this plan shows Boston College is committed to providing a great experience for all our student-athletes, and providing equitable opportunities for women in particular to participate in intercollegiate athletics," DeFilippo said. "While these concerns are common to many institutions, Boston College hopes to take the lead nationally in leveling the playing field." As part of the plan, three men's varsity sports - lacrosse, water polo and wrestling - will be designated club sports. However, this transition will be gradual, DeFilippo said, and no student-athletes already recruited to participate in those programs at the varsity level will be affected.

Athletics Student-Athlete Advisory Council 2003-04 CSU Student-Athlete Handbook Formed as a voice for CSU student-athletes, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council has successfully served not only the participants in intercollegiate athletics at CSU but by creating a tie between Cleveland State and the community. SAAC was developed by the CSU athletic department to: • Promote communication between athletics administration and student-athletes. • Disseminate information. • Provide feedback and insight into athletics department issues. • Build a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams. • Solicit student-athlete responses to proposed conference and NCAA legislation. • Organize community service efforts. • Promote a positive student-athlete image on campus. SAAC members helped out at a Special Olympics swimming competition in the fall. SAAC representatives have dedicated themselves to helping and promoting their fellow student-athletes, Cleveland State University and the community of Northeast Ohio. Their efforts have helped to enhance a tradition of involvement by CSU student-athletes.

The 2000 - 2001 athletic season saw student-athletes representing Queen’s (Golden Gaels Athletics) in fifty (50) Interuniversity Team and Club sanctioned sports. As such, Queen’s can lay claim to the largest Interuniversity Team and Club program in Canada. Last year four hundred and eighty-one (481) men and four hundred and sixty-two (462) women competed on Golden Gael teams. Equally important to participation statistics is that one hundred and seventy-six (176) student-athletes gained academic conference all-star status, emblematic of student-athletes who attained an 80% or better overall academic average. Queen’s continues to be among the leaders across the country in this student-athlete academic achievement category. Student-athlete teams representing Queen’s captured four (4) Ontario University Athletics (O.U.A.) team championships. Women’s Basketball won its first O.U.A. title in 32 years; Women’s Figure Skating won its seventh consecutive title; Women’s Synchronized Swimming its fifth consecutive title; and Women’s Fencing won its fourth title since 1992. Queen’s teams also brought home four overall second place championships and had five third place standings. On the varsity club side the Queen’s Mountain Biking racing team won the Ontario title; our Triathlon Club won the provincial University Team championship and our Queen’s sailors captured the Canadian University title and attained the #1 North American ranking in the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Associating (I.C.Y.R.A.).

The NCAA News May 10, 2004
Sports-sponsorship study identifies continuing gender trends
Declines remain in some sports, but net decrease in men's teams is lowest in almost 10 years
The most recent NCAA report on sports sponsorship and participation rates shows a continuing trend in the decline of sponsorship of specific men's sports, while the number of teams in specific women's sports continues to increase. The 2003 NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report shows a net drop of 11 men's teams over all three divisions and a net increase of 60 women's teams in all three divisions compared to the 2002 report, resulting in a net gain of 49 athletics teams in 2002-03. The teams-dropped-and-added category excludes schools that either added or dropped membership in the NCAA in the given time frame. This is a trend that has continued from 2001-02, when there was a net loss of 17 men's teams and a net gain of 111 women's teams compared with the previous year. That resulted in a net gain of 94 teams, nearly double the net gain of teams in 2002-03. But the net decrease in the number of men's teams in the most recent report was tied for the lowest such net decrease since 1995-96. The highest reported net loss in the last 15 years was in 1997-98, when there was a net loss of 160 men's teams from the previous year.
