Four Tar Heel teams won Atlantic Coast Conference championships. Meanwhile, cross country and women's track and field star Shalane Flanagan won three NCAA championships in '02-'03. Fourteen Carolina teams earned bids to the NCAA Tournament or ranked in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships in their respective sport: women's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, baseball, men's golf, women's golf, softball, men's tennis, women's tennis and women's outdoor track and field. There are always many people "behind the scenes" who, while unknown to most, are a very important component of the team. Here at Columbia, we are very fortunate to have a talented group of administrators who work with the Columbia Fencing Team and who are truly supportive of the Columbia Fencing Team. Without the assistance of these individuals, our program would not be as strong as it is. This is John Reeves, Columbia University's Director of Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics. John is the person who overseas all of the many athletic programs. When the Fencing Team needed new scoring machines, he is the one who gave us a special authorization to obtain three of the same kind of machines that were used in the Olympics; he believes we should have the best of everything that is possible. John is a true supporter of all Columbia teams, from the most visible to the the least visible. Here is Merry Ormsby holding one of Columbia's many personal-sized NCAA Fencing Championships Trophies. She certainly earned it. Merry is one of Columbia's Associate Athletic Directors. She is also the Senior Women's Athletic Administrator. Merry knows fencing. Merry is not only the administrator in the department directly responsible for fencing, she is also the former Chair of the NCAA Fencing Committee. Information Literacy Blog Introducing First-Year Student-Athletes to the Library: The Michigan State University Experience Michael Lorenzen and Nancy Lucas Literature Review A great deal of literature deals with students-athletes in higher education. This paper will focus on those studies that establish the student-athlete as a special population on campus that is treated differently than other student populations. In particular, the negative stereotyping of athletes has resulted in widespread bias that poses difficulties for the student-athlete in receiving an education. It will also examine the efforts of academic librarians to reach the student-athlete population and make libraries more accessible to them. The negative views of faculty in particular can harm student-athletes. One study (Leach and Conners 1984) indicated that faculty held more negative attitudes toward student-athletes than do other students, administrators, and alumni. Leach and Conners postulated that faculty perceive that athletics is incompatible with the basic values of academic integrity and academic excellence. A more recent study (Engstrom, Sedlacek, and McEwen 1995) confirmed that faculty do view student-athletes (particularly those in revenue producing sports) less favorably than they do other students. For example, faculty perceived more favorably students who were not involved with athletics getting a scholarship, driving an expensive car, being mentioned in the campus paper, or even receiving a good grade in their class.

Archives Head Coach: Gamil Kaliouby E-Mail: Coach Kaliouby B.S., Ain Shims University (Cairo Egypt) M.S., Egypt's Military Academy Second year of coaching at Wellesley Gamil Kaliouby enters his seventh season and second year back as head fencing coach at Wellesley College this season after a five-year absence. Kaliouby returns to the Wellesley campus, where he coached the fencing team from 1992-97. He was instrumental in Wellesley qualifying for the 1994 and 1995 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships and in the development of Heidi Chang, the 1995 NCAA Epee Runner-Up and NCAA Most Outstanding Fencer. Haverford Home Page Student-Athletes Honored With Commencement Awards Senior women's track competitor Rebecca Bockow, an Honors biology major, formerly a soccer and squash player as well, took home one of the College's highest academic honors, the first Clementine Cope Fellowship. Bockow was joined by 2002 women's soccer captain Anna Filip in receiving the Marian E. Koshland Book Prize, named in memory of the late scientist, Board of Managers member, mother of two Haverfordians and mother in-law of a third. The Koshland Prize honors outstanding performance in senior biology research. Another runner, women's cross-country and track star and frequent Centennial Conference champion Kristen Wilson, saw her name appear in several honor categories. Kristen graduated Phi Beta Kappa with High Honors in psychology, while also earning the David Olton '64 Award for exceptional work and great promise in her major field. (Olton, late professor and chair of Johns Hopkins University's psychology department) was commodore of Haverford's varsity sailing team when the Fords still ruled the waves in the early 1960s.
