Fencing The art of swordsmanship has been practiced since Biblical times and has evolved through the ages from deadly combat to an Olympic sport. Trigger-fast reflexes and a quick mind are needed to be able to strike without being struck. Three swords are used in fencing competitions: the foil , which has a flexible rectangular blade; the (pronounced EPP-ay), which has a rigid triangular blade; and the sabre , which has a flexible triangular blade with a blunt point. 85. Sport Information
One new olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta Official Medal sport in Barcelona, 1992; Basketball Budo (Japanese archery/wrestling/fencing) 1964, Tokyo;
http://www.ausport.gov.au/info/factsheets/demo.html
Olympic Factsheets Since 1904 there have been a variety of demonstration sports held as part of the Games but not as official events eligible for medals. Some of the events have later become official sports, such as basketball, badminton, baseball and tennis. Originally, demonstration sports and events were included as an opportunity to showcase sports or events which were unique to the country hosting the Games. They have since evolved into a much more important aspect of the Olympic Games. Today, participation in the Olympics (Winter or Summer) as a demonstration sport or event often serves as a stepping stone in the application for consideration as a future Olympic sport. The sport must first be recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) under the conditions that it has an International Federation (IF) and that this Federation has held a World Championship competition. The sport may then be included as a demonstration sport, and the sport's International Federation may make an application to the IOC for consideration as an Olympic Sport. This application process must take place a minimum of six years before a scheduled Olympic Games. The demonstration sports at Barcelona were Taekwondo (a form of Martial Arts), Roller Hockey and Basque pelota, a local ball game, having appeared in Paris in 1924 and Mexico in 1968. There are no proposed demonstration sports on the Atlanta programme. One new Olympic sport will be introduced in Atlanta - women's softball; and three new disciplines will be introduced - women's soccer, mountain bike racing and beach volleyball. Sports that have been demonstration sports in the past, include:

Live by the Sword
A-Bout Fencing was started in February 2002 to bring the sport of Fencing to Dickson, Tennessee, a growing community 40 miles west of Nashville. Since then, we have taught the sport of Fencing to over 40 children and adults, some of whom compete on the State and National level. A-Bout Fencing is dedicated to the grass roots development of Fencing in Tennessee, offering some of the most affordable club memberships within the state. Whether you want to be a serious competitor or just enjoy the recreational side of the sport, A-Bout Fencing is for you.
What is Fencing?
Fencing, simply put, is the sport of swordplay… Having it’s beginnings in ancient times, Fencing has evolved into a high tech extreme sport. Two opponents battle back and forth trying to gain an advantage in distance over the other. When that advantage is seen, the attack begins. Fencing is as much a contact sport as any other with many of the competitors having the battle scars to prove it.
Fencing isn’t just one form; there are three weapons each with its own technique, targets and styles. Foil, a thrusting-only weapon is traditionally the first of the three weapons to learn. Epee, a thrusting-only weapon does not have the complex rules that Foil and Sabre have. Sabre, a thrusting or cutting weapon, is generally the most aggressive of the three weapons and not for the "feint" of heart.

87. The History Of Fencing
Early olympic Games featured events for Masters, and until recently fencing was the only olympic sport that has included professionals.
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~fencing/hisfencing.htm
S wordfighting as a sport has existed since ancient Egyptian times and has been practised in many forms in various cultures since then. Although jousting and tournament combat were popular sports in the European middle ages, modern F.I.E. fencing owes more to the unarmoured duelling forms that evolved from 16th century rapier combat. Rapiers were edged having a military role for thrusting into chinks of heavy armour. The original Spanish school, under masters such as Narvaez and Thibault was steeped in technical precision requiring much practise to master. In the late 16th and early 17th centuries, rapier fencing spread to Italy and masters like Agrippa and Capo Ferro developed a more pragmatic school, introducing linear fencing and the lunge.
B y the 18th century the rapier had evolved to a shorter, lighter design, popularised in France, called the small sword or fleuret (due to the leather safety tip resembling a flower). The small sword often had an edge, to prevent the opponent from grabbing the blade, although the weapon was mainly used for thrusting. The light weight made a more complex and defensive style possible, and the French masters developed a school based on subtlety of movement, double-time parries and complex attacks. The small sword is identical to the modern foil.

ABOUT THE VERMONT FENCING ALLIANCE Renaissance art, Olympic sport, championship club . . . now registering for winter classes in Middlebury and Charlotte!
Fencing is an exciting Olympic sport which develops strength, agility, fitness and mental focus. Both branches of the Vermont Fencing Alliance, Middlebury (founded in 1992) and Charlotte (founded in 1997), are US Fencing Association sanctioned clubs. We offer an active program of recreational fencing and competitive training for people age 9 through adult. Our activities include foil and epee classes at all levels, open fencing,a regional league for friendly competition, and travel to meets throughout New England and beyond. Whether you want to go for the gold, or just try the "sport of kings" for fun and exercise, the VFA warmly welcomes beginners.
Our unique Junior Team program is open to up to 10 experienced fencers ages 12-18. In return for their effort and dedication, Junior Team members receive free instruction, extra training and coaching at meets. Last season, VFA juniors took 1 gold and 3 bronze medals in regional age group championships, and three achieved national rankings based on perfomance in major tournaments. Every year, VFA fencers qualify for and compete in the national Junior Olympics (last February, 7 of them went to Colorado). The success of the program is attested to by the medals the young athletes bring home, and more importantly, by the fun they have and the lessons they learn about sportsmanship and teamwork.

Ananova: Olympic sport guide - Fencing A guide to the Olympic sport of fencing Technical details Fights take place on a piste 1.8m wide by 14m long, which has various boundary markings as well as a compound in the floor to neutralise the electronic scoring if a weapon hits the floor. There are three types of weapon: epee (heavy and rigid with a triangular blade) foils (light and flexible with a rectangular blade) and sabre (lighter version of the cavalry sword). All weapons are wired to record electrically when a hit is scored. In foil and epee, hits can only be scored by the point of the weapon hitting the torso. In sabre, the weapon's edge also scores and hits can be made to the arms and head. Fencers wear white, protective clothing, including a wire mesh face guard. For foil and sabre events, competitors also wear a metallic overjacket which conducts electricity as part of the scoring system and is worn over the jacket, covering the valid target area. Spectators can see when a hit has been scored because a lamp lights up on the scoring equipment.

Kruse will compete in the foil at the Athens Olympics British fencing will be represented by Richard Kruse and Louise Bond-Williams at this summer's Olympics.
Kruse will compete in the foil category and Bond-Williams will fight in the sabre class after both impressed at the European Olympic qualifying event. Kruse won gold, while Bond-Williams took silver in Belgium on Sunday. Britain's Olympic fencing chief Graham Watts said: "This is a fantastic achievement for British fencing and for our two most talented fencers." He added: "Both Richard and Louise have made the top eight in the world championships within the last two years and they have the ability and experience to perform well at the Olympic Games. "The qualification standards get tougher every Olympiad and we only had one fencer in a seeded position to qualify and so to achieve two places, with the added bonus of topping the medal table in Ghent is excellent."
