Stanford Fencer's Olympic Dreams Come To An End
POSTED: 10:39 pm PST March 31, 2004 UPDATED: 8:48 am PDT April 15, 2004 NEW YORK Iris Zimmerman, the 2000 Olympian who took a year off from her studies at Stanford to attempt to make the 2004 U.S. team, has fallen short of her goal to compete in Athens. Zimmernan, who at 14 was the first American ever to claim a world championship on any level in the sport of fencing and came within an eyelash of a medal in Sydney, failed by just two points to accumulate enough points on the World Cup circuit to qualify for the Games. On Wednesday, FIE, the world governing body for fencing, announced the list of fencers who have qualified for Athens through individual rankings.

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

1.5 Is fencing going to be eliminated from the Olympics?
Olympic fencing appears to be safe for the present, and was recently expanded to include Women's Epee. Since the IOC perpetually changes its roster of Olympic sports, nothing is certain in future games. Although fencing is one of only four sports to have been involved in every modern Olympic Games since their inception in 1896, it has been mentioned in the past as one of the disciplines that may be eliminated from future Games. According to Gilbert Felli, Sports Director of the International Olympic Committee, the IOC plans to refine future games in various ways, including:
  • limiting the number of athletes to 15000
  • increasing participation by women
  • eliminating "so-called artificial team events"
  • limiting sports of a similar type
  • modernizing the Olympic program
  • encouraging sports that provide a good television spectacle
In the last decade fencing has undergone numerous revisions to its rules and structure to improve its value as a spectator sport, perhaps in the hopes of improving its Olympic viability.

The Seoul Olympic Sports Promotion Foundation (SOSFO) has been devoted to the creation of a healthy society since successfully hosting the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. SOSFO is providing support to promote national sports, research in sports science, and is fostering the sound development of our younger generation.
Following the World Cup and the enforcement of a 5-day workweek, the national desire for sports has increased to new heights. SOSFO is performing pivotal roles in the promotion of the ever-expanding importance of sports in society's new focus on leisure time.
SOSFO will provide more effective financial support through the national sports promotion fund, which has contributed to turning Korea into a world sports power. It will expand the range of support so that more people, particularly those in the low-income groups or those living in underdeveloped areas, can equally benefit from the programs offered.
Towards this end, SOSFO intends to expand its sports centers to all areas of the country to offer low-cost first-class sports opportunities for all persons. It has actively supported and will continue to promote the installment of grass and urethane-surfaced sports facilities on school playgrounds.

UPDATE: Paralympic athletes sue U.S. Olympic Committee for disability discrimination . July 28, 2003 Paralympians Scot Hollonbeck, of Atlanta, Georgia, Tony Iniguez, of Aurora, Illinois, and Jacob Heilveil of Bothell, Washington, said in the lawsuit that the USOC violates federal law by providing benefits - such as elite training, coaching, performance incentives and health insurance - to Olympic athletes but denies those benefits to Paralympic athletes. Bad Sports:
U.S. Olympic Committee thumbs nose at Paralympics By Josie Byzek. Sidebar: Vertical Integration Josie Byzek writes frequently about disability rights. Not a single Olympic dollar will go to Paralympic athletes for the upcoming games in 2000. That was the word from U.S. Olympic Committee Executive Director Dick Schultz at a mid-April Colorado Springs meeting of the organization's Committee on Sports for the Disabled. No sponsorships would be pursued by the USOC for the Paralympics either, said Schultz. This will leave Paralympians effectively without funding for their events. For amateur sports in America, all roads lead to the U. S. Olympic Committee. The 1978 Amateur Sports Act required the USOC to involve disabled athletes, but "it was so gray the Committee could always wiggle out of having to do anything," says five-time Paralympic medalist Scot Hollonbeck. A 1998 amendment now makes the requirement clear. Yet USOC support is "just not there for Paralympians," says the U.S. Disabled Athletes' Fund's Andy Fleming.
