Russian men won five of the six events, including four gold, two silver and a bronze, at Atlanta. Each competition has a single-elimination format. Teams consist of three fencers, and each duels each member of the opposing team. Event has been part of the Olympics since the first modern games in 1896. Two sisters - Iris and Felicia Zimmermann - help make up the United States women's foil team. Ann Marsh is the third member of the team. Foilist Cliff Bayer, ranked ninth in the world, is the man with the best chance to win a medal for the United States in the European-dominated sport. The finer points

The next two take over the score at that point and continue until one fencer has 10 points. The cycle continues until one team scores 45 points.

A Brief History of Fencing in Canada
Fencing is a modern and exciting sport, often described as trying to play chess while running the 100-metre dash! It's hard to believe that this thoroughly sophisticated sport has emerged from the serious and deadly combat practiced by the Three Mousquetaires. Fencing is truly an Olympic sport, having been involved since the first modem Olympic took place in Athens in 1896. In addition, Fencing holds the distinguished honour of being one of only four sports, which have participated in every Olympic Games since their inauguration. Canadian fencing dates back to 1816 when Maitre Girard opened the first fencing school in Montréal. The first Canadian Championships were held in 1902. It was not until the announcement of the 1976 Olympics and incorporation of the Canadian Fencing Federation in 1971, that the Federal Government provided financial assistance to develop elite athletes for the Montréal Olympiad, provided the stimulus for Canadian fencers to steadily improve their performance on the international scene. The CFF is a non-profit, amateur sports association and is the national governing body of fencing. It includes ten provincial fencing associations, which in turn represent eighty local clubs from coast to coast. Its mandate is to establish, develop and support fencing in Canada and to represent Canada on the international scene.

Why Too Many Olympic Sports Are Neither
    By Jonathon Kahn

The modern Olympics has consisted of an eclectic and heady mix: archery and equestrian, track and field and swimming, wrestling and weightlifting. But where the Olympics' eclecticism was once a strength, today's version of diversity is its greatest flaw. While people often complain about the opening up of the Olympiad to professionals or the lavishing of vast inequities of attention, prestige, and money on different sports, the real problem is the inclusion of two (occasionally overlapping) categories: 1) Events, often high-profile, for which the Olympics is not that sport's premier competition. These are nothing more than gussied-up exhibitions. 2) Events that are called sports but really aren't. Call these the bogus or silly sports. The combination of the two does ruthless damage to the notion that the Olympics celebrates world-class contests of athletic excellence. Continue Article Equally ridiculous are the bogus events. Everyone's favorite is synchronized swimming, which

    FENCING
    The Worlds Oldest Modern Sport
When most Americans think of swordplay, the images that come to mind are either of the lumbering power of armor-clad knights battling with broadswords, or of the swashbuckling flair of Errol Flynn and other screen duelers of the '30s and '40s. In what it requires and how it is conducted, Olympic fencing resembles these two clichés about as much as this summer's Opening Ceremony will call to mind the ritual sacrifice of animals that once signalled the start of competition. The modern Olympic fencer trains for years, honing agility, quickness, and subtlety of movement. The sport has been described as "chess with muscles," suggesting that complicated strategy lies behind the thrusts and parries that punctuate a duel. Fencers of today employ a strange combination of archaic and modern customs; combatants still salute before a match and wear the traditional white uniforms and masks, but scoring is now determined by electronic padding worn by the combatants that registers when a hit takes place with flashing, color-coded lights. As suggested by the continuing power of the myths of swordfighting knights and adventurers, the fencing tradition is rich and storied. Like fellow Olympic sports archery and javelin, fencing has its roots in ancient combat. Around 1200 BC, the Egyptians began the custom of fencing for sport, as seen by images in decorative reliefs from that period depicting knobs on the end of weapons, earflaps and other protective garb. Sword craftsmanship evolved through the ages, from the short, wide swords favored by the Greeks and Romans to the heavy two-handed broadswords in vogue during the age of chivalry. After the advent of gunpowder and firearms, armor became obsolete and lighter swords gained popularity as the sidearm of choice for European officers and gentlemen.

We will be painting the Club on Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13. The Club will be closed these days so that we can get it painted, and we are asking for help from those available. On Thursday, the Advanced Practice will end at 8:00 p.m. so that we can take everything into the basement. We will then have a Final Paint Prep Work session on Friday evening, June 11th, starting at 6:00 p.m. We will also need help on Saturday, June 12th, starting at 8:00 a.m. The ceiling and walls will be sprayed, but we need people to help paint the wall in the hallway and to do trim work. We appreciate your understanding, and hope that this does not inconvenience any of you. The Club should look much better after a much-needed update! Thanks. Permalink Comments (0)
    Buckie Leach Seminar
On May 22 and 23, the Three Rivers Fencing Center (TRFC) hosted a very special Fencing and Coaching Seminar at the Pine-Richland High School.  It was conducted by Buckie Leach, coach of several international champions, 1996 and 2000 USA Olympic Coach, and current coach at the New York Fencers Club.  Many fencers took advantage of the Seminars, which covered beginner and advanced tactics for developing fencers. Many coaches also took advantage of the Seminars to improve their coaching skills. Thank you to all who attended, to TRFC Head Coach, Iana Dakova, for organizing the event, and to Buckie Leach for taking time out of his schedule to come to Pittsburgh and share his talents and experiences. TRFC will continue to sponsor events to improve the quality of fencing - stay tuned for more events in the future!
