Fencing Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Fencing is one of only four sports that have been featured in every modern Olympic Games, beginning in 1896. Fencing evolved from an ancient form of combat, and is practiced indoors. The fencer tries to score the total hits needed to win, while at the same time dexterously avoids being hit by the opponent. The first rules of Fencing appeared in 1474, in Spain . The first handbook describing positions, lines and parries came out in 1530. In 1537, the Academie d'Armes was founded in Paris . The foil made its debut in the 17th century: being a lighter weapon, it made exercise more pleasant. The mask became part of the fencer's equipment in 1780, to protect the face, something that had previously been considered insulting. By 1815, fencing had developed to such an extent that there was detailed literature about it. The Italians, the Hungarians and the French were the first nations to create their own great Fencing schools, which show great differences when compared with one another. For a long time, they cultivated a style of fencing that reflected their own models, and today all three are among the great world fencing nations. Over time, Soviet and German fencers who had learnt much from the three prototype styles, exploited their physical attributes, their special characteristics and mentality to create their own national schools of fencing.

Fencing is one of only four sports that have been featured in every modern Olympic Games, beginning in 1896. Fencing calls for adaptability, inventiveness, good organization, and patience. This is achieved by good partnership between the fencer and the fencing master. Hard effort is needed if a competitor is to be ready for a match, and long hours must be spent in training, where great attention and discipline are needed. Description Fencing evolved from an ancient form of combat, and is practiced indoors. The fencer tries to score the total hits needed to win, while at the same time dexterously avoids being hit by the opponent. Foil, ιpιe and sabre are the three weapons used in the sport of Fencing, in which both men and women compete. The target areas, as well as the blade, differ for the three weapons.

Eventing Remains Olympic Sport Changes to the eventing format guarantee the sport a spot this summer in Athens. By Jo Meszoly Three-day eventing will remain a part of the summer Olympic Gamesat least for the foreseeable future. Last year, the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) executive board voted to keep the sport in the Olympic program through the 2008 Beijing Games under a new, shorter format proposed by the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) late last year.
Beginning with the 2004 Games in Athens, the Olympic eventing format will change from a CCI (three-day event) to a CIC (international horse trial), with a shortened cross country phase. The new format will consist of a dressage test, a cross-country obstacle coursewithout the roads and tracks or the steeplechase phasesand finally, a show jumping phase. Riders who finish in the top 25 will go on to a second show jumping competition, which will decide individual medal winners.

Fencing Alexandra Palace is a scenic addition to London's venue list for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
The first live BBC television pictures were broadcast from 'Ally Pally' in 1936 and the reconstructed 1873 exhibition centre in Wood Green has a history of staging boxing matches. International Olympic Committee members are believed to be keen to see some events held away from the core Olympic zone. And Alexandra Palace - currently home to an indoor skating rink - has high ceilings ideally suited to indoor sports.

    (BPFA)
The sword is one of the oldest of weapons and since the 17th and 18th centuries has been used to demonstrate skill and speed, particularly in 'matters of honour'.
The Modern Olympic sport of fencing demands those same talents of speed and skill allied with fitness and stamina to produce the complete fencer. Learning the skills of attacking and defending with either foil, epee or sabre, fencers develop good coordination, balance and flexibility.
Fencing is one of the few personal combat sports that can be successfully practised from a wheelchair. The rules are exactly the same as in the able-bodied sport with a few minor additions to cover the complications of fighting from a chair.
The wheelchair fencer is clamped down at the appropriate distance and angle from the opponent which means that neither can get out of range during the bout. This makes for exciting, intense and tough competition demanding high levels of concentration with the slightest error resulting in defeat.
Fencing has developed widely around the World and the Association provides fencers to represent Great Britain at International, World and Paralympic Competitions. There are also events for the novice and junior fencer.
