Fencing

Fencing has been in existence for more than 3,000 years and has been an Olympic sport since the first modern Olympics in 1896.
There are three types of duels. They are the sabre, foil and epee. Each differs in scoring, style of fencing and swords.
  • Individual competition
Each bout consists of three three-minute periods with one-minute breaks between each. The first fencer to score 15 hits, or the fencer with the most hits when time expires, wins the bout.
  • Team competition There are three fencers to a team. Each bout is worth five points. The first team with 45 points wins the competition.
Glossary
  • En garde: The position taken before the match begins. Feint: A false attack used to elicit a response from the opponent. Fleche: A running attack. Lunge: An attacking move in which the fencer moves front leg forward and keeps back leg planted. Parry: A defensive move in which the fencer blocks the opponent's blade.

liff Bayer's fencing coach rarely let him forget the exquisite timing and savvy ruses that make Sergei Goloubitski the world's premier foilist and an Olympic gold medal favorite. Yefim Litvan's praise of Goloubitski, a fellow Ukrainian, sounded to Bayer more like taunting than motivation. "It was like taking a knife and throwing it into my side," Bayer, 23, said recently in the basement training room of the New York Athletic Club. "During a lesson he'd say, 'Do like Sergei does; watch a tape of Sergei.' He was always relating to him like a godlike character." That is, until last August, when Bayer faced Goloubitski in the quarterfinals of a World Cup fencing tournament in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was their first encounter since Goloubitski trounced Bayer, then a junior, six years before. "He wins a lot with sheer intimidation," Bayer said. "He makes good fencers look like children because of his tricks. He sets up his opponents very well. He has a lot of patience. But when he started his mind games, I didn't listen, which is what he doesn't want you to do."

History
Fencing originated as the practice of swordsmanship to prepare men for duels and warfare. A fencing match is depicted on an Egyptian temple that dates to about 1190 B.C. and the ancient Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, and Romans all had some form of fencing. The use of armor during the Middle Ages made swordsmanship virtually obsolete. The broadsword was used against armor, but only as a crude hacking device requiring sheer strength rather than skill. By making armor obsolete, the development of firearms ironically brought swordplay back into prominence during the 15th century. Soldiers once again had to acquire some skill with the sword, and fencing also emerged as a pastime for gentlemen. Fencing masters organized guilds, which taught various moves to initiates while protecting them as trade secrets from outsiders. The swords of that period were rather heavy, and cutting the opponent with the edge was emphasized. Further, since the sword was frequently a weapon of defense against thieves, tactics included wrestling holds and tricks designed to disarm or immobilize the opponent to set him up for the killing blow. Fencing as an exercise based on speed and skill began when the longer, lighter rapier was developed in Italy during the 16th century. Because of the rapier's length, opponents had to fight at a distance and quick but controlled lunges, attacking the enemy with the point of the sword, replaced cruder hacking techniques. But the rapier wasn't a good defensive weapon, so the fencer often had to use his gauntleted left hand to parry his opponent's thrusts.

The sport of Olympic fencing
This article contains a brief introduction to the sport of olympic fencing, including the rules of the sport, the equipment used, as well as a brief history.
The sport of fencing is experiencing a nationwide revival. This effort comes on the heels of a recent attempt to ban the sport form Olympic competition. The sport has also suffered from an image problem of late. Many Americans have classified the sport as violent and elitist. Ironically, fencing was one of the original nine sports in the inaugural modern Olympic Games played in Athens, Greece in 1896. It is one of only four sports that has been featured at every single Olympic competition since 1896. bodyOffer(25185) The reputation as a violent elitist sport has foiled fencers, who deem the sport a game of physical chess, a tactical masterpiece of grace and prowess that harkens own back through the annals of history, where the sport originated in ancient Egypt to where it reached its heyday in Elizabethan England. Fencing advocates also argue that fencing equipment is less expensive than hockey or football gear, and is less violent than both of the aforementioned sports. The sport of fencing incorporates agility, strength, coordination, balance, timing, and strength. In fencing, physical ability is just as important is having a strong mental edge.
