106. The History Of Fencing At Oxford
in the prewar years to being merely one among many fencing nations in the 1920 Olympics. The history of the Oxford University fencing club between the wars
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~fencing/fatoxf.htm
The Oxford University Fencing Club is one of the oldest surviving fencing clubs in the country, certainly one of the oldest outside of London. Throughout its history, it has played an important role in British fencing, and its history reflects that of the sport in general in England. The club was founded in 1891, placing it at the forefront of the revival of fencing as a sport in Great Britain which really began in the 1890's. These early years of fencing were disorganised, but characterised by a sense of fun, an enjoyment of the romance and adventure of the sport. The new Oxford club shared this character and it announced its foundation with a remarkable and elaborate event. The fencers were mostly former Blues - fencers who had fenced for the university in previous years, or at least had been members of the OUFC, but had now graduated. Thus, it was called the "Veteran's match". The OFC also organised matches against other clubs; there is a card from a match against the London Epée Club in March 1903. The OFC also put on a series of grand events. On January 13, 1902, in the words of C. de Beaumont, "A considerable sensation was caused by a 'Fencing at Home' given by Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Doyne, at the Oxford Town Hall". The elaborately printed programme, eight pages long, included "A few words on Sword play and foil play" by Egerton Castle, with photographs.

Games in 1896; team competition began in 1908. Sabre events in the Olympics are not held for women. fencing some Early history.
http://www.fate-organization.com/articals/martial arts training/sabre/sabre2.htm
The Saber or "Sabre" Sabre :also spelled SABER, heavy military sword with a long cutting edge and, often, a curved blade, derived from a Hungarian cavalry sword introduced from the Orient in the 18th century; also a light fencing weapon developed in Italy in the 19th century for dueling. The military Sabre had been relegated to a ceremonial role by the 20th century, while the fencing Sabre had become one of the sport's standard weapons. The modern fencing Sabre is no heavier than a foil-up to 500 grams (about 17.5 ounces) in weightbut it is slightly shorter105 centimeters (3 feet 5 inches) overall and 88 centimeters (2 feet 11 inches) in the blade. The blade is V-shaped, with cutting edges along its entire front and along about one-third of its back from the tip. It is rigid on its cutting edges but flexible on its flat sides. The hand guard curves back to the pommel, protecting the knuckles. Rules are basically similar to fencing with the foil, except that the opponent's whole body above the waist is the target, and touches with the cutting edges as well as the point are scored. Electrical scoring became the standard in 1992, and five touches decide the match. A retreat of more than 10 meters (about 33 feet) scores as a touch against the defender. Sabre events, with their frequent leaping and running attacks and cutting and thrusting strokes, are probably the most spectacular in fencing.

The History of Fencing: Foundations of Modern European Swordplay
Written by William M. Gaugler Lance C. Lobo

Customer Reviews This is the most fascinating mainstream fencing history since Egerton Castle's "Schools and Masters of Fence," which was written at the end of the nineteenth century. William Gaugler's writing, the product of both scholar and fencing master, is always clear and precise. "The History of Fencing" belongs in every fencing and sword library. I recommend it highly. This book is unique in that it shows the development of modern fencing using the unique understanding of a man who is a fencing master and an academic. Using only orginal sources a complete picture of the development of fencing results. The only possible weakness is the neglect of post 1945 hungarian, polish, german and russian works. Although it can be argued that form the point of view of fencing technique these are a combination of the french and italian fencing schools, in practice they are different. As inclusion of these works would have either made the work too large, or reduced the details of the material covered, exclusion of these works is not really a problem. In itself this book should be required reading for all fencing masters and for all serieus practioners of the sport.
