Don't Keep Large Wild Cats as Pets, USDA Tells Public
Statement Issued as Shelters See More Lions, Tigers, and Other Large Felines The ads are almost surreal:
Baby Black Maned Lions, one week old. Call for more info....
Cheetah(s) wanted, the younger the better....
Jefar, a Bengal tiger, is one of many exotic cats taken in by the Houston SPCA, which housed 11 large wild felines last year. The shelter has sometimes provided refuge for up to three large cats at a time.
While some states and municipalities have banned the ownership of large exotic felines as pets, federal laws are silent on this issue. But after inspectors with the U.S. Department of Agriculture repeatedly witnessed the results of improper handling of these animals, the agency released a statement discouraging ownership by amateurs. Only "qualified, trained professionals"should keep large wild cats, the USDA wrote, citing the experiences of its inspectors in the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. "[Animal care] personnel have seen too many instances where wild and exotic cats kept by untrained people have not only harmed people but suffered themselves due to poor care,"said the agency, which issued the statement at a press conference during The HSUS's Animal Care Expo 2000 in Las Vegas. The USDA does not have the authority to prohibit or regulate the ownership of large exotic cats as pets; the only large felines who fall under its purview are those used for commercial and display purposes.

Struggling to leash feral felines
Booming population prompts officials to push vaccination, neutering program
By Sandy Coleman, Globe Staff, 3/28/2004 Roger Galipeau stood in his Rochester yard recently and watched a yellow cat dart by. In the distance, another one strolled from the woods and into his barn, followed by a companion. And a gray cat was perched on the barn roof. None of them belonged to Galipeau. ADVERTISEMENT His visitors were feral cats, born in the wild and living wild. They represent a growing problem that officials and residents in Rochester as well as those in Quincy, Brockton, Norwood, and many other communities are struggling to solve. ''They're all over," said Rochester's animal control officer, Alex Wheeler. ''Domestic cats have gotten out and had babies and the babies had babies. Those are the feral cats. People also are dumping cats when going through town." In Rochester alone, there are an estimated 200 to 300 feral cats roaming backyards and woods, said Wheeler. Recently, he asked the Board of Selectmen to support a feral cat management program he is developing with the help of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He plans to catch cats in specialized traps and take them to local veterinarians to be vaccinated and spayed or neutered before being released back into their colonies. It won't be easy. First, he has to catch the cats, who shy away from people. Then he will need to raise money to cover the program's costs, estimated at $50 per cat.

87. Cougar Mauls Cherry Hill Woman
Anytime someone who is involved with captive wild felines is injured, everyonein the exotic animal world is deeply affected, said Culver.

    Report from Ben Willis
    Cougar mauls Cherry Hill woman
From a US mailing list, post by Lyn Culver, April 2002
A Cherry Hill woman, Christine Lee, 36, remains in Mena Medical Center in stable condition after being bitten on the upper and lower arm by a newly-purchased adult cougar on Monday night.
According to her husband, Robert, Lee entered the cage while the cougar was feeding and it attacked her. "She got in there with him and she got bit twice on the arm, "said Mr. Lee. "We purchased the cat Sunday from a man in Horatio, who had three or four big cats. This one was originally a wild one but was hurt and nursed back to health, then kept in captivity for about five years.
"My sister had one and I had been around them before," he continued. "My wife saw the ones in Horatio and wanted one so I bought it. It got away the first night we got it home (Sunday) but didn't go far and we tranquilized it and brought it back to the cage. The next night it got a hold of my wife when she went in the cage."
Arkansas Game and Fish Officer Phillip Abernathy said a 911 call came in about 6:25 Monday night. "The First Responders and the Ambulance crew were there when I arrived, and they were caring for the woman in the ambulance," said Abernathy. "We believe a combination of alcohol and inexperience played a significant role in this incident. I highly recommend that if you intend to keep an animal like this, you get some professional training before bringing it home. I believe this kind of incident is one of the reasons we have big feral cats in Arkansas. People buy these creatures and find out that they're not as compatible or as wonderful as they thought, and they end up releasing them into the wild rather than finding appropriate homes for them."

The LIOC-ESCF Non-Domestic Felines Husbandry Course
This course is offered by LIOC-ESCF . The purpose of this course is to familiarize one with the basic principles needed to work with wild or exotic felines species. This course is offered on an irregular basis, usually about 2 times a year. (Check the website above for the next scheduled class.) I have heard rave reviews from all my cat-friends that had previously attended this course. The cost of the course was also quite reasonable, typically $75. Since I will soon be volunteering at the zoo next door, and hope someday to own a couple of lions, I decided this course would be a worthwwhile thing to attend. It would also be a good opportunity to meet a lot of the cat-people I know only on the internet. I had waited up to this point for a class to be near where I am, so I can avoid the expense (And since September 11th., the hassle) of airline travel. The course had been in Seattle in August, but the timing was very poor for me to attend at that time. So, I was very elated to hear it would be offered in early December, 2001 at a place just north of San Fransisco. This is within easy driving distance for me. As an added incentive, this particular course ithis particular course included an extra day where you could get some hands-on with some of the smaller exotic felines! I planned to combine this trip with a visit to San Mateo, CA. A professional colleauge was leaving his job at KCSM TV, and wanted some of us who collect old broadcst equipment to come and help clean out his warehouse. I would then (Hopefully with a fully loaded truck!) drive up to Geyserville, CA, which is 75 miles north of San Fransisco. This is where the exotic feline husbandry course was to be offered, at a place called 'Isis Oasis'.

Cull of the wild Ong Soh Chin
It's no fun being a stray cat in Singapore. Even though evidence linking Sars to cats is still inconclusive, human beings are reacting like, well, animals IN ANCIENT Egypt, the killing of a cat - even if it was accidental - was punishable by death. The ancient Egyptians, who were the first to domesticate cats, regarded felines as sacred. They even worshipped a Cat Goddess called Bast. Fast forward some 4,000 years to modern-day Singapore and it's obvious that grand old pyramid schemes won't cut it here. The AVA says it is stepping up the culling - from 35 cats a day two Fridays ago to 45 now - for public health reasons, as sterilisation has not been effective. It says it is not doing this because of the fear that severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) may be passed from animals - specifically cats - to humans. But cat lovers suspect otherwise, and have been taking it upon themselves to round up strays and sending them to an animal shelter in Johor, Malaysia. Now, I am appalled at the cullings, as I would be at the killing of any other harmless animal.

Feline Species
There are 36 species of wild cats. In early March 1996 the Felid TAG (Taxonomic Advisory Group) had a conference. At this meeting a revised felid taxonomy was officially agreed to. As you may have noticed in the past, many different books gave different taxonomies - for example, the snow leopard being in 'panthera' or 'uncia', all small cats being 'felis' vs many different small cat genera, etc. The new taxonomy agreed to basically divides the former Felis and Panthera groups into 13 and 4 genera respectively, for a total of 18 genera (13 in the Felidae subfamily, 4 in the Pantherinae subfamily, and 1 in the Acinonychinae subfamily). There are still 36 species (the Iriomote cat is officially a subspecies of Leopard cat, and the Canadian, Eurasian, and Iberian Lynxes are officially different species, not subspecies). Most species are further divided into subspecies, based on physical distinction and/or geographic separation. I have only gone into detail about the leopard subspecies, as these groupings are fairly well agreed upon. Most cat species' subspeciation is a topic of debate. Separate pages for some of the species below describes their IUCN (World Conservation Union) Red List status. The Red List takes into account overall world-wide populations, so even if a cat is endangered in one country or state, as a species it may not be listed as endangered. The six categories are: Critically Endangered, Endangered, Vulnerable, Near Threatened, Least Concern, and Data Deficient. (Information taken from the Autumn 1995

The overall public relations effort for CFA goes far beyond issuing news releases, providing show promotional materials, videos, and pamphlets, or taking the CFA booth to pet fairs, cat shows, veterinary and humane association conferences and numerous other venues to spread the word about CFA. Cats! Wild to Mild is sure to be the "cat's meow". Supported by the Friskies PetCare Company, the National Science Foundation, Jaguar Cars North America and the Cat Fanciers' Association, this national traveling exhibition is the most comprehensive show ever launched on the history, biology and evolution of wild and domestic cats. Cats! Wild to Mild traces the history of cats from wild, exotic felines to America's Number One pet. Visitors can "prowl" into the realms of feline science, myth, responsible pet care, endangerment and conservation issues of wild cats. Developed by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the exhibit will tour at least 15 cities across North America over the next five years. "This exhibit uses the visitors' familiarity and love of cats to teach basic science and biology lessons," said Dr. Blaire Van Valkeburgh, guest curator of the Cats! exhibition and professor of vertebrate morphology at the University of California Los Angeles. "The museum also hopes to inspire children and adults to learn about careers in science, while educating exhibit visitors about responsible pet care and the highly endangered status of wild cats."
