Cats stare at us from the walls of Egyptian tombs built thousands of years ago, they hunt in San Diego's backcountry and in the grasslands of Africa, and they sit on our laps and living room couches. These fascinating creatures are the subject of "Cats! Wild to Mild" an interactive exhibition at the Museum from November 15, 1997, through January 4, 1998. Focusing on the biology, behavior, natural history and conservation of both domestic and wild cats, "Cats!" is an in-depth exploration of felines, or more specifically, the scientific Family Felidae. Felines are a study in contrasts, from America's number one pet one out of four households have cats to some of the most feared and revered mammals on earth.

Here is a brief explanation of who we are and our mission.
Between the two of us, Dave and I have over 23 years of direct hands on exotic animal wildlife licenses, we have worked and cared for every thing from an Anteater to a Zebra with a strong preference and specialization for rare felines and endangered lemurs . Dave and I both have an extreme passion for wildlife, education and conservation. Second only to our desire to create large naturalistic habitats for the Sanctuaries residents; is our goal to create an interest in others on the importance of protecting both wild animals and their remaining "wild places". With very similar beginnings, David and I both started off doing studio, movie and TV work under the guidance of more experienced mentors. Through the years, each of us slowly grew tired of these activities, yearning for a better way to expose the public to these remarkable creatures. Looking for a way that directly benefited the animals we cared for while at the same time never having to take them out of their naturalistic habitats and off the Sanctuary grounds, which is often very stressful on the animal. Thus the creation of the

The cats in my household have been in two distinct generations, with a gap of a few years between the lots. The first generation was the more typical, in which lazy, contented cats occasionally went wild. The present generation are wild, wild animals who occasionally are contented.
Pumpkin bids good night. Of course, the first generation had the benefit of Pumpkin, who from the age of six months ruled the household and who was everything one might hope to find in a pet. Every night she would give me a special "good night" by sitting on my chest and staring at me and giving a pet or two on my chin while I stared at her. After several minutes, she was content to go sleep on the foot of the bed. The second generation began one day when Sue decided that the presently catless household should be catified. Instant gratification necessitated going to a pet shop, in which Muffin was found; however, rather than the happy little friend that we hoped for, the kitten Muffin disappeared in the dark recesses of the bedroom and no amount of coaxing could bring her out. While discussing this new problem of how to get the kitten to act like a kitten, Sue and I saw a small, dark shape zoom into sight, smack a small ball that we were trying to lure her with earlier, and then disappear again. The trick to seeing Muffin was to play with her. When playing, Muffin is happy; otherwise, she's the shyest animal in the world.

Suggested Guidelines for
Feral Cat Colony Caretakers
Am I ready for this Responsibility?

They're hungry, they're breeding, they may be ill or injured. This is the scene that many people come upon BEFORE humans intervene in a feral cat "colony". A "colony" is the term used to describe a group of unowned, wild cats. Feeding is the first step in caring for feral cats, but certainly not the ONLY step and not even the most important step!
Before supplying food to feral cats and/or kittens, you should consider the following questions.
  • Are you willing/able to make a long term (lifetime) commitment to these cats?
  • Do you have the financial means to commit to these cats? (Food, spay/neuter, medical attention, if necessary)
  • Is this a safe place for a colony of cats to exist?
  • If you are not the property owner, do you have permission from the property owner to feed/water and maintain the cats on the premises? (Is the property owner aware of this long term commitment?)
  • If you plan on moving in the future, are you prepared to find someone to take over the care of your colony? (Are they aware of this long term commitment?)

Ten Steps to Trapping and Altering Your Feral Cats Thank you for assuming the responsibility to trap and neuter your feral colony. Forgotten Felines has a limited source of manpower and your own efforts will make a critical difference in helping us to control the feral cat population. A neutered colony is a happy colony!
    IMPORTANT NOTES

Please plan what you are going to do with the cat you are trapping BEFORE you trap. Your plan should be one of the following:
  • Trap and take the cat to your veterinarian for neutering, vaccinations, ear tipping and necessary health care. Be sure to tell the vet to use stitches which will dissolve, that the animal is wild, and ask them to tip the ear. Take a pet carrier (large enough to hold the cat laid out) to the vet's office with you. Ask the vet to transfer the cat into the carrier after surgery for recovery. You will transport the cat home in the carrier. The carrier will be more comfortable for the cat if you need to care for the cat between the time it leaves the vet and its release to your property to be cared for, fed and watered daily. Be sure to make appointment and arrangements with your vet BEFORE you trap.

They roam the streets, scavenging through dumpsters and junkyards, slinking into shadows at the sight or sound of humans. They are predominantly undetected, an urban myth to many city dwellers. But feral cats are an all-too-abundant reality for the people working to save them. Feral cats are felines that have had little or no human contact; as a result, they exist in a wild state. Approach them and they'll bolt; pick up one that's injured or sick, and you'll likely sustain severe gashes or bites. They're not "mean" cats, contrary to what some might think; they're simply terrified of humans, much like a squirrel or raccoon. Unlike totally undomesticated animals, however, feral cats often can be socialized with patience and kindness.
There are an estimated 60 to 80 million feral cats in the United States, and the population is growing. Most die before reaching one year of age, and too often, their deaths are tragically slow. Feral cats are at the mercy of extreme heat and cold, disease, lack of water and food, dangerous cars and trucks, coyotes and aggressive dogs, and other potentially lethal forces. But increasingly, people across the United States are mobilizing to help this special group of animals.
"I Didn't Know She Had It In Her"
The explosion of feral cats can be traced to the 1990s, when cats became extremely popular as pets. Unfortunately, too many guardians didn't realize that female kittens can breed when they're as young as five months old. An unspayed kitten will run away to seek out a mate. And when it's time for her to give birth, she'll usually try to find a secluded spot, such as an abandoned house, a drainage pipe, or a car in a junkyard. If her young ones aren't exposed to humans before about three weeks of age, they'll become feral. Luckily, kittens are good candidates for socialization, if rescued early on.

Since 1997 the Great Cat concept has been cast about among a selected group of existing like minded sanctuaries. As working relations developed between existing sites the Great Cat Concept was conceived. Great Cats in Crisis is the solution to the problems facing the great cats caught in the crisis. Great Cats in Crisis, Inc. is an international federation of wildlife preserves that started with American Wildlife Sanctuaries™ working together under a national non-profit corporation ( 501-C-3 Pending ). The group expanded one year after conception to include International Wildlife Sanctuaries™ in both Guam and South Africa. Our main goal is the creation of a closed gated community by establishing multiple satellite sites around the globe. This is possible through the Great Cat Management School. Great Cats equips each of these Living Resorts™ with resources to meet their operational needs.
