Whether you like your cats striped or spotted, sleek or fuzzy, there is a breed for you. Indeed, cat breeding has become a multi-billion dollar business around the world, with breeders constantly competing to create exotic new varieties that might win the blue ribbon at the next pet show. Often, cat breeders will carefully comb wild and domestic breeds looking for just the right combination of characteristics, matching long hair from one breed, for example, with racy stripes from another. But other times, chance plays as big a role as design in the development of a popular breed.
Unusual breeds can cost up to $3,500 or more. The remarkable curve-eared American Curl, for instance, got its start with a stray cat discovered in California in 1981. "On a sunny day in June, a longhair silky black female kitten with unusual ears wandered up to the doorstep of Joe and Grace Ruga," explains one Web site devoted to the cats with the gracefully-arced ears. "Joe [asked] Grace not to feed the kitten. Grace, not abiding by her husband's wishes but listening to her heart instead, left a bowl of food on the porch. The affectionate black kitten quickly worked her way into the Rugas' hearts (especially Joe's) and they named her Shulamith, which means 'black but comely.' Such are the beginnings of the American Curl as it is known today."

Using the LIOC-ESCF, Inc. Model for State Regulations

This document represents over a year of group efforts to research and develop a useful model that can be presented to state legislatures, Game and Fish offices or if slightly modified, even county governments, as a blueprint and guideline to allow private participation in captive husbandry of wild felines. This document addresses the needs of the animal as well as the safety of the public.
    The Problem. . .
The problem many wild cat owners are facing is an ever increasing number of states and counties are enacting laws that forbid private ownership of wild felines. These laws are in response to a number of factors - the increasing popularity of wild cat ownership, intense pressure from organized animal rights groups to eliminate wildlife in captivity and TV and newspaper coverage which spotlight accidents or escapes by these feline species. The negative result of enacting ban laws is displaced felines and the creation of potentially dangerous situations when happy animals in stable situations are forced to be relocated to sanctuaries or new homes. This puts an extreme burden on the innocent animals and the owners who care for them.

No other animal captures the image of strength and majesty like the lion. Thousands of years ago, these powerful felines were found from the Mediterranean to India. Today the "king of beasts" is largely restricted to Africa, south of the Sahara desert, where some live in the woodlands and savannas of protected reserves. Like all cats, the lion is a muscular hunting machine. Unlike the cheetah, the lion is built for strength, not speed. A male lion often weighs between 160 and 180 kilograms (350 to 400 pounds) and is 3 meters (10 feet) long, including the tail. The female lion weighs about 150 kilograms (330 pounds). The shoulder and forelegs are well developed, enabling lions to clutch prey and pull it to the ground. If its prey is small, the lion may bite through the skull or neck with its powerful jaws. Larger animals (like the zebra or wildebeest-the lion's preferred prey) are usually strangled with a throat bite. Of its 30 teeth, the four canine teeth are used to hold and puncture, while the four

Crazy about cats? Well, the most fabulous of the felines have some great advocates who are working at education, and habitat conservation, and they just opened a specialty zoo. Some of the rarest of the rare can be seen at the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven (SECH)in Dunlap, California.
You are probably asking, "Where the heck is Dunlap, California?" It is the same question, Ark Animal's Director Diana Guerrero asked when she first met the team of professionals at the Feline Taxon Advisory Group (TAG) Meeting not too long ago.* After years of planning, the zoo opened to the public for Memorial Weekend 1998.
Since that time, Guerrero attended their official Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and just recently returned from their first fund-raiser. The fund-raiser was put on by Project Survival (PS), the 501(c)3 support arm associated with the SECH. They focus their efforts on projects affecting the fabulous felines and their habitats.
The fundraising event had an Arabian Nights theme and was attended by about 100 of the most intimate friends and supporters of the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven and Project Survival. Cam-Lo the clouded leopard attended the event and as usual, stole the hearts and attention of most of the animal lovers attending. If you would like to help endangered cats or to visit the Sierra Endangered Cat Haven, contact them directly at (559)338-3216.

Not too sure what I can say about cats, this page came mostly from my daughter bugging me about getting kitties up on the net too! ..LOL We have four cats in our family who are indoor creatures.. *but tend to live in the garage during the Christmas season otherwise they chew through the cords on the christmas tree lights*. But anyhow two of our cats are Tonkinese, Koko, our male, however is a seal point Tonk and Yum-Yum, our female is a blue point, which is lighter then a seal point..but darker then the lilac...getting confused yet?...I know I was when I first discovered all the differences in 'points'...hmmmm...what the heck is a point anyway...and what is a Tonkinese?! I'll answer the 'What is a Tonkinese' question first...Tonkinese are basically a cross between Burmese..and Siamese. They are a medium sized cat with a muscular build...and..can come in different color arrangements...*sounds like I'm talking about flowers here..sheesh!* ...but they can take after either side of their heritage...
    • Pointed - a Siamese coat pattern - It has a strong contrast
    • Mink - unique to the Tonkinese - It is a medium contrast between the Siamese and Burmese. The contrast between body and legs is less abrupt than with Siamese.

All carnivores share a propensity for being bossy, competitive, territorial, and overly aggressive. They are also intelligent, enthusiastic and infused with boundless optimism. With their physical strength and high level of self-esteem, they excel as managers, policemen, doctors, lawyers, athletes, scientists, politicians and builders. Carnivores are divided into three main groups: canines, felines, and pinnipeds
    Canines

Of the three groups, the canines are the most family oriented and the least selfish. Valuing friendship and companionship above all else, they are honest and emotionally expressive, albeit somewhat eccentric. The canine family includes domestic dogs, foxes, wolves, wild dogs, and their close relatives the bears . Brave and selfless, they are good looking individuals and almost always in fine physical condition. With an overabundance of energy and an affinity for play, they are earnest and conscientious about their careers. With their exceptionally advanced sex drives, canines are highly tactile and place great importance on the hierarchy of their social structure. Their obsession with the roles of dominance and submission helps to maintain order in their relationships, and although some canines take on the leadership position, most are happy to simply run with the pack. Dog
It's difficult to recognize a dog from its physical characteristics alone since they come in all shapes and sizes. but regardless of their proportions, they are demonstrative, gregarious, and invariably eager to please.

There are more than 500 million domestic cats in the world, with 33 different breeds, which is too many to list. More than 35,000 kittens are born in the US alone each year, which is why it's important to spay or neuter your cat (get it fixed so it can't have kittens.) Did you know that 25 percent of cat owners blow dry their cat after a bath? Brief History
Cats first became pets in Egypt around 4000 BC but they had to work for their livelihood by getting rid of rodents and unwanted waste. When these beloved pets died, owners shaved off their eyebrows and then mummified their cat so it could be buried with them when they died. The goddess of love and fertility in Egypt was a cat named Bastet. During the 15th century, cats weren't considered pets and the Pope considerd all cat lovers to be witches - and they were burned. Black cats are now considered symbols of luck by Europeans. Over time, several wild species became domestic house cats and A Mackarel Tabby Named Spike.

Cats Trivia Page 1 Page 2 French researchers claim that the domestic cat has a vocal range of as many as sixty notes, from a gentle purr to growls of varying intensity to the howl that sometimes annoys the neighbors. The cat’s skeleton is quite close to that of the human, but it’s lack of a shoulder blade allows freedom of movement of the foreleg, which can be turned in almost any direction and a cat also has around 290 bones and 517 separate muscles. Cats are the only four-footed animal, with the exception of camels and giraffes, that walk by moving their front and hind legs first on one side and then the other. Only four cats really roar: lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars. A cat’s teeth, from newborn kitten to the largest lion, are the most awesome weapons in the mammal kingdom They are very sharp, and finely serrated like a knife. The curved, pointed canines are set in the cat’s jaw so that the molars fit together with their sides intact, like a pair of scissors, rather than tooth to tooth, as is the case with humans and most other mammals.
