Felines gone wild: feral cats The face of a killer? By Andrew Adamson , August 30, 1999
Staring down into face of your purring feline, as it lies curled in your lap, it's hard to imagine such a loving kitty-cat of being a bloodthirsty killer. But, like it or not, it is and every time you let your cat outside, you are releasing an animal that's been bred to hunt and kill just about anything smaller than itself. It's only relatively recently that the domesticated cat has been bred solely for its beauty. For thousands of years before that, humans have intentionally bred cats for their skill at killing. The target: mice, rats, birds, snakes and other dangerous or destructive animals. Cats come equipped with the tools of a hunter. "And it's not only birds. It's squirrels, chipmunks and things like that," Pimentel says. "I was talking to a friend last week and his pet cat, in a ten year period, killed 143 squirrels." Pimentel minces few words, summing up the impact of the house cat.

Main Menu Establishing Territory Territorial disputes are at the root of many conflicts between felines, wild or domestic. Altercations between domestics are far more common than confrontations in the wild because of the artificially dense environments of the cities and suburbs where most cats reside. Sexually intact males are involved in the greatest number of disputes, but all cats, wild or domestic, male or female, may become embroiled in conflicts.

http://animal.discovery.com/guides/cats/behavior/marking.html
June 08, 2004 EDT Marking Since direct contact among felines in the wild seldom occurs, they must rely almost entirely on indirect methods of transmitting messages. Through a series of scent and visual markers, cats post their own distinctive "Keep Out" signs or "Welcome" mats to announce their own happy hunting and breeding grounds. Potential trespassers coming across such a marker must retreat or enter at their own risk. Outdoors in rural areas, the suburbs or the urban jungle, domestic cats mark territory in much the same way. All felines, wild or domestic, will mark territory for themselves, no matter how small. The size of the territory is dictated primarily by the availability of food. Where it's scarce, cats must stake out large tracts to satisfy their appetites. Where it's plentiful, a small territory will do. Social factors, however, also play a role in territory size. Sexually intact males will roam territories up to 10 times larger than those of their female counterparts in order to find mates. Even neutered domestic males exhibit some degree of the greater wanderlust demonstrated by males in the wild. More Information Marking Fighting Over Turf Posturing Aggressive Fighting ... Main Menu

Frequently Asked Questions Click on a question... All the animals were abused, mistreated, or unwanted, and come from private individuals, zoos, government confiscations, and other refuge facilities. The great majority of our animals have been born in captivity. Many where purposively breed to supply the exotic pet trade and to have tiny cute cubs for display in animal exhibits. Back to top Why are private people allowed to own exotic felines? exotic felines do NOT make good "pets".
Most of the animals we care for have come from private owners who realized that their tiger, lion, cougar, etc. is NOT a pet. Zoos and refuge facilities usually can not take someone's pet for various reasons and many innocent animals are euthanized (killed) because of someone's greed, ignorance, etc... To most people, Bart the cat may look like just another tabby. But to high school student Jose Ybara and his mother, the mischievous Illinois feline is a hero.
One night a few years ago, just before the break of dawn, Jose lay in his bed suffering from a sudden, life-threatening seizure. Bart, apparently alarmed by Jose's distress, leapt upon the mother's bed in the next room. "She was licking my mom's eyelids, scratching and miaowing, doing anything she could to wake her up," Jose later told reporters. The warning worked: Jose made it to a nearby hospital and his life was saved. And, in a historic first, the Illinois government honoured Bart for her "ingenuity and persistence" in the rescue.
Amazing? Yes. But no more remarkable than the many exceptional cats profiled in the Nature program Extraordinary Cats. From Sooty , the English cat who found his way over 100 miles back home, to Scarlett , who risked her own life to save her five kittens from a burning building, Extraordinary Cats profiles the incredible exploits that even the most complacent fat cat can perform. It also highlights the remarkable bonds that people have forged with these once wild creatures, from convicts who find a second chance by grooming their silky fur to psychologists who try to help cats from driving their owners crazy.
Cats and people have a relationship that goes back a long way. Scholars believe that people first welcomed cats into their homes in North Africa more than 2,500 years ago. The partnership was born out of mutual benefit: people welcomed the cats because they killed the mice and rats that threatened to eat their hoards of grain; the cats, in turn, got shelter and a stable food supply.

Their Fight For Survival Continues Hello, welcome to my wild-life page.Hopefully this page will help make people aware of the alarming population statistics on much of our wildlife today. Alarming Estimated Populations
There are 5 tiger sub-species left.Estimated total population of all 5 sub-species are 5,000-5,183 which includes the ones in any circus. The majority of that,is the bengal tiger.
~Bengal Tigers~ The Bengal Tiger population is now estimated at 3,176 world wide,a lot lower than what was originally esitmated. Also,I might add there is alot of controversy over the estimated populations. Indian biologists dispute these estimates. They believe that they are a lot lower. You must judge for yourself. Poaching is extremely high and it's predicted they will be extinct,by the turn of the century. For more info.on this tiger:

Cat Care Project
We'll be doing more of a dual track this year than last, allowing for those with interest in just one area to focus their attention better. Those who like both realms of the feline world can, of course, participate in both types of activities. The project will be meeting monthly with the "tracks" alternating months. Most meetings will be a field trip as opposed to a sit down meeting, though there will be at least two meetings for each track where things do take place in more of a class environment. Track 1 - Domestic Felines - The pet cat, purveyor of fur covered laps and hours of entertainment. Some are show cats, some just your run of the mill variety, but all deserve our attention. We'll be talking about health and nutrition (a holistic vet visit is planned for this), reproduction vs. population control (a trip to a rescue facility of some sort), grooming and beauty treatments for your cat (a show breeder's facility), plus making them beds and water dishes which feature running water. Carried over from last year is our hope to build cat posts as well, though finding the materials at our budget (free) is proving difficult :) Track 2 - Wild and Exotic Felines - Wild cats live all around us - unless you live in Park La Brea which apparently has no stray kitties to boast of. Perhaps a side project in itself there :) We'll continue our exploration of what some have called the "perfect" design - cats, be they house cat or lion, differ in so few ways, it is amazing they all seem so different. We'll be paying visits to the LA Zoo and the Exotic Feline Breeding Compound, plus adding in the Feline Rescue Facility which should be re-opening in the next few weeks. We will also be discussing ways in which the public can be better educated about the wild cats - how the commonly thought of species such as tiger and lion aren't really endangered, just being in-bred to the point of wiping out certain types while other cats, such as those in South America, are nearly gone yet the mainstream public doesn't even realize they exist.

This is the page of all felines Tiger: Please click here to go to a terriffic site just about tigers! Info; Tigers are the biggest cats in the world. They live in steamy hot jungles as well as icy cold forests. There are five different kinds or subspecies of tiger alive in the world today. These tigers are called Siberian, South China, Indochinese, Bengal, and Sumatran. Their Latin name is Panthera tigris. Tigers are an endangered species; only about 5,000 to 7,400 tigers are left in the wild. Three tiger subspecies, the Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers have become extinct in the past 70 years. The size of a tiger's territory depends on the amount of food available, and usually ranges from about 10 to 30 square miles (26-78 sq. km). Siberian tigers sometimes have really big territories (as large as 120 square miles). Although tigers usually live alone, tiger territories can overlap. A male tiger's territory usually overlaps those of several female tigers. Wild tigers can eat as much as 40 pounds of meat at one time. After eating a lot, they often do not eat again for several days. Over much of the tiger's broad geographic range, wild pig, wild cattle and several species of deer are its major prey. Unlike wild tigers which kill their prey and then gorge, tigers that live in zoos eat a prepared diet of horse meat and vitamins daily. They may eat as much as 10 pounds of meat per day. Leopard: Info: The diet of leopards consists largely of smaller animals, with gazelles and antelope generally being the largest catches, as leopards lack the size to regularly bring down a zebra.
