AVMA Home AVMA Journals Home JAVMA online ... News June 1, 2004 A new threat has emerged in the swamps and forests of southern Florida to challenge the state's endangered panthers. Feline leukemia has been diagnosed in four panthers since November 2002. The infectious, often fatal disease is common to domestic cats but practically nonexistent in large, wild feline species. Two of the diagnoses were made this year alone. Now, state and federal wildlife teams are hunting the elusive predator in its southern Florida habitat, not to eradicate the panther as in days past. Rather, their aim is to erect an ecologic disease barrier against feline leukemia by vaccinating as many panthers as they can locate. For the past three years, Dr. Cunningham has been part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's ongoing efforts to protect the panthers and preserve their habitat. A subspecies of the mountain lion, the Florida panther has been on the U.S. Endangered and Threatened Species List for more than three decades. With a mere 70 to a hundred panthers remaining, the panther is one of the most endangered mammals on earth. Like its cousins in the western United States and parts of Canada, the Florida panther is a large, carnivorous cat with a long, dark-tipped tail and relatively small head. The upper parts of its body vary in color from light brown to tawny, with a dull white underside.

Pros, cons of feral and free-ranging cat management debated
Proponents advocate preparation and education
Dr. Slater, who participates in a TNR program on the Texas A&M campus, gave two presentations on TNR programs July 15 in Nashville. She said the programs can be successfully used to reduce free-ranging and feral cat populations, as long as they are a part of a multifaceted approach. Her presentations were part of a day-long series of sessions on the issue titled, "Free-roaming and feral cats and the public."
She advocated that veterinarians be more proactive in helping their clients build strong relationships with their pets by offering clients advice on selecting appropriate cats as pets, educating pet owners about normal cat behavior, and offering mini-courses on cat training and socialization.
But the key is controlling cat fertility by neutering, she said. Veterinarians can help by working with shelters and TNR programs and by promoting sterilization of clients' cats.
"Veterinarians hold the key in terms of controlling fertility," Dr. Slater said.

International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. The Red List is a compilation of species categorized as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable according to the IUCN Categories of Threat. For the most part, categorizations are made by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) Specialist Group covering the taxa in question. Guidelines for using the Red List criteria have been developed to assist Specialist Groups in assessing the conservation status of fishes. The most recent edition of the Red List, which utilized these criteria, is the 1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals. The WCMC Animals Database holds information on threatened species and others of conservation concern. Part of this database is used to generate The IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals, and this information is available here in interactive format.

Many of you know that I am a cat admirer. My love of the feline mobsters goes back to childhood when our family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, from the Fifeshire town of Dunfermline where I was born.
We inherited a rather undesirable grey, moth-eaten old tomcat with an ear missing. We named him Smudge. This unattractive but still noble creature used us a feeding stop and occasional shelter while about his dubious business. He did not once bring home a lady friend, let alone the product of his ungirded, unguarded even, loins. I remember, as a five or six year old, throwing the protesting animal on to an (unlit) fire which scared the proverbial out of him and attaching a rubber ball with a length of elastic to his poor tail which caused much hilarity in me, but not in the strangely trusting old Smudge. The awful guilt and sadness to follow meant that these dreadfulnesses of brat-child excess were never to repeat in my subsequent relationships with that most independent but people- loving companion, Felis felis, Felis domesticus, Felis vulgaris, or Felis pussycatimus, depending on your level of schoolboy Latin and taxonomic species recognition.

Along the Bay, official cat eradication programs meet opposition from a clandestine cat-lovers' group
By Candice Shih What to do when cats go wild has been the subject of a years-long discussion at NASA Ames and Shoreline Park. Scientists and policy makers say that the feral cats wreak havoc on Mountain View's wildlife, including numerous species that are endangered or threatened, like the burrowing owl.
Unwanted kittens become predatory cats "The cats have been reported to be killing the burrowing owls," said Penelope Delevoryas, the wildlife biologist at Shoreline Park. She said the cats prey on other endangered birds including the California clapper rail and the black rail as well. The cats apparently aren't satisfied with birds. Sandy Olliges, chief of the environmental services office at NASA Ames, said they also eat the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse. "They take food from other wild predators like hawks, skunks, raccoons, and foxes," said Delevoryas.

    THE INDIGENOUS WITHIN
    A Cross Curricular Study
What is their relationship with endangered species? Similar to indigenous people all over the world, Paraguay's first inhabitants relied on their natural surroundings for survival and inspiration.  The lush subtropical eastern region offered an abundance of plant and animal life.  Tools and weapons were made from bone, wood and thorns.  Fish and game sustained them along with maize and mandioca which could be planted.  Ancient sounds of the forest are still preserved in their language, which contains many onomatopoetic words.  Religious beliefs incorporate their reverence for nature.  They are said to have given names to 1,100 species of plants which were used medicinally.  Art work also reflects the importance of the natural world to the indigenous as evidenced in materials used to create and design elements of the products.  Many of the plants and animals that were once prolific are now listed as endangered.  This page contains a list of  links for learning more about endangered species.

Video FEATURES Photos ... OP OneWorld A Feline Disease Threatens California's Kelp Keepers Otterly Kelpless CK: Well, we know that the otter population has a lot of disease. It's not a healthy population and there are a lot of concerns as far as their recovery. The question is, can we do anything about it? I mean, I don't think you can ask people to get rid of their cats. We know the parasite in cats is a major problem in the AIDS population, but people still keep their cats. CD: What about throwing away cat litter instead of flushing it down the toilet. CD: One problem also has got to be pressure because there are so many people in this area now. Especially where things like runoff are concerned. You take out the wetlands, you make concrete channels out of creeks, you pave everything, and a lot more nasty stuff ends up in the ocean. CK: Definitely. Ideally, we'd like to be able to show how the things we put in the water affect otters. We want to look at contaminants like oil, and see if they're linked to changes in the otter immune systems. This might make them more susceptible to disease. CD: It's interesting to see all these surfers out here, and that little group of otters offshore. The water here is so glassy because of the kelp. But don't otters have a lot to do with that kelp?

"I hope that the information here is of some stimulation to any of you who have ever cuddled a new pet kitten or simply admired one of nature's minor miracles. The little guy who shares your home is a tiny step away, genetically speaking, from the wide array of the 36 species of wild cat, big and small.
They all, to a man, are the pussies cat."
    Ian Anderson, January 2001
According to Dr. Jim Sanderson, most people are only aware of the existence of roughly one third of the 37 remaining species of cats on this planet. While millions of dollars in the United States are finally being set aside and spent on much needed conservation and studies of the better known "Big Cats", such as the highly endangered Tiger, what about the lesser known, but equally important medium and small wild cats Dr. Sanderson estimates that currently "less that US $50,000 is spent on small cat research all over the world." This appalling and tragic fact has caught the attention, the spirit and the passion of famous musician and devoted cat lover, Ian Anderson.

KEEPING CAPTIVE / EXOTIC WILDLIFE Introduction People who want to acquire various wildlife species frequently contact MassWildlife for information . Some people already have an animal and may be disappointed or frustrated to learn they cannot lawfully keep it in Massachusetts. To avoid such problems and concerns, the public is encouraged to learn the laws pertaining to the possession of wildlife in Massachusetts before they acquire an animal. A summary of these laws is below. This is only a summary and people should refer to the appropriate Massachusetts General Laws (MGL) and the Code of Massachusetts Regulations (CMR) for details. Background: Massachusetts pet stores are inspected and regulated by the Department of Food and Agriculture but the stores must follow MassWildlife laws regarding the animals that they may sell. Purchasers can reasonably assume that an animal for sale in a Massachusetts pet store may be lawfully sold and possessed. Do not assume that animals for sale in other states, including those states adjoining Massachusetts, are lawful in Massachusetts. Similarly, be wary of animals advertised for sale on the Internet or in newspapers. These animals may be lawful at the point of origin, but not in Massachusetts.

Mary S. Gibbs (GNN) The order of these genes on the sex chromosomes of cats more closely resembles that of humans than of any other mammal studied so far, the team reports in a recent issue of Genome Research . Genes on X chromosomes of cats and people are lined up in the same way. This long-term chromosome stability is rare, showing no evidence of evolutionary rearrangements, says O'Brien. "It's like there was some master template that maintained the order of these genes on the X chromosome from the distant ancestors of these two mammalian orders." Most X chromosomes are home to a variety of genes, including what Murphy calls "essential housekeeping genes," genes involved in basic cellular functions such as metabolism. This is why all mammals have the same genes on X chromosomes, but in various arrangements. Studies have shown that the same genes in mice, cows, goats and rats are arranged in different sequences. About half of the current X chromosome is like a fossil, having remained the same through the evolution of all mammals, even the relatively primitive marsupials. Genes on the remainder of the X in placental mammals, on the other hand, were more recently acquired from other chromosomes. Some researchers suggest that some genes cycled from regular chromosomes to the X chromosome and then to the Y chromosome. Once on the Y, they acquired a male-specific function or were lost.
