Federated States of Micronesia Overview The Federated States of Micronesia (formerly part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands) comprise 705 sq km, made up of 607 scattered islands (mostly atolls but also mountainous islands of volcanic origin) of the Central Pacific with an EEZ of 2,978,000 sq. km. The islands are geographically part of the Carolines. The major islands of the FSM, now the member states, are Kosrae, Yap, Pohnpei and Chuuk. Population is about 112,000 and the federal capital is on the island of Pohnpei. Languages are English and Micronesian. Currency is the $US. Briefly, the economy comprises fishing, agriculture and forestry, with copra, bananas and fish making up most exports. Imports are comprised mostly of manufactured goods and foodstuffs. The GNP was $US213 million, or $US1962 per head, in 1996. Government Under the Compact of Free Association which was ratified with the US in 1986, the US retains responsibility for defence and is committed to providing regular economic assistance. The FSM is headed by a President, supported by a 14 member National Congress. The Congress elects the President, who in turn selects members to serve in the Cabinet. Each of the four constituent states also has its own legislature and governor. The national Constitution defines federal responsibilities, such as immigration, taxes and tariffs, currency regulation, banking, navigation, shipping and development of national resources.
