And even as we move to the end of the twentieth century, the age of colonialism is not over in the Pacific In 1990, the United Nations commenced the Decade for the Eradication of Colonialism - but today, there are still outliers of empire in the Pacific region. Occupying a very small total land mass, it is scattered over an ocean expanse five times the size of France. OVERVIEW FACTS LEADERS MEDIA Though formally independent, in 1986 Micronesia signed a "Compact of Free Association" with the United States. Under this, Washington assumed responsibility for defence until 2001, including the right to establish military bases and deny other nations access to Micronesia. In return, Micronesia received financial assistance averaging $100m per year, and the right of Micronesians to live and work in the US.Micronesia also takes its cue from Washington on foreign policy. A renegotiated 20-year compact, worth $1.8 billion over 20 years, was presented to Washington decision-makers in 2003. Despite its small population and the large amount of incoming aid from the US, Japan and elsewhere, Micronesia suffers from relatively high unemployment, a matter compounded by increasing numbers of Filipino migrant workers.

Some of these island groups have been inhabited for more than 4,000 years. Yap, first settled in 1,000 BC by arrivals from South-East Asia. It was the home-base of an empire that spread through the region. The Yapese developed a form of money which consisted of large round stones carved from the rock islands of Palau and transported over the sea by canoe. Pohnpei is the site of Nan Madol, an ancient ruin of a fortified city built on 50 manmade islands and covering 11 square miles. The city was built between 500 AD and 1500 AD by the Saudeleur (Chau-te-leur) kings. It was destroyed after they were defeated in 1628 by the warrior Idzikolkol. The city seems to have been of great religious significance. A similar site is found on Kosrae at Lelu. The population of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is 125,377 (1996) .

News Hu Jintao Holds Talks with the President of the Federated States of Micronesia On the afternoon of March 23rd, 2004, Chinese President Hu Jintao met in the Great Hall of the People with visiting President Joseph Urusemal of the Federated States of Micronesia. Hu Jintao said bilateral relations had been developing very smoothly ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Micronesia 15 years ago. With frequent exchanges of top-level visits, the two sides had enhanced their mutual understanding and friendship.
