YAP FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA
Part of the Federated States of Micronesia, Yap is situated in the Western Caroline, between Guam and Palau. It is off the main tourist route and is made up of four main islands - Yap Proper, Tamil - Gagil, Maap and Rumung, plus ten small islands all within the boundaries of a beautiful coral reef. Click here for a space shuttle photograph of Yap The landscape consists of rolling hills and lowlands covered with thick jungle like vegetation. Most of the coastal areas are mangroves with occasional coral beaches. Like other FSM islands, there is a coral reef, so snorkelling is popular as is diving in the crystal clear lagoon with the giant manta rays which appear at certain times of the year. The town of Colonia on Yap Proper is the capital and is slightly more urbanized than the village area. Yap also has 130 outer islands stretching nearly 600 miles east of Yap Island. Most of the other islands are coral atolls and are sparsely populated by a people different from the Yapese in culture and language. Four indigenous languages are spoken. These are Yapese, Ulithian, Woleaian and Satawalese . English is the official language so some local Government organizations still conduct business in the Yapese language. Because of its position, Yap was minimally affected when the Spanish colonized Micronesia in the 1500s and again during German occupation from the end of the 1800s to the beginning of World War I.

General Characteristics The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is a chain of 607 small islands in the Western Pacific about 2,500 miles west of Hawaii. FSM’s total land area amounts to only 270.8 square miles scattered over more than one million square miles of the Pacific, extending 1,700 miles from the east (Kosrae) to the west (Yap). The 130 square mile Island of Pohnpei is the largest in the FSM and home of the country’s capital and civic center. FSM emerged as a nation from the former United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) administered by the United States from the end of World War II until its dissolution in 1994 when its last member, Palau, became an independent nation. Palau, which lies west of FSM, completes the Caroline Island chain. FSM is a heterogeneous mix of peoples with different customs and traditions united by common cultural and economic bonds that are centuries old. There are at least 8 major indigenous languages and none is spoken throughout the nation. Instead, every state has a language of its own and the common language of commerce and government is English. Many people are familiar with Japanese because of 3 decades of Japanese rule before World War II. FSM’s currency is the US dollar. As in most developing economies in the Pacific, population is growing rapidly, averaging 3 percent annually since the 1950s. However, with easy emigration to the United States, about 2 percent of the FSM population leaves the country for the United States annually, reducing the effective population growth rate to one percent.

But over the past three decades, Pohnpei’s native forest has been dramatically reduced from 42 percent to 15 percent of the island’s area. Lamotrek Island, which averages no more than three to four feet above sea level, has a total population of around 350 people. The population is reduced to around 300 persons nine months out of the year when students leave to go Woleai Atoll, located about 300 miles to the West, to attend the nearest outer island high school, and others travel to attend the high school on Ulithi Atoll, some 300 miles further. A number of individuals regularly travel on the inter-island service ship to Yap, another 100 miles from Ulithi, to seek health care, employment, modern attractions such as television, alternate lifestyles, and consumer goods. Return ship service to Lamotrek is irregular and uncertain, averaging about four to six contacts in the course of a year. The main exports are dried coconut meat, traditional woven textiles and coconut fiber sennit.

Along with the rest of the islands in Micronesia, Lamotrek islanders began being influenced by Europeans after 1521, the year Ferdinand Magellan landed on Guam. This discovery, the first in

We are not as well known, which means not so many visitors! I imagine yourself enjoying our pristine reefs, untouched jungles and our unbelievably clear waterways that stretch through the many enormous mangrove trees. Not enough reasons to come to Kosrae? REPORTS OF STATES PARTIES MICRONESIA
[16 April 1996] I. PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY 1. The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), along with the Republic of Palau, forms the Caroline Islands archipelago. One of the newly emerged Pacific island nations, FSM extends from the equator to 14 degrees north encompassing over 1 million square miles of ocean and a relatively small land area. Comprising the FSM are 607 high volcanic and low coral islands (atolls) only 65 of which are inhabited. The total land area is 270.8 square miles with an additional 2,776 square miles of lagoon areas. The four states of the FSM are, from east to west, the States of Kosrae, Pohnpei (formerly Ponape, renamed in November 1984), Chuuk (formerly Truk, renamed in January 1990) and Yap. 2. Kosrae is the easternmost State of the FSM. Kosrae is 5 degrees north of the equator and about 350 miles east-south-east of Pohnpei. It is a high volcanic island having 42 square miles of land, and it consists primarily of rugged mountainous slopes with only a very narrow coastal plain. Approximately 65 per cent of the island is in forest, 23 per cent in agroforest, 11 per cent in secondary vegetation with the remaining 3 per cent non-forest. 3. Pohnpei is a high volcanic island located 7 degrees north latitude and 158 degrees east longitude. Roughly circular and fringed by relatively dense mangrove forest, the distance across the island is approximately 15 miles. Rugged mountain ridges and deep valleys characterize the interior of the island. The highest elevation on the island is about 2,500 feet above sea level. Approximately 60 per cent of the island is steeply sloped and mountainous. Surrounding the main island is a large lagoon with a total surface area of 70 square miles. Associated with Pohnpei State are eight low coral islands, Mwoakiloa, Nukuoro, Pingelap, Sapwuahfik, Oroluk, Kapingamarangi, Pakin and Ant.

Introduction Located 2,300 miles (3,680km) north of Australia and 2,500 miles ( 4,000km) west of Hawaii, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is made up of four distinct cultural islandsYap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosraethat lie south of Guam in the Caroline Islands. In July of 1978, following a Constitutional Convention, the people of four of the former Districts of the Trust Territory, Truk (now Chuuk), Yap, Ponape (now Pohnpei) and Kusaie (now Kosrae) voted in a referendum to form a Federation under the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia. On May 10, 1979, the FSM Constitution was implemented. The former Districts became States of the Federation and adopted their own State constitutions. The United States administered the region as a Trust Territory until 1986. FSM, now independent and self-governing, became a member of the United Nations in 1991. Most visitors begin their FSM holiday or business trip on the island of Pohnpei. This is primarily because it is the island group's port of entry, serving both Air Nauru and Continental Micronesia aircraft and as the nation's capital and business center. In addition, Pohnpei boasts the FSM's most advanced infrastructure, particularly of hotels, restaurants, roads, and port activity. Pohnpei also has a large selection of excellent resorts; Kosrae, too, offers some fine accommodation choices.
