The island's traditional culture, dating back more than 2,000 years, is intimately connected with stewardship of the land and sea. Through the ages, Pohnpeians have honored the sharp distinction between nanwel , spirit-inhabited inland forests that are essentially off-limits to human use, and nansapw , land converted to human use with the sanction of traditional authority. However, as the outside world has influenced the island state, traditional authority restricting the use of forests has weakened considerably. Fortunately, the Salapwuk Valley, revered as the "home of the first Pohnpeians," appears to be a unique exception. A 3,200-acre volcanic bowl near the island's center, the Salapwuk Valley is the largest intact lowland tropical forest in the north Pacific outside of Hawaii. The entire valley is covered by unbroken native forests, including broadleaf and palm forests in the lower areas, and cloud forest at higher altitudes. Nearly all of Pohnpei's some 120 endemic plant, bird and fish species make it their home.
