he people of the FSM are culturally and linguistically Micronesian, with a small number of Polynesians living primarily on Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi atolls of Pohnpei State. The influence of European and Japanese contacts is also seen. It can be said that each of the four States exhibits its own distinct culture and tradition, but there are also common cultural and economic bonds that are centuries old. For example, cultural similarities are evidenced in the importance of the traditional extended family and clan systems found on each island. Although united as a country, the people are actually a heterogeneous mixture with different customs and traditions bound together by recent history and common aspirations. The cultural diversity is typified by the existence of eight major indigenous languages, and its peoples continue to maintain strong traditions, folklore and legends. The four states of the FSM are separated by large expanses of water. Prior to Western contact, this isolation led to the development of unique traditions, customs and language on each of the islands.

Federated States of Micronesia
Culture
Micronesian societies are made up of clan groupings, with descent traced through the mother (except on Yap, where descent is patrilineal). The head clan on each island can trace its lineage back to the island's original settlers. Clan groupings extend across islands, and Micronesians usually pop in to visit other clan members when they're in the neighbourhood. Extended families are the norm, and most households include grandparents, cousins, children and adopted hangers-on. If one member of the household gets a good job, there's a fair chance the family will extend even further. Traditional dancing is important throughout Micronesia but is especially highly valued on Yap, the island most reluctant to adopt Western ways. The shuffling and the shaking is done in groups, with men and women dancing separately, and is often accompanied by unison chanting. Although most dancing takes place at private village events on Pohnpei, there are occasional performances for tourists. Western architecture has made substantial inroads, but you can still see a few examples of local building in Micronesia. Traditional community structures were constructed from planks of native mahogany with roofs of thatched nipa palm. Micronesia also has a strong tradition of canoe building. Some of the world's greatest early navigators came from the islands, using canoes much like the ones made today. The canoes have a single outrigger, and are generally made from a hollowed breadfruit tree. Larger ocean-going vessels are made of planks bound together with coconut husk fibres - some of these canoes are 100ft (30m) long.

Federated States of Micronesia There's something to be said for a country that tries to outlaw ties and baseball caps. Despite being firmly tied to the USA's economic and political apron strings, the Federated States of Micronesia are doggedly hanging onto their traditional ways. The Micronesians are proud of their past, especially since they were navigating the Pacific before Columbus was a glint in Queen Isabella's eye. The laid-back islands have some of the world's best wreck diving, and are considered an untouristed haven for beach bunnies and scuba groovers. Attractions
Chuuk
Chuuk (formerly Truk) is colourful, lively and rough around the edges. It comprises 15 main islands, 92 outer islands and over 80 islets in the Chuuk Lagoon. Its biggest drawing cards are its sunken wrecks, and its most enthusiastic visitors are divers. A whole Japanese fleet rests on the lagoon floor, evidence of the largest naval loss in history. Each wreck is a time capsule - some are upright, some intact, some in pieces. The holds are full of guns and trucks and fighter planes, the dining areas are littered with dishes, silverware and sake bottles, and the skeletal remains of the perished crews lie 'buried' at sea. Back on dry land, Chuuk's houses are commonly painted in several bright contrasting tones and village life proceeds among them at a leisurely pace. On hot days village women sit in streams doing laundry and young children run around naked. You might find that sitting on Weno, the main island, and watching the sun set behind the Faichuk Islands in the western lagoon, is as energetic as you want things to get. Most accommodation options are on Weno, but there are lodge-style places on other islands. Weno is connected with Pohnpei and Guam on the island-hopper air-routes.
Kosrae
Kosrae is one of the least spoiled and least developed areas in the Federated States, a laid-back place that retains an air of innocence. The main island measures 109 sq km (42 sq miles) and is volcanic with an interior of uncharted rainforests, a pristine fringing reef and a coast that is a mix of sandy beaches and mangrove swamps. The people are casual and unpretentious and, given that it's unusual to have more than about a dozen visitors at a time on the island, the residents still take a friendly interest when someone new is in town.

Aquaculture has recently begun on a small scale, and included milkfish farming, black pearl farming, giant clams, trochus and sponges for export, and aquarium fish. Each of these business areas is seeking additional investment for expansion, especially with investors who have marketing capabilities in major export markets. To learn more about specific opportunities, see the state sites or e-mail the state investment promotion contacts.

13. Federated States Of Micronesia
Known as the federated states of micronesia, each speaks its own language with its own distinctive culture, traditions and history.
http://www.janeresture.com/fedmic/main.htm
FEDERATED STATES OF MICRONESIA Kosrae, Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap are four island states of more than 600 tiny islands and atolls, stretching almost the entire width of Micronesia, 1,800 miles across the Pacific from east to west. Known as the Federated States of Micronesia, each speaks its own language with its own distinctive culture, traditions and history. None of the bright lights of Guam and Saipan are to be found here. A more traditional island lifestyle prevails, surrounded by the spectacular beauty of the islands and their seas. An integral part of Continental Micronesia's 'Island Hopper' route across Micronesia, the Federated States of Micronesia attracts the more adventurous traveller, such as experienced sports divers, underwater photographers, hikers and backpackers. Both Kosrae and Pohnpei are situated far to the east of the group and share a similar climate and geography. They are high volcanic islands with cloud shrouded peaks, lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and hidden mountain pools. They share the same pristine, fringing coral reefs, clear azure seas, mangroves and sandy beaches. The Lelu ruins reached its peak in the 12th century. Nan Madol, however, began construction as early as 500 AD and was toppled by the present day traditional government in the 1520s. Chuuk is renowned for its dramatic wreck diving, which is recognized as the best of its kind in the world. Its vast lagoon, more than 30 miles across, was Japan's 'Pearl Harbour' and more than 100 ships and aircraft were sunk while sheltering here during World War II. The warm, tropical water, prolific marine life and ocean currents have transformed these wrecks into breathtakingly beautiful coral gardens and artificial reefs, home to hundreds of marine animals and fish.

In 1525, Portuguese navigators in search of the Spice Islands (Indonesia) came upon Yap and Ulithi. Spanish expeditions later made the first European contact with the rest of the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Caroline Islands until 1899. At that time, Spain withdrew from its Pacific insular areas and sold all of them to Germany, except for Guam which became a U.S. insular area. In 1914, German administration ended when Japanese naval squadrons took military possession of the Marshall, Caroline and Northern Mariana Islands. Japan began its formal administration by a League of Nations mandate in 1920. Sugar cane, mining, fishing and tropical agriculture became the major industries. The United Nations created the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (TTPI) in 1947. The Kosrae, Ponape (now Pohnpei), Truk (now Chuuk), Yap [these four districts comprise the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM)], Palau, Marshall Islands, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands all constituted the TTPI. The TTPI came under DOI responsibility in 1951. The President of the United States appointed a High Commissioner to administer the Trust Territory. Until 1979, the High Commissioner appointed a district administrator for each of the FSM states to oversee their programs.

    Yapese Culture
Yap is located in the Western Carolines, about Midway between Guam and Palau. Yap is one volcanic complex made up of four islands plus eleven inhabited outer islands and atolls. The total land area of Yap State is 46 sq. miles. The first round of negotiations between Congress of Micronesia and the U.S. were held in 1969 to discuss the future political status of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which later became the Federated States of Micronesia. The Compact of Free Association between the U.S. and the Federated States of Micronesia was signed in 1986. This contract outlined the security and economic agreements. In 1991, Micronesia was admitted as a member of the United Nations General Assembly. There are four traditional, distinct languages in Yap: Yapese, Ulitian, Woleaian, and Satawalese. Yapese is the language spoken on Yap proper. The other languages are spoken in the outer islands. Words in Japanese, Spanish, German, and English are also woven into the language. Generally, Yapese youths speak English as their second language. Most elders speak Japanese as their second language. English is the official language of the Federated States of Micronesia. Many Yapese still wear traditional attire of loincloths or "thus" for the men and "grass skirts" or lava lavas for the women. "Thus" are generally made of red, white, or blue cloth. The grass skirts worn by Yapese women are not made of grass but of shredded leaves of ti, banana, betelnut, fragrant ginger, fern, and other leaves. Today, the western culture has influenced the Yap dress code and many Yapese are seen wearing shorts and t-shirts with name brand logos such as Nike. The more traditional ways of dressing are reserved for dance.
