Announcements and Press Releases Maine Credit Union Movement Provides Kids With Holiday Shopping Tips and an Economic Lesson Tuesday, December 16, 2003
(Westbrook) - Holiday shopping can be a lot of fun for kids and a great financial education lesson as well. That is the message from the Maine Credit Union League this holiday season. In cooperation with the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), the league is providing a list of holiday shopping tips for kids so they can enjoy the holidays and learn how to become financially savvy. "It is never too early for kids to start good saving and spending habits, and what better time for children to begin the process of learning financial responsibility then during the holidays," reflected John Murphy, President of the Maine Credit Union League. "One great way for children to start is by opening a Christmas or Holiday Club account offered at credit unions throughout the State. Children will be purchasing gifts for their families this holiday season and having them directly involved in the process, such as preparing a budget, the benefits of savings and gaining an understanding of what things cost, will teach kids an invaluable lesson." Working with the Maine Council on Economic Education, Maine's credit unions have a leading role in youth financial literacy efforts in the State. Maine's credit unions and CUNA suggest the following ideas for kids regarding holiday gift spending:

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE DEPENDENTS SCHOOLS (Agency) and OVERSEAS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (Union) 0-AR-2514 DECISION March 31, 1994 Before Chairman McKee and Members Talkin and Armendariz. I. Statement of the Case This matter is before the Authority on exceptions to an award of Arbitrator Richard I. Bloch filed by the Agency under section 7122(a) of the Federal Service Labor-Management Relations Statute (the Statute) and part 2425 of the Authority's Rules and Regulations. The Union filed an opposition to the Agency's exceptions. The Arbitrator ordered the grievant, an overseas teacher, to be compensated for one day at her daily rate and one day of premium pay for her activities at the registration day of a conference, which day was scheduled on October 14, 1991, a Federal holiday. We will modify the award to vacate the award of premium pay. II. Background and Arbitrator's Award In September 1991, the Agency notified its teachers of learning-impaired students of an in-service training conference to be held on Monday, October 14 through Thursday, October 17, 1991. The grievant, a teacher of learning-impaired students, attended the conference. She arrived at the conference on Monday, October 14. Because October 14 was Columbus Day, a Federal holiday, and there was no school scheduled, she was not compensated for the day.

TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT
by Robert M. Hunter, Registered Patent Agent
This document web explains a variety of technology management activities. They include controlling access to invention data, supervision of invention evaluation and disclosure activities, milestone tracking and reporting. Access Control
Intellectual property is most valuable when its owner can control its use. Special care must to taken to control access to patentable intellectual property before a patent application is filed and during the prosecution of the application (i.e., before a patent issues on the application). In addition to legal advantages, commercial advantages can be gained by controlling access to information about new inventions. In general, reasonable measures should be taken to treat such information as a "trade secret" until its release to the public is appropriate. Two types of security should be considered in controlling access to such information: physical security and software security.
Physical Security . Physical security involves controlling access to the physical elements of a technology management system. While a complete discussion of physical security measures is beyond the scope of this document, the following measures are considered appropriate:

Dr. King launched his career as a civil rights leader in 1955 over the "Rosa Parks" incident. His activism and protests were joined by other African-American community leaders. Dr. King became the most well known civil rights leader, gaining popularity through his speeches, protests and rallies. Dr. King was careful to promote nonviolent action. This enabled the civil rights movement to gain momentum. His activism continued and in 1964, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1965, Dr. King led the historic march from Selma to Montgomery, Al a. State troopers , in an attempt to disband the march, killed two people and injured more than 70.

Educating the Heart: Cesar E. Chavez and Service-Learning
A Forum Brief - January 16, 2004
"The end of all education should surely be service to others." Cesar E. Chavez Cesar E. Chavez's values, through his experience in civil rights, labor leadership, crusade for nonviolent social and environmental change and consumer advocacy, provide a platform for localized service-learning programs which promote civic engagement, greater knowledge of democracy, and community involvement among youth. The Cesar E. Chavez Foundation , based in California, has coordinated K-12 service-learning projects under the name Cesar E. Chavez Service-Learning. The foundation has had an ongoing relationship with the California State Department of Education and has coordinated service-learning activities in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, and Texas. "The Cesar E. Chavez Service-Learning Initiative," said Julie Chavez Rodriguez , the foundation's community program officer and one of Chavez's grand daughters, "is taking Cesar's legacy to the next generation in a direct and meaningful way to develop both active citizens and life-long learners." Ms. Chavez Rodriguez and colleagues described the initiative to policymakers through a Capitol Hill forum sponsored by the American Youth Policy Forum. www.cesarechavezfoundation.org

FREEDOM IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS:
Some Laws You Need to Know About

How much can Muslim parents and students ask public schools to accommodate? Below are some things which can clarify the issue:
1. THE CLINTON DIRECTIVE
U.S. President Bill Clinton instructed Education Secretary Richard Riley to provide every school district in the United States with a statement of principles in 1995.
This statement discusses how far religious expression and activity are allowed in public schools. Some of the important aspects of this statement of concern and interest to Muslim students and their parents are: a. STUDENT PRAYER b. RELIGIOUS DISCUSSION c. RULES FOR SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS AND TEACHERS School administrators and teachers, when acting in those capacities, are not allowed soliciting or encouraging religious activity and are prohibited from participating in this kind of activity with students. They are also not allowed to discourage an activity because it is religious, nor can they solicit or encourage anti-religious activity. d. TEACHING ABOUT RELIGION

When I first got my old HP Deskjet 560 I created a Marathon graphic for it using the tools for it that I had at the time, namely the paint program from ClarisWorks 2.1. I framed the graphic and hung it on my wall. Cut to 7 years later where I have just gotten an Epson CX6400 3-in-1 printer/scanner that prints with near photographic results. Time to upgrade my Marathon graphic! See for yourself the amazing stupidity I show in everyday life and inanely share with you, the Internet public. Dakota Comment
Published October 13, 2002 Dakota Comment is a regular feature on Sunday's opinion pages. The Argus Leader has a diverse panel of 20 people statewide who have agreed to share their comments on important issues of the day. Today's Question: What should Congress or our state Legislature do to ensure fair and accurate elections, as well as making voter registration and voting easier? Federal legislation expected to be enacted ... goes a long way toward addressing these election issues. Voter registration will be easier, up-dated (and working) voting equipment will be ensured, voters will have a way to change the way they marked their ballot before it is finally cast and handicapped access to voting places will be required. All of these measure should achieve fairer and more accurate elections as well as making voting easier. However, they do little to address the greater concern in American elections: low voter turnout. Beth Kelsey, 55, Ree Heights, licensed professional counselor-mental health, Ree Heights

hof - Do any of you use Saxon Math out there?
knight - yes, the high school does use saxon, we use the predecessor, Scott Foresman.
knight - it is supposed to follow the transition from basic math skills to pre-algebra hof - The reason I asked: we switched to Saxon this year: 2-8th grade. It is becoming harder because of the way it is handled. But I still like it. knight - the scott foresman book is really bad. I mean totally worthless. knight - bad examples, the problems are even worse, the only redeeming feature is that there is only 5 to 10 problems with each topic. Kathy/5/IA - I think I use to use Scott Foresman - I don't teach math right now. knight - I am stuck in a "bubble" room right now, have to teach my kids all subjects while the rest of the 6th grade, INCLUDING THE REAL BUBBLE TEACHER, gets to departmentalize
