21. Questions To Ponder As Columbus Day Nears My Two Beads Worth

A message from the United Confederation of Taino People (UCTP): Subject: Questions To Ponder As Columbus Day nears... WHY DO WE CELEBRATE COLUMBUS DAY? What is the meaning of this day to each of us, or is there any meaning at all? Please, bring this up as a topic of discussion with others, and let me know what kind of responses you hear. Questions To Ponder As Columbus Day nears 1. Columbus sailed into the Caribbean and never even set foot in what is now known as the United States. So, why do we, in the United States, give him one of our 8 Federal holidays? 2. Why would Columbus be given credit for "discovering" the Americas anyway, when we all know those lands were already inhabited and had been for thousands of years? Didn't the inhabitants of those lands discover them? Look at any map of the US and see the many, many, many states, cities and towns that all bear the Native American names of people and peoples who once populated those regions: Illinois, Oklahoma, Cheyene, Nantuckett, Milwaukee, Yuma, Omaha, Witchita, Tallahassee, Mississippi, Muskogee, Tennessee, Allegheny, Missouri, Kentucky, Huron, Tuscalloosa and on and on and on...... 3. Knowing that Native Americans were already here, and Columbus never was here, why does anyone go along with the myth that "Columbus Discovered America", when we all know it is not true?

Do you sell SnoPark passes?

No, we do not sell SnoPark passes. Where can I get a SnoPark Pass?
At the Ranger Stations in North Bend or Cle Elum. At the Forest Service Information Center at Summit West (call first to make sure they are available). You can also get them at many sporting goods stores. (Be aware government offices are closed on federal holidays. On weekends and some holidays there is a state park ranger at the John Wayne Trail who will sell you a SnoPark pass. Where can I go sledding at the Pass?
Our tubing center has lift-serve sledding and rentals (click here for the Tubing page) . If you are looking for free sledding, you can go sledding at the John Wayne Trail SnoPark (SnoPark pass required). What's your policy for pets?
We love them, but they are not allowed on the trial system or in the area around the lodge. If you want to ski or snowshoe with your dog there is the nearby Gold Creek SnoPark. You can rent here and ski or snowshoe there. Dogs on SnoPark trails must be on leash. Page Links: Top SnoPark/Sledding/Pets Trails/Huts Lifts ... Lessons

Citizen Action/ Anti-Porn Efforts Legislative, Judicial The Harm of Pornography Teachers in Focus Issue Archive How to Teach About Religious Holidays by Eric Buehrer A few years ago, an elementary music teacher in a school near Grand Rapids, Mich., told me a sad story. For years she did not think she could teach her students religious Christmas carols. Instead, she taught them "Jingle Bells" and "Frosty the Snowman." She then learned that the law allowed her to teach the children traditional carols. As she started a lesson on Christmas carols, she explained to the children that they were going to learn some songs about Jesus Christ. Some of her students gasped in disbelief. When she asked them why they were so shocked, they explained that they thought she was swearing. To her surprise, the teacher realized these children didn't even know that Jesus was a real person. They only thought it was a name used for cursing!

We need to teach our children the day s meaning. To keep the number of three day federal holidays the same, Armed Forces day, the third weekend of every May

"Changing the date merely to create three-day weekends has undermined the very meaning of the day. No doubt, this has contributed greatly to the general public's nonchalant observance of Memorial Day." VFW 2002 Memorial Day address
Over the years the meaning of Memorial Day has faded too much from the public consciousness. From a solemn day of mourning, rememberance, and honor to our departed loved ones, it has degenerated into a weekend of Bar B Q's, shopping bargains and beaches where only token nods toward our honored dead is given, if at all. Too many don't know what the day stands for. Memorial Day used to be a sacred day that was reserved for the remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. Businesses closed for the day. Towns held parades honoring the fallen, the parade routes often times ending at a local cemetey, where Memorial Day speeches were then given. People took the time that day to clean and decorate with flowers and flags the graves of those the fell in service to their country. "Let no vandalism of avarice or neglect, no ravages of time testify to the present or to the coming generations that we have forgotten as a people the cost of a free and undivided republic." During the holiday season, there's one thing worse for school board members, school administrators, and school lawyers than finding a lump of coal in their stockings: It's finding a legal complaint. When it comes to public school observance of religious holidays, however, the courts haven't provided a whole lot of legal guidance. For example, only one such case has reached as high as a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1980, the 8th Circuit upheld a South Dakota school board's policy on holiday observances in Florey v. Sioux Falls School District , a decision the U.S. Supreme Court let stand. There are very few other decisions by federal courts and not many state court opinions, either. The good thing about this paucity of case law is that it suggests there haven't been very many lawsuits over how schools handle religious holidays. The downside is that school attorneys are left to make educated guesses about how to advise their clients about what is legally acceptable.

"One can hardly respect a system of education that would leave the student wholly ignorant of the currents of religious thought that move the world society." So said Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson in the 1948 case of Illinois ex rel. McCollum v. Board of Education . And 15 years later, Justice Tom Clark echoed that thought in the high court's majority opinion in School District of Abington v. Schempp (1963). "One's education is not complete," Justice Clark wrote, "without a study of comparative religion or the history of religion and its relationship to the advancement of civilization." But teaching about "the currents of religious thought" or about religion's "relationship to the advancement of civil- ization" is one thing; providing religious instruction is quite another, and that's where some schools have come to grief.

The History of Prayer in Our Public Schools

Religion in Public Schools: A Joint Statement of Current Law
Pro School Prayer Position ... Classroom Activities Religion in Public Schools: A Joint Statement of Current Law The Constitution permits much private religious activity in and about the public schools. Unfortunately, this aspect of constitutional law is not as well known as it should be. Some say that the Supreme Court has declared the public schools "religion-free zones" or that the law is so murky that school officials cannot know what is legally permissible. The former claim is simply wrong. And as to the latter, while there are some difficult issues, much has been settled. It is also unfortunately true that public school officials, due to their busy schedules, may not be as fully aware of this body of law as they could be. As a result, in some school districts some of these rights are not being observed. The organizations whose names appear below span the ideological, religious and political spectrum. They nevertheless share a commitment both to the freedom of religious practice and to the separation of church and state such freedom requires. In that spirit, we offer this statement of consensus on current law as an aid to parents, educators and students.

Smart Holiday Gifts for Kids Surely it's happened to you. You scour the toy stores looking for the latest "must have" toys for your children only to find that, within a day or two, the new toys have broken, run out of batteries, or are missing pieces. According to the California Society of CPAs ( www.calcpa.org ), a far better idea is to give children financial-related gifts. Gifts that teach the importance of sound money management and investing can provide valuable lessons that will serve your children or grandchildren for years to come. Put Stock in Their Stockings
When it comes to teaching a child about investing, there is no better teacher than experience. For a school-age child or teenager, several shares of stock in a company that makes something the child can relate to, such as fast food, movies, or computer software, provide a meaningful gift and a valuable education. Supplement the gift with a lesson on how to follow a stock's performance in the newspaper. As minors, kids cannot purchase or own stocks themselves. You can buy the shares in your name, if you have a brokerage account, or through a custodial account set up under the Uniform Transfers to Minor Act (UTMA) or the California Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (CUGMA). Under the UTMA or CUGMA, the investment is held in an adult's name in custody for the child until the child reaches 18 (21 in some states).

Tzedakah Post-9/11: How Is Our Country Doing?
By Lawrence Bush and Jeffrey Dekro
Since September 11th, the Torah's perennial concern for "orphans and widows" has been given tremendous new meaning by the outpouring of more than $1.5 billion for disaster relief. The 9/11 United Services Group of 13 major charities has distributed an estimated $425 million; the federal government's Victim's Compensation Fund has begun assigning awards based on the lost earning power of the deceased. How might we evaluate these efforts from the perspective of what we at the Shefa Fund call "the Torah of money"? Judaism articulates several concerns about tzedakah that seem pertinent: speedy delivery; protection of recipients' dignity; and care that the donor not become impoverished.
