In 1960, about eighty percent of children in the United States lived with both parents. Today, only about 50 percent of children will spend their entire childhood in an intact family. When families disintegrate, children often end up with intellectual, physical and emotional scars that last a lifetime. Studies show that fatherless children are at a dramatically greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, poor educational performance, teen pregnancy and criminal behavior. That's why it's important to restore the presence of fathers in the home and re-emphasize and celebrate the connection between dads and their kids. Fathers are an integral part of their children's growth from day one. Researchers have linked a father's presence with improved fetal and infant development. When the connection between children and fathers is established soon after birth, fathers are more likely to remain involved in the lives and futures of their children. And when fathers are involved in their children's lives, their children have higher self-esteem, and live healthier, happier lives. Fathers teach girls about affection. Girls learn the difference between affection and sex from their fathers, not their mothers. Fathers are the ones who teach girls what it's like to be held without it being sexual. The father is the one who begins to let girls understand that affection doesn't have to lead to sex.
