Father’s Day Sermon
One day each year is set aside to reflect on the connection between God and our fathers.
Article was added to Faith and Values .com in June 2003.
by The Rev. Kirk Kubicek
The Reverend Kirk Alan Kubicek is the rector of Saint Peter's, Ellicott City, Maryland, a parish in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. He also works as a consultant with the Office of Stewardship, working with parishes and dioceses across the country on issues of mission, conversion, and commitment. Kirk likes to preach directly from the lectionary and the Baptismal Covenant, the focus on how the sacraments shape and inform our life in Christ. Over the past year he has been experimenting with movement and dance combined with story and song to proclaim the word, e.g. dancing the Macarena while singing about the feeding of the 5,000. Sermon: The Unbearable Lightness of Love Morning light pours
from the whitewashed sky
like golden honey,
perfuming the air;
by noon
butterflies electrify the woods;
the scent of fresh-cut hay
drifts everywhere.

By Adam Schupak
He cut down one of his old clubs to teach you the game. He showed you how to grip it. He bought you a shiny new ball, taught you the rules and how to properly carry yourself on the course. To all the fathers who have passed the joy of playing golf from generation to generation we salute you this Fathers Day! Golf is as much a game about the camaraderie, the walk together, as it is about flailing away at that little dimpled ball. For many fathers, it is a lifelong method of coming together, of playing together, of appreciating life together with their children. Some parents are great athletes in their own right. Did you know that Patty Sheehan's father, Bobo, was a college ski coach in Vermont and also coached the U.S. Olympic Ski team or that Louise Suggs's father, John, was a former pitcher with the New York Yankees and Atlanta Crackers. When he retired, he owned and managed a golf course where Louise learned to play. Glenna Collett Vare's skills came to her naturally because her father had been a first-rate athlete. He won the 1899 United States Championship in cycling.

DADDY
Daddy is only but a name until you become one,
Then your whole life lights up through a daughter or a son,
You never knew someone needed you so very much,
Until God put that little hand in little yours, and oh, the magic touch.
Like magic flooding through your heart and soul,
This little elfin child in your heart, your whole life you'll hold,
No matter the age, even until death knocks at your door,
This child will be on your mind, this child you'll e'er adore. Will it cause you grief? Maybe or not, but all the same, When your child needs you, you'll call out his name, In awesome wonder, in joy, in fear you'll always know, That what they do, or where this child goes, your heart will also go. Be it girl or boy, or even both, it matters not, after all its your blood, You'll worry if its a skinned knee or if there's tears to cause a flood. The sweetness of a first step, or the first tryke it tried to ride, Cant you feel the fear if your child falls and your heart aches inside? That's what love is all about, to replenish the earth with its own

Get Rid of Dad? submitted by Ken Board, missionary to Japan, kenboard@network.or.jp The children begged for a hamster, and after the usual fervent vows that they alone would care for it, they got one. They named it Danny. Two months later, when Mom found herself responsible for cleaning and feeding the creature, she located a prospective new home for it. The children took the news of Danny's imminent departure quite well, though one of them remarked, "He's been around here a long timewe'll miss him." "Yes," Mom replied, "But he's too much work for one person, and since I'm that one person, I say he goes." Another child offered, "Well, maybe if he wouldn't eat so much and wouldn't be so messy, we could keep him." But Mom was firm. "It's time to take Danny to his new home now," she insisted. "Go and get his cage." With one voice and in tearful outrage the children shouted, "Danny? We thought you said Daddy!"

the ASCII text version of this sermon Text: Ephesians 6:1-4 There's an old country song that says; "What a you going to do when the well runs dry?" Do you know what the retort is to in this song? "I'm going to set right down & cry" There has been a lot of times in the ministry that I've felt like that. I've thought, "Man, my well is dry. What do I do now, where do I reach? And it is sure easy to set right down & cry. There are so many times in my life in the ministry that I have to reach back to legacy, to heritage. You did not have the privilege of knowing my father. Can't you just see her packing her bags in the bedroom one night, throwing everything & saying, "Lord, I wanted a family not an orphanage, I quit!" Aren't you glad Susana Wesley didn't do that? Of course God had come to her & said, "now stick with it because 2 of these boys are going to turn the world upside down for Jesus Christ" NO! All she knew was that God had called her to be a Godly parent. And she built a legacy. What I would like to talk to you about in the few moments we have is about my being a father who accepts the joyous responsibility of building a legacy.

SUNDAY HOMILIES FOR YEARS A B C By Fr Munachi Ezeogu, cssp Homily for Father's Day Who Needs Fathers These Days? Let us pray for all fathers today that they may be more faithful to their duties in the family. Let us pray God to give them the moral strength and the economic wherewithal they need to become good role models that their children can always look up to. And for all kids who lost their fathers through divorce or death, let us pray that the heavenly Father of us all may show Himself to be their father in such a tangible way so as to fill the vacuum left by the absence of a visible father. DID ANY CHURCH FATHERS TEACH SOLA FIDE?
RESPONSE TO A CHALLENGE
By: Matt1618
I stated in an email to a Protestant that nobody believed in Sola Fide, or Salvation by Faith Alone for 15 centuries. He responded by showing some quotes from various Church Fathers that to him, showed that some indeed believed in Sola Fide in at least some way, even if they did not write as comprehensively on the matter as Calvin or Luther would do in the 16th century. He sent statements from these Church Fathers that he claimed showed they believed in some form of Sola Fide. I did some research on these individual Church Fathers and found that absolutely none of them believed in Sola Fide or anything close to that. Below are the contents of the letter that I was sent, and my response to that letter. I have not cut out any of his letter to me in regards to this issue. I quote directly from the Church Fathers themselves to show what they actually believed in salvation. His letter is in green. My response to him is in black.
***8/02 I have just recently updated this piece. I originally gave all the quotes from the individual books that the Church Fathers have written, but I did not state where these citations and books can be found. Here I give where these books can be found, mostly from the 38 volume Schaff edition of the Church Fathers. In this updated analysis, at the end of this, I also give the links where these quotes can be found via the reference I give. This is to give easier access to people who want to research these quotes. Also, I have directly linked all of the Church Fathers in question to both the quote in question, and the other quotes that I found. This is to provide easier access for those who want to see specific Fathers.***

Proper 18 - Fathers' Day
Text: Luke 15:11-24
"He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. "Father,' the son said, "I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.' But the father called to his servants. "Hurry!' he said. "Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.' And so the feasting began.
Great Dads
Bill Cosby in his book "Fatherhood" tells this story.
"My wife and I had already made a solemn decision about Cosby transportation: we would not allow any of the children to have a driver's license as long as he or she was living with us. Does this sound unreasonable to you? One memorable day, one of these children did drive to town just to see if she could do it while unencumbered by a license. It was a Saturday morning and my wife and I had just finished breakfast. I walked over to the sink to rinse out a glass and there I suddenly saw our car going past the kitchen window. Turning to my wife, I said, "Dear, did

Sports Lifestyles Editorial ... Home April 24, 2004 The end of Father's Day By Blake M. Petit
Managing Editor Women all over the planet are rejoicing now with the news that a group of Japanese scientists have managed to engineer the birth of a baby mouse with two female parents. It is the first time in history a mammal has been born without the presence of a male genetic contributor, unless you count Phil Donahue. Apparently it was a fairly easy procedure. Scientists took some mutant mice, probably obtained from a sewer where they were training for mortal combat with a clan of evil ninjas, and altered the genes of their embryos so that they would “behave like a male.” After the genetically altered embryos finished watching football and scratching themselves, new baby mice were born. Well according to the Associated Press, the experiment somehow shows why a father’s DNA is usually essential to reproduction. The Associated Press does not go into any further detail about why this is true, leaving us to speculate. Did the baby mouse, not having a father, get teased and picked on by the other mice at school and called names? Was there no one to teach it to shave? Was neither of its mothers willing to throw around the old baseball with it? It’s these sorts of lingering questions that really have held the Associated Press back all these years and prevented it from becoming a true source for hard-hitting news like Think About It Central has become while we’re not talking about DVDs or reality television.

The Fathers of the Church spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, defended the Church in apologetic writing and fought the many heresies of the first six centuries of Christianity. These men, also called Apostolic Fathers, gave special witness to the faith, some dying the death of a martyr. Like Jesus who referred to Abraham as a spiritual father (Luke 16: 24) and St. Paul, who referred to himself in the same terms (1 Cor 4: 15), the Fathers were zealous for the word of God. Their writings are a testimony to the faith of the early Church, yet many Christians are unfamiliar with the work of Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp of Smyrna, Justin the Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian of Carthage, Athanasius, Ephraim, Cyril of Jerusalem, Hilary of Poitiers or Gregory the Great to name of few of the early Fathers. Periodically we will provide biographical information and examples of the writing of these great men of faith. This page will focus on the great St. Augustine. St. Augustine of Hippo (about 354-430 A.D.).

by Forrest Church May 18, 2003 Counseling a parishioner recently who was struggling to come to terms with the death of her father, it struck me that my own father had been dead now for almost twenty years. It seemed impossible. A single year can seem so long, especially to anyone who is waiting for it to end, while decades pass in an eye blink. It helps that my father is still with me. To this very day he remains my teacher. He teaches me something new almost every time he visits my dreams or when I stop to wonder what he might do if he found himself in my shoes. One recurring nightmare I had as a child featured him in a starring role. Whether the fear of falling is learned or innate, this nightmare ended with us plummeting together off a mountain cliff toward certain doom in the ocean below. But then, ascending through fog up a mountainside, we began rounding ever-sharper and more perilous hairpin turns. I can remember to this day both the thrill of adventure and the depth of my love as my heedless father, singing at the top of his lungs, would accelerate to keep pace with the danger.

In every age, in every culture, in every country, there have been men, sometimes only a few men, who tried to improve the lives of women. Although, by today's standards, many of them would not be considered to be feminists, they were far ahead of their time and worked to improve the live's of the women around them. Other men were so far ahead of their time that their writings still resonate with their feminist ideals. Carolingan During the Carolingan Renaissance (about 800 A.D.), women were as well educated as men. Although men held all formal power, some wealthy women had considerable influence. For example, often, while the lord of the manor was away at court protecting the family interests, serving the king, or fighting in a war, his wife had complete charge of the manor. She would be expected to report to her husband when he returned, but often that was a mere formality. As was the case for men, poor women had little control over their ghastly lives Medieval In the middle ages, convents were centers of learning for women just as monasteries were centers of learning for men. For centuries, being a nun was the only vocation open to a woman other than being a wife and any woman who wanted an intellectual life was forced to enter religious orders. In lieu of a dowry paid to a bridegroom or an inheritance, a wealthy man might found a convent for his daughter, mother, sister, niece, or godchild to run, just as a wealthy man might set up a son or daughter in business today. Men even freed themselves of troublesome wives by founding convents for them. Again, wealth, rather than sex, could be more of determining factor in the amount of power a woman was given. Often men benefited from this arrangement. If a convent acquired an especially good reputation, the king or other high-placed nobleman might choose to send his daughters there to study, extending the abbess's and her family's influence.
