In 2000, we tracked some 35 newspapers including 20 of the top 25 markets in the US and USA Today. A number of these newspapers took part of that space for father's with a comparison often titled "How Does Dad Stack Up?" With a subtitle "Do dads get short shrift on Father's Day?" Here's a comparison of how moms and dads fare on their days of honor: What we'll spend on Dad: $90 million. On Mom $105 million (+14%) How many cards we'll send: Dad 95 million. Mom: 150 million (I don't think they included spending on cards or both parents are getting pretty cheap cards and nothing else. Home Missing Links Ash Kimes ... Site Index Father's Day third Sunday in June Here's to the generations of fathers who have led our families to this point in time ~ especially those men who emigrated to the United States so very long ago... George Maizland from Scotland Henry Sefton from Ireland Christopher Howell from Germany Stephen Hopkins from England Nicholas Snow from England William Kymes from England William Walton from England When God Made Fathers When the good Lord was creating Father's, he started with a tall frame. A female angel nearby said "What kind of a Father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put the Father up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without stooping" God smiled and said, "Yes but if I make him child size, who would children have to look up to?" And when God made a Father's hands, they were large. The angel shook her head and said, "Large hands can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails, or even remove splinters caused from baseball bats." Again God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets, yet small enough to cup a child's face in them."

Happy Father's Day
Dads are the best! They love us, care for us, encourage us, support us, and help us every day. Grandfathers and uncles are great, too! Celebrate Father's Day with your dad, uncle, or grandfather.
Quality Time with Dear Old Dad
What is "quality" time? It's time spent together talking, sharing, and learning about each other. Lots of girls say they'd like to spend more quality time with their dads, but they don't know what to do. Here are some ways to spend quality time with your dad (or, if not your dad, another important male role model in your life, such as your grandfather, uncle, or teacher.)
Go for a ride.
Why not pump up those tires and go for a long bike ride with your dad? You can get great exercise and watch the world go by as you zip around corners and over hills. Check out maps of local trails and plot your course together before you go. Be sure to take lots of water and remember, to always wear your bicycle helmet.
Read a book to him.
Remember when you were little and your dad used to read you a book before you went to bed? Why not switch roles and read a book to him instead? Turn off the television and read one chapter a night. Try an adventure story, a classic like Old Yeller, or maybe even a mystery that will give you both goosebumps.
Play catch.

For pure exhilaration and drama, there’s nothing quite like sports: It’s the crack of the bat as it connects with the baseball, hurtling it into the bleachers for a home run; the swish of the basketball as it drops into the net for a three-point play at the buzzer; the roar of the crowd as the quarterback delivers a perfect spiral pass for the winning touchdown. Most importantly, sports bring out the best in the human spirit. There is an intensity and a richness inherent in every sporting experience that amplifies our emotions and our connection with the moment and, indeed, with ourselves. This latest collection of Chicken Soup honors all that is good in the world of sports. From major leaguers to little leaguers, from hockey stars to figure skaters, and from horseracing to mushing, the stories in this book highlight the positive and transformative nature of sports. You'll come to see sports as one of our most important and powerful teachers. They can teach us to focus and stay the course, or to develop a new strategy and rededicate ourselves to a goal. They can teach us to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat. They can teach us the importance of teamwork and remind us that we must strive to give our individual all. At their best, sports will build us up and they will wear us down; they will build character and teach us to overcome adversity.

Fathers Day It’s real easy to get children all riled up. When they come to you asking for help and all you’re doing is playing around, they get exasperated with you real quick. This particular scripture has meant a lot to me. But not in the negative sense, more so in the positive sense because this has a whole lot more to do with the positive things of what a father should do than what the negative things are. It tells us to do two things: give our children discipline and instruct them. They are both positive commands. So today, guys, I want to especially give this message for you. Now it doesn’t matter if you have any children at home. You may have grown children. It still applies to you because you will never cease being a father. Your life will continue to be a testimony to your children long after they’ve left home. For those of you that are thinking about starting families or hoping to start families this is a good word for you to begin your fatherhood. I’m glad that I was able to study these scriptures right as my children were being born because they gave me a lot of wisdom, Godly wisdom. It also says, though, to instruct your children. What do you instruct them about? Well, it’s very easy. It’s just one thing. If you can teach your children this one thing, then you’ve got it made. Teach your children to love God. That’s it. Fathers, teach your children to love God.

F ATHERS' D AY H ISTORY

S onora Dodd, of Washington, first had the idea of a "father's day." She thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. S onora wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, who was a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife died while giving birth to their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. A fter Sonora became an adult she realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910. P resident Calvin Coolidge, in 1924, supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Then in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Our Heavenly Father
We have the ultimate example of
fathers in our Heavenly Father.
~He loves us~
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
(John 3:16)
~He is always there~
"... for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
(Heb 13:5) ~He's our comforter~ "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring allthings to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. (John 14:26,27) ~He knows us~ "I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine." (John 10:14) ~He knows our needs~ "Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."

A Dearth of Father's Day Sermons
Rabbi Melanie Aron June 15, 2002 Rabbi Jack Reimer, a prominent American Conservative rabbi, claims that a lot more sermons are written in honor of Mother's Day than Father's Day. One could theorize as to why that might be. Part of it could be the scriptural portions we have to work with. On this Shabbat, one day before Father's Day, we have in our Torah and Haftorah portions, stories about Jewish leaders who despite their other virtues were poor role mode as fathers. Moses was a great leader of the Jewish people, but there is nothing in our tradition that ties him to his two sons in any positive way. His first son was born during his time in Midian and Moses named him, Gershon, "I have been a stranger in a strange land," His second son (who is mentioned only in passing in Exodus 16) was given the name Eleazar meaning "The God of my Father was my help and he delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh." These names reflect more on Moses' experiences than on any characteristic or experience of his sons. They are different from other biblical names, like Isaac, Ishmael or Jacob, which reflect something about the child, his birth, his destiny, his own story and not his father's. Moses took his sons with him when he went down to Egypt, or at least Gerson whose circumcision is recorded in the Torah text. Circumcising your son is one of the obligations of a father, yet it seems that Moses did not fulfill his responsibility and Tzipporah, his Midianite wife, had to step in. Later we are told that Tzipporah and Moses' two sons were not present at the Exodus. Jepthah brings them to Moses in the desert "after she had been sent home" (Exodus 18:2). Moses seems more excited to see Jethro, his father-in-law, a priest of Midian and fellow tribal leader, than to be reunited with his wife and family.

June 13, 2003 President's Father's Day Proclamation
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation Fatherhood is one of life's most challenging yet fulfilling endeavors. On Father's Day, we honor America's fathers and express our appreciation for all they do to help build a strong foundation for our children and our Nation. We also reaffirm our commitment to supporting fathers and encouraging responsible fatherhood in our society. Fathers have indispensable roles to play in the lives of their children: provider, protector, nurturer, teacher, and friend. Every caring father unconditionally loves his sons and daughters and strives for the best for his children in the future. In seeking to give their children the opportunity to succeed, fathers offer needed strength, guidance, and discipline. Fathers teach their children many basic things in life: how to read a book, throw a ball, tie a necktie, ride a bike, or drive a car. More importantly, they also help instill time-honored values in their children, such as hard work, respect, honesty, and good citizenship. Through their words, actions, and sacrifices, fathers play an important role in shaping the characters of their sons and daughters.

Today, fathers’ day still holds painful memories for me, but it is a pain thatis I have found a community of gay men of color who continue to teach me so
http://www.blackstripe.com/archives/articles/fathers/communityfathers.html
By Sisa Moyo Because of my own pain and the more than 10 years it took for me to learn that my escalating bitterness and hatred of my own father would destroy me, I have worked hard to ensure my son has the ability to form his own relationship with his father. One that is free of my own prejudices and emotional baggage. I feel that is not my place to tell him about the turbulence of my relationship with his father. He simply has to know he was conceived in love and for his presence, I am forever grateful to his father. Though I could never love his father again or be with him the way we once were, I marvel that he helped produce a child destined to do accomplish great things in this world. As I look at my son, I am grateful that we are part of a community with so many different types of men. I am forever grateful to my brothers who take the time out to talk to him, to love him to teach him, to reprimand him when needed, to answer his questions openly and honestly about being gay men of color. As a single, lesbian woman of color raising a black male child in a world that will try its best to keep him down and disrespect his talent, intellect and abilities, I am fully aware of the need for my son to have positive male role models. His ability to look back at his own life and remember all the men who played a role in his life will be what allows him to keep his head up. I am proud and forever grateful to have found them among the gay, bisexual, and transgendered community of the Capital District.
