The role of dads in the lives of their children has become a hot topic. All of this attention raises an important question: what impact does an involved father have on a child? Consider this:
  • Children with fathers who are involved in their lives tend to develop more self-confidence than children who lack an active father.
  • Children with fathers who are involved in their lives tend to be better problem-solvers than children who lack an active father.
Interestingly, it seems that more dads than moms acknowledge the important role that that fathers play on their children's healthy development. From the survey What Grown-Ups Understand About Child Development Because men tend to interact with their children in unique ways, a mother cannot replace a father's role. However, if a father is not part of a baby's life, the mother can involve other men in her life to help fill the void - including her father, her brother, or male acquaintances to whom she is very close. Our latest offering!
"Becoming a father inevitably alters our lives. The looming question for us as men is not really how to be a good father, but how to father with heart . Will we embrace fatherhood with curiosity and involvement or will we retreat? Fathering Right From the Start invites men to greet fathering as an adventure and challenges them to become the fathers they want to be and the dads our children really need.
Drawing on dozens of first hand accounts and his extensive experience as a father, stepfather, and family therapist, Dr. Heinowitz guides you through confusion, frustration, fear, and angerreactions spawned by the 'old rules' of fathering-from-a- distanceshowing that being a caring, effective dad can come naturally.

Fathering An Infant
For many men, nothing in their lives equals the thrill of watching their babies being born. Becoming a father is a big event. Being a father is something you can do every day. Showing your baby love and affection through holding, cuddling, playing, and diaper changing helps the baby feel secure and important to you. Babies learn about the world through their senses. The sense of touch is probably the most developed sense that babies have. Holding your baby gently but firmly helps them feel secure. You may worry that the baby is fragile, or that you will drop them. Do not let your fears keep you from enjoying your baby. Close contact with your baby lets them know and trust you. Taking care of a new baby is a learning experience for both mother and father. Because new mothers get so much attention, fathers may feel left out. Remember a father is as important to a baby's development as a mother is.

Daddy's Little Girl By Anita Bell Being 'Daddy's Little Girl' can teach your daughter to be helpless, make her the prey of unscrupulous men, and even make her a victim of abuse later in life. Fathers foster the very things they hope to avoid by raising a daughter who is 'Daddy's Little Girl.' When I was growing up, I often heard, "Oh, don't worry your pretty little head about that. Leave that worrying to those boys." The fact that I never heard this at home (Thanks, Dad and Mom) did not stop society from sending this message. My dad, more than any other person, taught me to be independent, think for myself, persist, and say "no" when it was needed. When I look back, this kept me from bowing to peer pressure in high school and college. It kept me safe from the very things he feared! It kept me "worrying my pretty little head" about something instead of leaving all of that up to the men in my life. It made me "want a man" rather than "need a man."

Greetings from the Fathering the Future Trust Fathering the Future Trust is a Christchurch based charitable trust that has been set up to raise the profile of fathers in society. Through the work of the Trust we seek to change existing cultures that do not value as parents, in the realms of work, schools and sport. Our vision is to promote a culture where fathers have an active and child centred parenting role. In all that we seek to achieve, we aim to put the welfare of children first. "While we acknowledge that different family structures exist, we believe children develop best with loving caring mother, father and whanau. In the context of all family structures we believe the positive role of the father is vital to the holistic development of the child." VICKI CABOT Contributing Editor I see it all the time. The need to call home, that is. It transcends age and accomplishment, drawing even the most successful among us to pick up the phone to report on our latest achievement or those of our offspring. A new job or new communal position may inspire a call. Closing a deal or snagging a lucrative contract may initiate the communication. Moving up, moving out, moving on, has all of us reaching for our cell phones and punching in the familiar numbers. Why?

"Do you want to try your two wheeler bike?" "Sure," she said, "I'll go get it." I was surprised by her willingness to try. Even though I believed she could have learned to ride a two-wheeler years ago, I had stayed patient and hoped she would develop a desire to try.

http://www.fambooks.com/daads/Fathers.html
My Father's Voice by Deena M. Beck Ehlert With supper finished it was mom's time for a break from her children. It was our time to be with dad. Cindy, my eight-year old sister, got the book while Tom, my six-year old brother, and I (four-years old) climbed on our gray couch. Book in hand, Cindy joined us on the couch and we all waited for mom to start the old reel-to-reel tape player. Dad was piloting airplanes in Vietnam for the Air Force. His one-year isolated tour would be over soon and he would be coming home. Throughout the year of his physical absence, our family received at least one tape a week from dad. Mom played a section to us every day. Dad began each day's session by asking each of us how our day had gone and what we had done. Speaking to the tape machine as if he could hear every word, each of us told him about our adventures. Unbeknownst to us, mom wrote down our responses so dad was kept up-to-date. In the subsequent tape, he praised our good deeds and gently corrected our errors. After everyone told dad their tales, he read to us from the book mom had sent. Cindy turned the pages while Tom and I followed along to his voice. Sometimes dad recorded himself teaching English to Vietnamese children in his neighborhood. It was always fun to hear the children talk in the strange language. Today, I don't remember the stories dad read, but I do remember the feelings I felt. I knew my father loved me because he talked to us nearly everyday, albeit by tape. Near the end of dad's year away, mom told us we were going to meet dad in California. We would be staying with Aunt Jenna Vee and Uncle Jack until dad arrived. The house was big, and it had a swimming pool! Mom loaded us all up and we made the few days journey from Texas to California. I was anxious to hear dad's voice again but had no recollection of what he looked like.

Fathering: Empowering Disabled Dads
Roger T. Williams, PhD

University of Wisconsin-Madison One night, when my 22-year-old son was seven years old, I was tucking him in bed. We had been talking about his day, then I said my usual "good night" and told him I loved him. He looked up at me and said "Dad, why do you keep telling me you love me? You've probably told me that a zillion times!" His comment took me by surprise and, for several seconds, I simply couldn't respond. Then, when the response came, it came from deep, deep inside of me: "Landon, I guess it's because when I was a kid I never heard my Dad say he loved me. I want you to know that I love you. I don't want you to ever have to wonder about that. And I want you to know that I will love you always, no matter what happens in your life." Landon looked up at me with his big brown eyes and said "Thanks, DadI love you too!" This story highlights the importance of making a conscious decision about how to father one's children. The one rock-solid gift we can give our sons and daughters is our unconditional love and support. A child's knowledge that he/she is loved, valued and appreciated is the basic building block of a strong self-concept. If we don't make this conscious decision, then we are likely to father the way our fathers fathered us and that's likely to be in much the same way that their father's fathered them. As the Biblical adage says "the sins of the fathers"the sins of alcoholism, drug addiction, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, violence and neglectcan be visited on the next generation of youth.

Jefferson Awards: Larry D. Davis / His fathering instincts set a precedent Tuesday, January 13, 2004 By John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette When the woman he'd had a child with told him she didn't want any part in raising the girl, Larry D. Davis took it in stride. When Allegheny County told the Homewood man that he couldn't raise Latosha alone, he successfully fought the system. When his wages were attached to pay support for a child that he was raising at his home, he fought the ruling and won. Larry Davis says the legal system is not set up to accommodate a single father raising a child, as he does with his daughter Latosha. (Annie O'Neill, Post-Gazette)

But the thing that really freaks him out, he says, is biology. "A single guy raising a pre-teen daughter?" He shakes his head and laughs. "Believe me, brother, there's a lot to learn." Fortunately, Davis, 43, is a fast learner. As a result of his efforts on behalf of fathers like him, he is a winner of one of seven local Jefferson Awards given for community service. On Jan. 29 at the Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland, he and the others will receive a medallion, and Kaufmann's will donate $1,000 in his honor to the
