Jackson County Fathering Court home about fathering court community partners supporting the child calendar THE FATHERING COURT IS ABOUT COLLABORATION Through a unique combination of needs assessment case management, and connecting people to necessary resources , the Fathering Court is challenging the notion of "dead-beat" dads and exploring the possibility that fathers, given a second chance, can become better fathers, more productive and responsible citizens, and help raise healthier, happier children. Who is a part of this collaboration and support? The real innovation in Fathering Court is the fact that all of the resources brought to bear already existed in the community, but through the project, became organized within the criminal justice system. Once a criminal non-support charge is filed, a case manager from the Family Support Division of the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office conducts a needs assessment for each individual case, through interviews with the father and custodial parent, and administering several tests. Based upon the information gained (i.e. education and employment, medical history, alcohol and drug use, criminal and legal problems, family and social support relationships and psychiatric status), the Family Court Commissioner reviews each case to determine the individual's appropriateness for the project. Eligible fathers are given the option of participating in 6-24 months of intensive counseling in exchange for dismissal of charges after completion. Weekly court sessions between the

Jackson County Fathering Court home about fathering court community partners supporting the child contact us calendar ABOUT FATHERING COURT Purpose To improve the lives of children by unifying resources and systems supporting fathers in our community D esigned with children in mind, the COMBAT initiative Fathering Court has instituted a model program to address financial responsibility and emotional connection of parents - specifically fathers - with their children. Development of this innovative model originated from COMBAT administrators, the Jackson County Prosecutor Family Support Division and court staff who saw the need. Fathering Court began in March 1998 in Jackson County, Missouri for fathers financially failing to support their children. Fathers are given the opportunity to participate in this court-supervised, case-managed program as an alternative to a jail sentence. A variety of issues and challenges are addressed including substance abuse, lack of effective fathering skills, literacy, medical and mental health, unemployment, and housing. More than a few of us are well into our fifties. All of us have busy lives. All of us were faced with the same rotten weather. So why did we drag ourselves from our cozy homes on such a lousy night to be with a group of men we hardly know? Clearly, we all want something from being with other men, but none of us are clear on what it is, or how to go about making it happen.
