Strengthening Fathers

In response to the dramatic trend toward fatherlessness in America, The National Center for Fathering was founded in 1990 by Dr. Ken Canfield to conduct research on fathering and to develop practical resources for dads in nearly every fathering situation.
Our Goal Our goal is to help men be better fathers. Most fathers who use this site are looking for practical tips and suggestions on how to improve their fathering of teens, school-aged children, adult children and grandchildren.
Fathering Tips
Articles are organized by the age of your child and whether you have a son or daughter, as well as by specific situation categories.

BECOMING A DAD: DR. BILL'S STORY
Career before children? Dads, let me share with you how I blew it with our first three children. Our first two came at a time when I was learning to be a doctor, and the third as I was getting a practice started. I bought into the philosophy of putting career pursuits ahead of everything. Having grown up without a father, I had no model of the importance of the father in child rearing. Besides, Martha was such a good mother. I felt I didn't need to be available. As with many fathers, I planned to get involved when the boys were old enough to throw a football. Big mistake! Know your child. Lesson number one for fathers: In order to discipline your children, you have to know them. And to know them, you have to be involved in nurturing them. Except for breastfeeding, there is nothing about babycare that father can't be involved in to some extent. I discovered I needed to hold our children more and open myself up to respond sensitively to their cries as best I could. I needed to realize that they needed what I had to offer as their father. My family needed me to be available to them.

Stories of Fathering Infants "The most important...work you and I will ever do will be within the walls of our own homes." Harold B. Lee
After reading stories and ideas in this section, please take about one minute and give us your evaluation on five feedback questions at the bottom of the page For fathers today, birth is not an experience of pacing the hospital hallway in anxious anticipation with a pocket full of cigars waiting to be handed out. Most fathers take an active role as the coach and sometimes even as the punching bag for their spouses during the birthing process. By being involved with the birth process, fathers begin generative fathering even before the child is born (Doherty, 1997) . As fathers become more involved in the birth process, they report feelings of closeness to their spouses and to their newborn children. Many fathers remember the first time holding their child as the beginnings of developing a close relationship with their son or daughter. Similarly, many fathers find tremendous joy (and struggles!) when involving themselves in the care of their infants. Marsiglio states that a father's involvement with his infant child serves as "a public symbol of their commitment to a more refined, progressive set of values" (1993, p. 5). Perhaps the most important thing a father can help his infant achieve is a sense of trust in the world. Fathers who care for their children in a responsive, consistent, and trustworthy way will help their precious infants to develop the sense that their needs will be met by loving individuals. This can be a foundation for healthy development throughout the child's life.

Fathering
Do you have any tips on how to be a great father?
Atherton, California
In any bookstore one can find several good resources for fathers, but the most important resource of all is one that is very difficult to obtain. That resource is locked up inside you. By spending some time alone, pen in hand, exploring what it means to be a great father to your children, you can unearth a gold mine. I would begin by recalling your own father when you were a child, picturing him, and making a list of all the things you most loved about your dad. Remember what you respected and what you enjoyed. Conjure up times that you miss. Make a list of some of the best memories you had together. Take time to treasure moments that touch you deeply when you think of him.

Steve Wozniak, Genius of Apple
Still Fathering the Computer Revolution By: John Shepler Steve Wozniak whips out a sheet of $2 bills, watching for the response of the counter clerk from the corner of his eye. As he cuts out a few to pay his bill, he casually remarks "I bought these from a guy wearing a blue mumu for $1.35 each. I don't know how he does it but I'm sure they're legal." More than once, this antic has brought in the police. But Steve doesn't care. He's a kidder, just a kid at heart really. It's a characteristic that makes him an excellent 5 th grade teacher, but would you also guess that Steve Wozniak was also one of the founding fathers of the personal computer revolution and a millionaire a hundred times over? He's been called the Wizard of Woz. It was he who single-handedly designed an entire personal computer, the Apple I. It was he who designed the Apple II and wrote the software to make it run. It wasn't the money he was after. There was no big money in personal computers in the mid-70's. That came later. Steve designed his computer from passion, a passion to see how well he could do it. He went around handing out copies of the schematic diagram for free. Today he goes around handing out laptop computers for free. His passion now is to light the fires of excitement in 5 th through 8 th graders and their teachers in his hometown of Los Gatos, California. He gives them computers, Internet accounts, lessons on how to program...and pranks.

The Medical Basis for Routine Circumcision
Are there health benefits which should convince you to circumcise your child? Just ask the public health authorities. (For comparison, consider that there are many public health authorities which strongly advocate the routine vaccination of children.) Many years ago, when it was thought important to prevent masturbation, American health authorities advocated circumcision.

http://www.fathering.com/
Building Stronger Kids by Strengthening Fathers Welcome to the home of Strong Fathers - Strong Families! Strong Fathers - Strong Families is dedicated to improving the lives of children by strengthening fathers and families for children. We believe that children need fathers as well as mothers and they need for their fathers to be STRONG! We work to help fathers be strong in their commitment, strong in their involvement, strong in their skills as fathers, and strong in their families. We find in our work around the state of Texas and around the country, that fathers are ready to step up to the challenge and have a "hunger" to be the best fathers that they can be. Many of the men that we work with did not have positive fathers for role models and are going it alone. When schools, child care centers, community programs, and churches promote father involvement, they promote stronger children. It is our goal to work with, as well as learn from, fathers across the spectrum to help families (all types of families) become a stronger support for their children. Check out the rest of our website to see where we are going, where we have been, and for information about strong fathers can bring up strong children.
