French Designer With MD Makes Fashion History
By Joelle Diderich PARIS, Fed 14 (Reuters) - Young fashion designer Lucie Carrasco had to overcome the usual hurdles to stage her first catwalk show in Paris sleepless nights sketching outfits, searching for financial backers, finding a suitable venue. It's a ruthless world at the best of times, but Carrasco has been forced to deal with an extra challenge. She suffers from muscular dystrophy, a disease that causes the muscles to wither and waste. The 20-year-old's debut in a gilded salon at the opulent Hotel Crillon on Wednesday featured statuesque models in slinky gowns and see-through mini-dresses, and was met with a standing ovation. "Sensuality is very important," the red-haired designer, who is confined to a wheelchair, told reporters after the show. "I was confronted with the problem of beauty at a young age, and it's true that I have always had a passion for beauty."

THE 1920 sfashion history. INTRODUCTION In this unit, you will learn about a time in United States history when fashions changed in just such a rapid manner.
http://www.alri.org/curric/Page3.html
THE 1920'sFASHION HISTORY INTRODUCTION: You may have noticed that some things in the world seem to change very quickly. For example, television programs and popular musical groups may not last for more than a year or even a few months. Fashion, also, can change from season to season, particularly among young people who are searching for their own special style. You can probably think of some things you used to wear that are no longer in style. Maybe you have laughed at pictures of yourself or your older relatives wearing outfits from only a few years ago that now look silly and old-fashioned. In this unit, you will learn about a time in United States history when fashions changed in just such a rapid manner. You will read about some of the reasons for those quick changes and the connections between historical events and the way that people dress. This exciting period happened within our own century but long before you were born. It is called The 1920's. In the time before the 1920's, women did not have as much freedom as they do today. They were not allowed to vote, attend certain schools, or enter certain professions. Most women lived with their parents until they were married. A woman who wanted to live on her own or control her own life might be considered odd or even dangerous. Their clothing also did not allow them much freedom. They wore long, heavy skirts with many layers and tightly-fitted, high-necked, long-sleeved blouses. Their long hair was piled on their heads and held in place with many pins. Underneath, they wore tightly-laced corsets that often prevented them from breathing deeply. A woman might expose her arms or throat in an evening dress, but she would never show her legs. Pants for women did not exist, except for the bloomers they wore under their skirts.

This site was developed and intended to be only an introduction to the history of western fashion.
While attempting to maintain scholarly standards, we want you to enjoy discovering the variety of dress that has been fashionable in the past 2500 years. This means that we have compiled information that we believe will help you begin to discover what people of the prosperous classes wore throughout history in Europe and the United States. We have selected the images and the terms to define as those most likely to describe the fashions of a period, but the lists of terms are not intended to be exhaustive in nature. To help you learn more about each period we have included a page that lists the primary reference books we found useful and a series of links to other sites that may further answer your questions and enhance your understanding.
We invite you to browse and explore the fascinating way in which our clothing has evolved in the past 2500 years. The first half of this work is the result of a Furman University Advantage Research Grant given to Amber Lewis, a rising Senior

A Historical Outline
history@fashionindia.net
Any account of historical Indian costumes runs into serious difficulties not for want of literary evidence or of archaeological and visual materials: of both of these there is a fair measure that is available. The difficulty arises when one tries to collate the information that can be culled from these sources. The descriptions in literary works, for all their great poetic beauty and elegance, are, in the nature of things, not precise and one has to guess and reconstruct. Sometimes the descriptions are so general that they can fit more than one costume quite different from each other. All this is not to say that a broad, general idea cannot be formed of the kinds of costumes worn in the ancient, medieval or the late medieval periods in India. What one is denied is the possibility of going into the many subtleties that Indian costumes possess. Their range is remarkably wide, according to the great size of the country, and geographical differences, and the bewildering diversity of its ethnic groups is added the complex factor of the coming in, at regular intervals, of foreign peoples into India at different periods of time and in varying numbers. The costumes that these people brought along did not stay necessarily apart from the mainstream of Indian dresses - that one could have dealt with - but, with the Indian genius for adaptation and modification, these costumes become altered, even metamorphosed, and eventually assimilated to the broad, native Indian range of dress.

P rohibition, the proliferation of jazz, and the development of mass media were the hallmarks of the 1920s. Youth was at a premium because so many young people were killed during the war. As a result, teenagers had a new freedom that they used to usher in the Afro-influenced jazz age. Clara Bow, Louise Brooks, Rudolf Valentino, and Josephine Baker were popular stars of the time, personifying many of the modern ideals. F or women, face, figure, coiffure, posture and grooming became important fashion factors in addition to clothing. In particular, cosmetics became a major industry. Glamour was now an important fashion trend, due to the influence of the motion picture industry and the famous female movie stars. T he 1920s saw the emergence of three major women's fashion magazines: Vogue, The Queen, and Harper's Bazaar. Vogue was first published in 1892, but its up-to-date fashion information did not have a marked impact on women's desires for fashionable garments until the 20's. These magazines provided mass exposure for popular styles and fashions. D uring the early 1920s, waistlines were at the waist, but were loose and not fitted. Women wore suits with long hemlines and somewhat full skirts, often with belts at the waist of the jackets. Dress and suit bodices alike were worn loose, even baggy. By 1923, waistlines began to drop to a point between the natural waist and hips, while styles continued to be loose and baggy. In 1924 the waistline dropped to the hip.

O ptimism abounded during the post-war years of the 1950s. The focus was on the baby-booming family and being a good housewife which was the ultimate measure of success. T he United States had emerged victorious from another bitter war. Television was now in many households, and the TV culture of I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners reflected ideals of the time. Stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, and Elvis Presley introduced a smoldering sex appeal into an age of conservatism. C onsumerism became a popular pastime in the 1950s, as the post-war boom provided a sense of economic optimism. New gadgets and gizmos proclaimed the future was here and liberated women from many onerous household tasks. Homemaking, it seemed, was not so bad when you had electric stoves, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, and the like. Women could now concentrate on making a comfortable home for their families, and still have time to have a life outside of the kitchen. T he constant rounds of barbecues, cocktail parties, and other social events all required dressing up. Christian Dior’s 'New Look' influenced fashion, but so did the conservative elegance of Coco Chanel. Charles Jourdan introduced a new kind of shoe style, the stiletto heel, in 1951. As time went on the goal was for the slimmest possible heel, eliminating earlier "chunky" styles. The pump was the basic shoe, but its toes might be cut, the vamps curved or cut in enticing 'V's, or the heels molded into a variety of shapes. Every color of the rainbow was used; shoes were intended to match an outfit perfectly.
