40 years of YSL fashion history Suzy Menkes IHT
Friday, March 5, 2004 PARIS Yves Saint Laurent has no doubt which artist gave him the most fun over 40 fashion years.
"It was Andy [Warhol], he was part of a whole universe that existed in 1966," says the designer. "He was a marvelous person, inspiring in everything he did. He had a magic when he and his clique came here from New York and we went out together."
Two of those inspirations - a geometric Pop Art dress, and another with the silhouette of a naked body traced on the front panel - are displayed in front of Warhol's four-in-one-portrait of Saint Laurent.
Then the designer's images were shy and angst-filled. Now his crescent smile illuminates his face as he leads his French bulldog Moujik into the exhibition space and contemplates the cultural foundation he and Pierre Bergé have founded.
On Friday, they will open the doors of the Avenue Marceau couture house, its pomp and gilt made over into a modernist space where "Yves Saint Laurent Dialogue with Art" will be on public show (from March 10 to July 18). Bergé bounds up the staircase at the side entrance, where one of Saint Laurent's most dramatic outfits opens the display: the drape of a midnight blue crepe dress below the gilded metallic breastplate created with the artists Claude and Xavier Lalanne in 1969.

Introduction
The benefits of taking Family and Consumer Science classes are it builds self-esteem through the knowledge of applicable skills that can be used in later stages of life, for example, as a vocation or possible career, a better understanding of how clothes are influenced by styles of the past, gain an insight into fashion that will satisfy both immediate and long range goals, improving social skills and decision making skills, selecting appropriate clothing for different occasions, personal satisfaction, and increased understanding of history, literature, and art to build knowledge about artist and designers. In today's society, images of fashion can be seen all over, but are strongly displayed in the media with television, music videos, commercials, and other means. We as people within society are human billboards for companies to display their name and logos. Trends have been set throughout history changing from decade to decade. Society has given the impression that in order to fit in or be cool, you should own and wear designer labels. Those who wear Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klien are more likely to fit in than those who chose to wear no name clothing. We also look to entertainers throughout the media and major fashion trends to determine our look. Being original with style is not as common and trends set back in the 1970's are returning to main stream fashion. Fashion is for everyone, but a sense of style is individual and personal. I believe that if we had a better understanding of fashion history, we would be less likely to follow trends and be trend setters.

Welcome to the New Costume Bookshelf! If you've visited this site in the past, you may have browsed my online bookstore in association with Amazon.com. I ended my association with Amazon when they refused to pull a book promoting pedophilia from their store. You may read my e-mail exchange about this with Amazon.com here . Because of Amazon.com's response, I removed all links to their site and their products and no longer purchase anything through them. I have never been a big fan of boycotts, but this is one cause that really hits home with me as the mother of four young children. I would urge you to join me in hitting Amazon.com in the pocketbook and telling them why you are doing so by dropping them a line at feedback@amazon.com . All of the other "big" online retailers carry this same title, but I am happy to report that Powell's Books no longer does. They pulled the title immediately when a customer contacted them, asking them to do so. Please take a moment to drop a line to thank Powell's for this decision, which is amazing in light of the negative "canned" responses the other big bookstores have churned out. They need to know that more than a few people applaud this decision. I've now rebuilt the Costume Bookshelf and stocked it with titles from Powells. I hope you enjoy browsing!

A Day in the Past
Freedom of the Flapper
The roaring '20s brings to mind Prohibition, The Crash of '29 and women in flapper dresses dancing the Charleston. Eighty years have made liquor legal, the stock market somewhat stable and the flapper dress an unwavering favorite for eveningwear. The spirit of the historic flapper dress is girlish and luxurious bedecked with sequins and beads. It's the perfect after-dark opportunity to show a little leg after hiding them under the pervasive floor length skirts of the season. To achieve the girl-woman form of the 1920's, a short loose corset was worn with brassieres. Of course the form was more achievable for slender women. There were still corsets, much lighter that the past ones, to help larger women achieve this. There is also the corset and bandeau that was popular during the jazz age. The two garments would produce a roll of fat, so suspenders were added to the bra to help pull down over the top of the corset belt. The next step was the corselette (an undergarment combining girdle and brassiere).

FASHION HISTORY IN TURKEY
Vural Gokcayli
Starting in his article as "I applaud the idealist ladies working at the Library of Works by Woman and the foundation of Information Center. Besides all kind of financial and moral difficulties, their war is an incredible event of civil organization; congratulations: I invite everybody to help." Vural Gokcayli is carrying out in detail the history of fashion in Turkey beginning from the period of Osman I. He says that "the Turkish people preserved until 1808 their costume in a conservative manner" and "Mahmut II and his mother Naksidil are the first to dress like Europeans" "When revolution took place in France, economics, politics and even costumes had changed with Napoleon. We also see its slight influence in the Ottoman Empire." He states that Mahmut II is the leader in this aspect and draws the attention on the development of the Law, the Constitution and Girl schools during this period: "with the opening of girl schools, the intellectual woman had met with Europe through reading." The development lasted during the periods of Ahmet III and Abdulmecit; it is stated in the article that women on excursion began to dress appropriate to fashion with trends starting at palaces together with the Tanzimat / Political Reforms securing some social and cultural rights to the Turkish woman. It is said that

Have you ever wondered about fashion history? Like when runway shows came about, why designer clothes are so popular, or even how Paris became the epicenter of fashion instead of, say, London or Madrid? As the fashion world prepares to trot out its latest ready-to-wear collections, now seems an appropriate time to offer a glimpse into this exclusive world. While people have been interested in fashion for thousands of years, the industry we know today did not begin to take shape until around 1850. After hundreds of years of opulent fashions, two things happened concurrently to birth the industry we know as haute couture: the invention of the continuous stitch sewing machine, by Isaac Singer, and the instant popularity of a dressmaker named Charles Frederick Worth. Prior to 1850, 70% percent of all clothes were hand stitched by the people who wore them. Clothes were a commodity item, and their excellence dependent upon the skill of the person who made them.

With the ladies of England there's none can compare
With the sleeves on their arms like a coal-porter's sack,

The ladies hooped petticoats dragging around,
Just cover a mile and three-quarters of ground.
Oh, I must have a husband young Jenny did say,
I will be in the fashion so buxom and gay,
With a bustle before and another behind,
And under my trousers a big crinoline. When I'm married, my husband upon me will doat, Looking so fine in a hooped petticoat. To have one, I'll just go a week without grub, Or else knock out the staves of our big washing-tub. There was an old lady went down through the Strand, She was linked in the arms of a dashing young man, Her hooped petticoat caught a coal-heaver's clothes. Down he went like a donkey wop bang on his nose. The lasses that wander the street in the dark, Swear they cannot get custom unless they're smart, If their skin is as black as a Welch Billy Goat
