th Century Fashion Women Fashions: Welcome to The Costume Gallery's research area for 20th Century Fashions during the 1970s. This era fashions are frequently marked by designers such as Givenchy, Norell, and Oscar de la Renta. The 1960s trend of mini skirts, bell bottoms, and long hair, lasted through this decade. Polyster knitted fabrics broke the ground to expand the continuing look. If you didn't wear polyster, the preferred textile was denim blue jeans. Skirts came in three lengths in the 1970s, mini, midi, and maxi. Television and film reflected the way people dressed such as Annie Hall and Saturday Night Fever. The latter half of the decade's fashions were heavily influenced by Rock 'n' Roll's Disco music. There were many fashion trends in this era as you will see by the references below. Various social trends were at work during the 1920s. Historians have characterized the decade as a time of frivolity, abundance and happy-go-lucky attitudes. Several years had passed since the end of World War I. People felt free-spirited and wanted to have fun. As a result, fashions became less formal.

Silhouette The body outline was a very straight, curveless figure, with streamlined, close-fitting hats and hairstyles. Skirts fell between the knee and mid-calf in different seasons, for both day and eveningwear. One exception was a style of formal dress with a straight bodice and low-waisted flaring skirt with an uneven, ankle-length hem. In general, the 20s were an elongation and simplification of lines.

Fashion History? According to Whom?
or... History?
We don't need no stinking history! Dear Lauren,
So much has happened over the years. Wars and revolutions, edicts and referendums, dynasties and one night-stands... You'd think we'd all have learned something by now! After all, the great philosopher George Santanyana once admonished, "Those who cannot remember the past, are condemned to repeat it." Well, he should have reprised that to read, "those who cannot remember the fashions of the past are condemned to buy them again, at high end retail." Adding insult to injury is the fact that clothing was better crafted in the good old days, when people took their time and weren't in such a hurry. For whatever it's worth, here's my personal zeitgeist about fashion in the 20th century, starting with the 1920's...but I must admit, the closer I am to living within a decade, the harder it is for me to remain enthusiastic about it. Plus ca change, c'est la meme chose

1920's Wedding Styles Cloche or Cap veils were de rigueur for the twenties, fitting over the entire head and then falling gracefully over the shoulders. Often made from net backed laces, they became more and more elaborate, some using the finest Lyon and Brussels lace. These were decorated with satin or velvet ribbon, metallic gimp and wax blossoms at the ears. The corners of this veil were rounded and as in the photo at left, made from unmistakable silk tulle as it fell straight to the floor with no body. This brides cap veil incorporated a large pouf at the back that was balanced by her simple daisy and crown trim. Her over the elbow opera gloves and her huge bouquet with traditional ribbon knots were cutting edge twenties style. Note the similarity between the following bride's silhouette, from the cut of her sleeve to her over the elbow gloves and single strand of pearls; the two brides are almost identical in style.
Headpieces in the roaring twenties became more and more elaborate in contrast to the simplistic appearance of the rather loose cut dresses of the period. The chemise dress appeared to go straight up and straight down and the focus of style went to their, er... heads. Veils became yards of dreamy silk tulle that was often photographed in a graceful gather at the Bride's feet. This bride's veil is rectangular cut, perfectly matching her lack of waistline typically associated with gowns of this decade.

Couture: then and now
Clothes define people. A person's clothing, whether it's a sari, kimono, or business suit, is an essential key to his or her culture, class, personality, or even religion. The Kyoto Costume Institute recognizes the importance of understanding clothing sociologically, historically, and artistically. Founded in 1978, the KCI holds one of the world's most extensive clothing collections and has curated many exhibitions worldwide. With an emphasis on Western women's clothing, the KCI has amassed a wide range of historical garments, underwear, shoes, and fashion accessories dating from the 18th century to the present day. Showcasing a vast selection from the Institute's archives of skilled photographs depicting the clothing expertly displayed and arranged on custom-made mannequins, Fashion History is a fascinating excursion through the last three centuries of clothing trends. The KCI believes that "clothing is an essential manifestation of our very being" and their passion and dedication positively radiate from every page of this book.
