TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NEW FASHIONS OR FADS
Fashions and fads are constantly changing or being "re-invented". You can take advantage of this by providing a product or service that caters to contemporary fashions or lifestyles. Such a product or service may be something which does not yet exist, or it may be an item which already exists but would benefit from greater promotion. Alternatively, it could be something which existed in a past era an idea ready to be recycled (e.g. bell bottoms). Fashions offer longer-term business opportunities while fads are more intense and provide short-term opportunities. Because a fad experiences a rapid rise and fall in popularity, the opportunities presented require a more finely tuned response, first to provide goods, then to reduce inventories.
Some Examples
  • The thriving T-shirt industry addresses a broad fashion opportunity, and at the same time caters to fads through the designs and messages which appear on the shirts.

    Fashion in the 1920's
The Roaring Twenties brought many fads and fashion rages. During the 1920's, Americans were given the honor of being called the "best- dressed". Several things contributed to this honor: Affordable pricing, mass production clothing, the birth of the "flapper girl", and rise of fashionable movie stars that Americans wanted to imitate.
The style and cut of women's clothing during the 1920's changed drastically. Waistlines dropped dramatically while hemlines rose scandalously. Turned-down hose were no longer black, but beige. Rouged knees, bobbed hair, and figureless figures characterized the "radical flappers". These women violated many of the rules dictating appropriate clothing and behavior for women. The flappers took their look one step further by hiding their foreheads with a ribbon or bulky hat. Large foxfurs, dangling earrings and concealed eyebrows were part of the fad so many "moral" Americans looked down upon.
A cloche was a popular style hat. It was worn over a bobbed haircut and pulled down over the forehead.
The "flapper girl" trend peaked in 1926, leaving materials such as silk, chiffons, georgettes, crepes, and voiles in high demand. Beads, sequins, and feathers also adorned the fashionable dresses. Coco Chanel, a role model for the flapper, provided many styles, including the popular single strand of pearls. Corsets were no longer popular, but instead the "sexless" figure was favored. Scarfs were often draped over the shoulders if one could not afford a dead fox neck piece. However, the one thing that distinguished the flapper from anyone else was the bobbed haircut. Although, efforts were made to revive long hair, the bob remained stylish.

People were wearing this style last year, but now they aren't. If something is " in ", it is very popular or fashionable with a lot of people at the same time. If something is " out ", it was popular before (last year, for example), but it is no longer popular.
    Examples:
Long skirts were in last year, but they are out this year. (Long skirts were popular last year, but now no one is wearing them.)
I think short hair is in this year. All my friends are getting their hair cut very short. Long hair just doesn't seem to be as popular this year. Other ways to say something is popular
Other expressions can be used to talk about things which are popular or fashionable with a lot of people at a given time. Here are some examples written by students from Japan.

    Fads or Fashion?
What's the difference between fads and fashion? Here a top tuxedo tailor talks about what makes a look that will last and what trends will be out of style before the pictures come back from the photographer. "Unlike women's fashions that change with each season, men's new tuxedo styles come out only in the spring," said David Steele, owner of TuxedosDirect.com
    Millennium Jacket
According to Steele, the new look of the millennium is a jacket that's three to four inches longer than a classic coat and has five to seven buttons. "They're single-breasted and come just above the knee, similar to the dusters worn in the movie 'Tombstone,' but with different collars." Even more classic tuxedos are coming with extra buttons. "Three-button jackets are what one-button tuxes were five or six years ago," said Steele.
    Windsor Ties
Another newer look is the Windsor tie. Also called a four-in-hand, it's similar to the longer style necktie worn with a business suit.

Music/Movies /TV/Fashion/Fads Introduction I wasn't born until 1948, the end of this decade. I am however sure, I was affected by everything that happened during that time, either directly or indirectly.
I know that both of my parents loved music. I can remember some old type of victrola, or phonograph as it was called, that my mother played records on and it seems that it actually had an arm on the side that you had to wind up to play the music.
My dad was a dancing fool. He used to date girls based on their ablity to dance. The popular dance was the "jitterbug", which seems to be making a come back. Anyway, my dad told me that when entering dance contests during the depression, that he'd frequently enter the contest with one of his sister's as his partner. They were great dancers too. I understand that he won frequently. This is no surprise to me since he was good at most things he was interested in doing.
I remember both my dad and my husband's dad loving the old big bands. I remember my mother swooning over Perry Commo and sing "When the Moon hits Your Eyes." I can recalling listening to a soap opera on the radio and I think it is one that is still on T.V.
I didn't talk much when I was a kid for some unknown reason but I could sing the jingle that went along with the commercials on T.V. and radio. "I like to go riding with daddy...And he always takes me of course,... We stop for our gas and our oil ,... at the sign of the flying Red Horse!"...Texico...I think! And who could ever forget Howdy Doody and Buffalo Bill or Bob...oh just can't remember for sure....

Betz, Family Life Consultant, Oregon Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Volume 6 Number 8 Fads, Fashion, and Peers Recently I was driving near a school and noticed two teenage boys, about 13, walking along: baggy pants, oversized coats, and the ubiquitous baseball caps turned backwards. I pondered the power of fads, fashion, and peers. Who started such a fad, I wondered. Yes, kids will have their heroesathletes, rock stars, movie celebrities they copy their clothing. How should Christian parents relate to current fads and fashions? It is natural for teens to pull away from parents. This process begins with adolescence. "In adolescence, for better or worse, children show their autonomy and independence from adults by their appearance. Actually, considering all the other ways kids can show autonomy and independence, most appearance issues are really fairly harmless. It's not worth the trouble to engage in control battles over them." Parenting Teens With Love and Logic , p. 161.

Mood Rings and Bell Bottom Pants Mood Rings People of the 1970’s had their own unique fashion. People grew their hair long. Some people even had Afros. People wore wide Bellbottoms and Hip huggers. People wore platform shoes and wallabees which was the comfort shoe of the 1970’s. They also wore Velour shirts and Disco shirts. The newest thing in the 1970’s were mood rings. Mood rings came about during the early 1970’s. These rings were a way for people to express their moods. The ring would change color according to your body temperature. Golden Yellow meant that you were tense, blue meant that you were happy, purple meant you were moody, black meant you were down, reddish brown meant you were insecure, clear meant you were a fraud and green meant that you were easily amused. Joshua Reynolds invented mood rings. These rings contained a heat sensitive liquid crystal encased in quartz. Through mood rings people had another way to assert their independence. They were able to let everyone known the way that they were truly feeling. People were able to have fun and express themselves through mood rings. These are the qualities that couple Ericsson and Roxanne Ang-Farillas envisioned for the women’s apparel brand that they established 10 years ago. And the formula succeeded, that after 10 years their brainchild steadily expanded to 27 branches all over the country. From a 10 square-meter stall in Shoppesville, Greenhills, Plains and Prints has earned a following from women who prefer stylish yet sensible everyday fashion. The fashion show was held simultaneous with the store opening for three reasons. Plains and Prints marketing consultant Jenny Gonzales said they aim to strengthen the brand’s image as a reasonably-priced women’s apparel with discriminating fashion sense. Another reason is for the brand followers to see the Plains and Prints endorser up close. The third reason is “to thank our patrons,” Gonzales said. Joining Barretto in the fashion show were the finalists of Dream Girl 2004, who displayed the brand’s latest summer collection. Pastel colors such as baby blue and pink of various tones were mixed and matched with the classic neutral colors that Plains and Prints has been long known for—black, brown, khaki, red shades that fit well with the brand’s collection of shirts, blouses, skirts and jackets.

Lunchtime is a great time to catch up with your friends, review those math notes, or just unwind from a busy morning of classes. Make the most of it by packing (or buying) delicious and nutritious school lunches.
    • Get in the habit of packing (or helping your guardian pack) your lunch the night before. It saves time in the morning (when you're probably running around looking for matching socks!) and allows more time to plan meals. Tired of turkey? Peanut butter and jelly passe? Try spreading veggie cream cheese on whole wheat bread and topping with sliced carrots, cucumbers or tomatoes. Hummus, a zesty Middle Eastern spread, is great on pita bread with sliced carrots or sprouts. Knock out soda from your routine. Try juice, water, or one of those cool, new yogurt shakes instead.
