Reunion High Home Fashion and Fads Twiggy, 1967 1950's to Present Throughout most of the 50's the feminine hour glass figure was embellished. This "New Look" was derived from French fashion designer Christian Dior. This style was a celebration of femininity after the dark days of W.W.II. A full billowing long skirt was topped off with a fitted top that showed off the bust and narrowed at the waist. Hats and gloves were essential accessories. Other different and derivative styles popular in the 50s included: two piece bathing suits; circle-skirts, bobby sox and ponytails; sack dresses; women wore pants outside the home, hooded dresses; short shorts; poodle hair styles for women; pink clothing for men and women; duck tail and apache hairstyles for men. Famous redheaded supermodel Suzy Parker displayed many of the decades fashions. Youth fashions could be broadly classified as preppy and rebel. Preppy styles might include a ponytail, circle-skirts and bobby sox for girls and a crew cut with loose fitting jeans and khakis with a button down collar shirts for boys. More rebellious youth might wear black leather jackets, undershirts with rolled up sleeves, duck tails and tight jeans.

THE PICTURE GALLERY
pictures and photographs of fashion from 1920-1990
This corset was worn in the 1920's, when women dared to be different by cutting their hair and wearing skirts that fell to the knees. A boyish, waif-like figure was 'all the rage' in the 20's. To achieve this flat look, women wore corsets like these that hooked onto the garter belt, there by binding the breasts down against the rib cage.
A pair of women's shoes in the 20's A couple dressed in evening attire. The woman is wearing a dress that stops at the knees and has no waist to accentuate her boyish figure. This fashion statement was called the 'Flapper'. As you can see, mans fashion has not changed much through the decades.
When the 30's arrived, women's hair grew a little longer but still had the same carefree style. Curls, especially those around the face and on the forehead, were very popular back then. This woman is wearing a balloon sleeved dress with a tiny cinched waist. Small skirts with slits up the side or back were very fashionable. This is a purple velvet evening dress, with a typical scoop neck, flowing short sleeves and pleats from the shoulders down.

They didn't have separate toes, just a compartment for the big toe and another for the rest of your toes. Then, I finally convinced Mom to get me a pair of rainbow ones like the ones on the bottom, with a glove-like spot for each toe!! Keeps them warm individually, don't ya know? :)

Fads and Fashion in Economic Reforms:
Washington Consensus or Washington Confusion?

By Moises Naim
Editor
Foreign Policy Magazine
October 26, 1999 Working Draft of a Paper Prepared for the IMF Conference on Second Generation Reforms, Washington, D.C. Contents
  • What Washington Consensus?
  • The Making of a Global Brand Name
  • The Evolution of Common Wisdom in the 1990s
[or The Washington Consensus Meets Global Surprises]
    ...
  • Conclusion: The Five I's of Economic Reforms Tables
  • Table 1. Two Stages of Economic Liberalization
  • Table 3. Sources of Institutional Malfunction
What changes more often, the fashion designs coming from Paris and Milan or the economic policy designs Washington and Wall Street prescribe to countries that are less developed or that are emerging from decades of communism? While this comparison may seem frivolous, a review of the ideas that have guided thinking and action about economic reforms in this decade shows that they are as faddish as skirt lengths and tie widths. The difference, of course, is that economic policy fashions affect the way millions of people live and define their children's chances for a better future. Ideas about what makes a country prosperous have always been fickle. This decade has been no different in terms of the variety and volatility of the policy prescriptions that became dominant among academics, policy makers and the better-informed segments of the world's population. The 1990s, however, have been different in one significant respect: During this decade, the world has been under the impression that there was a clear and robust consensus about what a poor country should do to become more prosperous. This misimpression clearly owes a lot to the surprising popularity of the term "Washington Consensus," the name that economist John Williamson gave in 1989 to a list of ten policy recommendations for countries willing to reform their economies.

    Bellbottoms
These wide-legged pants were derived from Navy styled uniforms and became very popular with the young society in the 1960's. Elvis Presley, Sonny and Cher helped make bellbottoms a fashion statement for the hippies and counter-culture audience. They were typically made of denim until they were produced with corduroy and polyester so they could be worn in any situation. Bellbottoms were still popular in the 1970's during the disco years and even in the 1990's when the Gen X crowd was wearing them to be cool too.

    Platform Shoes
Although popular in the late 1960's, these high-heeled shoes were more popular in the 1970's during the disco period. Originally, one to two inches high, they grew in height and variety even as people were being treated for twisted or broken ankles caused by lack of mobility. The platform shoe made a comeback among women in the 1990's and still can be seen today.

    The Twist
Chubby Checker made this dance style very popular when he appeared on American Bandstand in the early 1960's. It originated in a small New York club called The Peppermint Lounge in 1961. The dance was featured in a few films in the early sixties but quickly faded when other dances such as the Mashed Potato and the Watusi were introduced to TV shows and movies.

    AMERICAN CULTURAL HISTORY
T he chaotic events of the 60's, including war and social change, seemed destined to continue in the 70's. Major trends included a growing disillusionment of government, advances in civil rights, increased influence of the women's movement, a heightened concern for the environment, and increased space exploration. Many of the "radical" ideas of the 60's gained wider acceptance in the new decade, and were mainstreamed into American life and culture. Amid war, social realignment and presidential impeachment proceedings, American culture flourished. Indeed, the events of the times were reflected in and became the inspiration for much of the music, literature, entertainment, and even fashion of the decade.
