Heidi Taff Asst. Entertainment Editor -Wednesday, October 02, 1996 What does an American look like? What fads and fashions have we adopted into our heritage throughout the decades? To try and describe one common element would be a waste of breath. Chico State University's Museum of Anthropology's twelfth annual photo competition and show entitled, "America in Style: Fads and Fashions," documents Americans' true style through color and black and white photographs. Photos from all over the United States have been chosen and put on display for both their anthropological value as well as artistic content. On display are family snapshots as well as staged photos of grooming habits, jewelry and scenery landscapes. There were numerous photos of people in hats. Hats represent a big fad in America. People wear them to sport their favorite athletic team, to keep the sun out of their eyes, rain off the hair and countless other reasons. "Woman in a White Hat" was of a woman posing with a white straw hat on her head. The explanation underneath the photo said the rule of fashion was white hats only appear on Memorial Day and are closeted after Labor Day; two very traditional American holidays. Another photo, taken at a carnival, was of corn dogs, hot dogs and corn on the cob. "Diets aside, it would not have been fashionable to eat otherwise," read the caption.

Youth and Heroes
Fashion fads for men were often based on the heroes of the moment, such as sports figures. Golfers Bobby Jones and Wlater Hagen, tennis player Bill Tilden, and swimmer Johnny Weissmuller provided youth with clothing styles as well as record-breaking performances. Football players such as Red Grange and the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame promoted the fashions of coats, such as the raccoon coat and camel hair polo coat. World famous aviator Charles Lindbergh inspired a craze of leather driving jackets. The young Prince of Wales, with is easy charm and good taste in suits, also became a symbol of male fashionability.
Suits
While Americans were worshiping youthful sports heroes, the general dress of Americans was becoming more youthful looking. Men were abanding the hefty-looking, broad-shouldered suits for skinnier, unpadded, more boyish looking jackets. Suit pants also underwent a major change. Creases appeared on the front and the sides while cuffs replaced flat hems. Pants were fastened by buttons or hooks. Belts also started to replace the suspender as the device used to hold up pants.
The Collegiate Styles
The worship of youth also brought about a following of the fashions worn of college campuses. For some reason, American men adopted extraordianry pants from Oxford University. These pants were baggy

Subject: Fashion fads for the middle aged
Message:

For a year or so now, I've woken up to a ton of e-mails each morning with the subject marked BUSH LIED! — or, to be more precise, BUSH LIED!!!!!!!
I'm not one who thinks it helpful to characterize a policy difference as a ''lie.'' So, when John Kerry says he supports the Kyoto Treaty even though he voted for a bill that declared the United States would never ever ratify it, that doesn't mean he's a ''liar,'' it just means that, well, to be honest, I haven't a clue what it means, you better to take it up with him, now he's out of the hospital after his elective surgery.
''Elective surgery" means you vote to have the operation, and then spend the next year insisting you've always been strongly opposed to the operation.

Instructions for language assistants are in italics. Introduce this theme by asking students in pairs or small groups to write the names of as many toys as they can. An alternative is to use a catalogue from a toy shop or leaflet from a supermarket to brainstorm the names of toys around at the moment. Anticipate the theme. What types of toy are popular this year? Are being advertised this year on TV?

    WOMEN'S FASHION IN ANCIENT ROME
Fashion has been known to make a statement in every culture and civilization throughout the centuries. From the Hellenistic Era to present day, fashion fads and statements evolved from similar backgrounds to make styles that seem new, but are really just "doctored-up" versions that can be traced back to the times of ancient Rome.
    Clothing
According to Friedlander, the women of ancient Rome wore a long tunic called a "stola." The stola, which went down to the feet of the wearer, often had a woolen mantle over it called a "palla"(47). The positioning of the tunic was complicated due to the many layers of the cloth used for the different styles of the garment. In most cases, the stola was worn as described: first, a long-sleeved tunic was put on, and over it, a shorter tunic with short sleeves. A cloak fastened with a buckles on the right shoulder completed the outfit for wearing. The difference between the tunic of a man and a woman is that the tunic worn by a woman often had sleeves fastened with buckles. The over-garment was often sleeveless and a cloak would be worn over it. As stated by Leffingwell, the favric of the tunic varied because of the limited amounts of "costly material" and the disadvantage of not being "climate adaptable" in cold weather (123). Due to these limits of options, the tunic was made mainly of wool (and even silk if the wearer was able to afford it). During cold weather, a heavy woolen cloak was worn over the tunic (because of the tunic's flimsy material). Lower class women usually wore simple wool tunics with holes for the heads and arms, held by a belt at the waist. On occasion, tunics were made out of cool linen for summerwear but because of linen's scarcity at the time, it was rarely ever worn at all.
