ROBERT PIGUET
Robert Piguet was born in Yverdon, Switzerland in 1901. After training as a banker, Piguet went to Paris in 1918, where he worked with REDFERN and POIRET. He founded his own salon in 1933. He hired or used designs by many famous designers, as well as using his own designs. Antonio Castillo worked from 1936 to 1944, Christian DIOR worked from 1938 to 1942, James GALANOS was designer from 1947 to 1948, and Marc BOHAN worked under Piguet in the 50's. Hubert GIVENCHY and Pierre BALMAIN were also Piguet designers. He favoured dramatic gowns in a romantic style and created many costumes for the theatre, as well as well-cut suits and softly tailored dresses. His work was admired for its uncluttered yet flamboyant shapes, and silhouettes. Here, on the left, is a great dramatic black wool coat from the 1930's, with a tubular collar, and a wide lapel that curls back like the petals of a flower. He retired in 1951 and died in 1953. What Historians, Artists, and Fashion Designers Have in Common
Most historians like things tidy. Most poets couldn't care less. When the editors of a new volume of poetry couldn't find a "common link," that was fine. Poets thrive on chaos. (It is, after all, where creativity comes from.) Historians are less keen. For them knowledge depends on order. They must sometimes start their work in a welter of possibilities, and, often, an archive of heaping confusion. But they must make the data march two by two (and three by five) towards order and understanding. Plenitude, to the extent it has invaded even the world of knowledge, is especially hard on them. They are tested by what one practitioner calls its "splintering, fragmentation, disarray, shapelessness, inaccessibility, incoherence, chaos, anarchy and meaninglessness." At the end of the day, they want ideas that are "overarching." Less and less frequently do they get them. We might expect fashion to resemble poetry: to embrace chaos, to thrive on disorder. But no, the world of fashion modeled itself on a monarchical system. Each house was a court, dominated by a prince and ruthless competition with the other great courts.

104. Marc Bohan
Career profile of designer's work at other labels before creating his own provided.
http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/bohan.html
MARC BOHAN
Marc Bohan was born Roger Maurice Louis Bohan in Paris, France, in 1926. He gained valuable practical experience in fashion from his mother, who was a milliner. He obtained a certificate in art and philosophy from the Lycee Lakanal in Paris. He gained his early design experience by working for several of Paris' leading couture houses, Piguet, Edward Molyneux and Jean Patou between 1945 and 1958. During these years, he also designed for Madeleine de Rauch and worked as a freelance designer for a New York clothing company. In 1958, he joined the house of Dior, who sent him to London as Director of their English operations. When Yves St. Laurent left for military service in 1960, he was recalled to Paris to take on the position of Chief Designer and artistic Director. The establishment people at Dior felt that Yves St. Laurent had gone too far with his later collections and that Bohan would restore haute couture to the rather more sober traditions set by the grand masters. Mrs Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of USA President John F. Kennedy, often wore clothes created by Marc Bohan. Here on the left is an apricot colour linen dress and coat set from his Fall collection of 1960 which Mrs Kennedy wore on several occasions in 1961.

Willard Van De Bogart The Portal Messenger Home Earth Portal Controls T he world of fashion and the world of computers have one thing very much in common. They both change. Keeping up with fashion trends as well as new developments in software for the fashion designer can be a full time job. When CAD first hit the fashion scene in 1987 there were few designers, let alone garment manufactures, who were taking to this new technology. When attempts were made to analyze these new CAD software packages they were usually left for the MIS directors or the systems analysts. Today all that has changed. The designer is finding a more predominant role in all the decision making within the garment industry in terms of what software best feels like a creative tool in order to design clothes. As I mentioned at the start, it is difficult to follow every development, but there are new players on the fashion software block that are worth looking at. Before I mention some of these newer software packages I want to mention right off that each package satisfies a particular need, and it is still the most important consideration in any purchase of a piece of software. These needs range from a pure merchandising tool, to a complete CAD/CAM/CIM approach, to just a fashion illustration approach. In 1987 I was a consultant, and researcher for new garment manufacturing upstart companies, and today I work for Computer Selection, an Apple Macintosh dealership based in San Francisco, providing computer systems to the design industry. San Francisco is the 3rd largest center for fashion manufacturing in the United States spearheaded by Levi Strauss, Esprit, and Jessica McClintok with scores of new boutiques, and advertising a brand new fashion design center. From this vantagepoint I am in constant touch with new software developments impacting the design industry.

111. Christopher Bailey
Career track outlined for the current designer at Burberry.
http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/bailey.html
Christopher Bailey
Christopher Bailey was born in England in 1972, the son of a carpenter father and a visual designer mother. His grandmother was Italian, from whom he believes he got his love of fashion. At 18 years old, he won a place in a two-year fashion course at the Royal College of Art in London. Fortune favoured him when Donna Karan visited the college and asked him to work for her. In 1990 he joined her house in New York and remained there for 2.1/2 years. He was the right-hand man to Peter Speliopoulos, who was designing for Donna Karan. He says he learned a great deal at that time. In 1993, Tom Ford met him and offered him a place with Gucci and Christopher ended up working 5.1/2 years with Ford, from 1995 to 2001. Being at heart British, Christopher then wanted to work with a designer in the U.K. His opportunity came when Rose Marie Bravo, the owner of Burberry, offered him the design job. He joined Burberry in June 2001. His runway debut for Burberry was a relaxed presentation in a Milan palazzo that had playfulness as well as a return to Burberry's British roots. He has built on that concept while revamping the influences with contemporary silhouettes, fabrics and finishes. Bailey has also overseen the start-up of Burberry's immense 57th Street New York flagship store, opened in Fall 2002. This will enable Burberry and Bailey to move into the US market with a bang.

And Lauren Ralph Lauren has partnered with Mikasa for a collection that will debut in stores this spring. "We only enter into categories in which I have a personal interest," designer Spade says. "I do not have an interest in designing a clothing collection, yet I adore accessories. It is the sum of all details that makes an outfit, a dinner table, a bedroom etc. more interesting and special." Foley's picked up the Kate Spade china collection last month. A five-piece setting costs $109-$129. Foley's carries seven fine china and five casual patterns from Spade.

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/1995/06/cdfa.htm
FOR RELEASE: JUNE 9, 1995 FASHION DESIGNER GROUPS SETTLE FTC CHARGES OF PRICE FIXING The Federal Trade Commission made clear today that antitrust laws prohibiting price fixing apply to the fashion industry just as they do to other products or services. The FTC announced a settlement with the trade association representing most of the nation's best-known fashion designers and the organization which produces the two major fashion shows for the industry each year. The settlement includes provisions that would prohibit the two groups or their members from attempting to fix or reduce modeling fees as alleged by the FTC, and also would require them to take steps to educate fashion designers that price-fixing is illegal. The FTC complaint laying out its allegations names The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and 7th on Sixth, Inc., both based in New York City. In the complaint, the FTC detailed numerous meetings at which CFDA members allegedly discussed their desire to reduce competition among themselves for modeling services in order to reduce the fees they paid for models. In fact, the FTC alleged, although CFDA created 7th on Sixth in July 1993 for the legitimate purpose of producing centralized fashion shows twice a year in New York City, 7th on Sixth's executive director, who also held the same position at CFDA, actively scheduled meetings among designers to discuss and collectively demand from modeling agencies an agreement on modeling fees. Twice in September 1993, CFDA and 7th on Sixth allegedly met with representatives of the major modeling agencies and threat- ened to hire models through a collectively-organized "open call" unless the modeling agencies consented to accept prices agreed to by the respondents' members. (An open call effectively would have bypassed the modeling agencies and the models they repre- sented, the complaint states.) The modeling agencies capitulated in October 1993, the FTC alleged, and 7th on Sixth followed up on the agreement by sending a letter laying out the agreed-upon prices and other terms of compensation between fashion designers and modeling agencies. 7th on Sixth also issued a news release claiming credit for the agreement, the FTC alleged. The agreement was widely reported in the media. The price-fixing agreement was not ancillary to the legitimate purpose of producing the centralized fashion show and thus violated antitrust laws, the FTC alleged. The proposed consent agreement to settle the FTC charges, announced today for a public comment period before the Commission determines whether to make it final, contains provisions that would prohibit similar illegal conduct and require the respon- dents to take steps to educate their members, officers and directors that such conduct is illegal and prohibited by the settlement. As to the conduct provisions, the settlement would prohibit CFDA and 7th on Sixth from entering into, organizing, implement- ing or continuing any agreement to: raise, lower or fix the price, terms or other forms or conditions of compensation for modeling or modeling agency services; or encourage or assist anyone to engage in the above conduct. The settlement would not prohibit CFDA or 7th on Sixth mem- bers from employing the same models or jointly hiring models. In addition, the proposed consent agreement would require CFDA and 7th on Sixth to send a specifically-worded letter along with the complaint and settlement to all members, officers and directors of the organizations, as well as to 16 named modeling agencies, and to designers with whom they have discussed the benefits of joining 7th on Sixth. The letter would state that CFDA and 7th on Sixth "may not negotiate on behalf of fashion designers collectively with models or modeling agencies...and may not enter into or continue any agreement...for the purpose or with the effect of affecting the prices paid for modeling or modeling agency fees." Finally, the settlement contains various reporting requirements, including requirements that the respondents keep minutes of all meetings of their membership, boards, committees or subcommittees, noting the details and participants in any discussions of compensation for modeling or modeling agency services. These provisions would assist the FTC in monitoring the respondents' compliance with the settlement. The Commission vote to accept the proposed consent agreement for public comment was 5-0. It will be published in the Federal Register shortly and will be subject to public comment for 60 days, after which the Commission will decide whether to make it final. Comments should be addressed to the FTC, Office of the Secretary, 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20580. NOTE: A consent agreement is for settlement purposes only and does not constitute an admission of a law violation. When the Commission issues a consent order on a final basis, it carries the force of law with respect to future actions. Each violation of such an order may result in a civil penalty of $10,000. Copies of the complaint, proposed consent agreement, and an analysis of the agreement to assist the public in commenting are available from the FTC's Public Reference Branch, Room 130, same address as above. (FTC File No. 941 0007) (cfda)

BILL BLASS
William (Bill) Ralph Blass was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA in 1922. His father ran the local hardware store, but died when Bill was only 5 years old. He started sketching when very young, copying the dresses he saw in the movies and in magazines. After completing high school, he started sending his designs to companies in New York, and sold several. In 1939, when he was 17, he left the Midwest and went to New York, and started studying fashion design at Parsons School of Design. On graduation he worked as a sketcher for David Crystal, a Sportswear manufacturer, before being drafted for military service. In 1945, after the war ended, he moved to Anna Miller and Cio., as a designer. Mrs Miller retired in 1959 and by that time Bill Blass was her chief designer. Her company was merged with that of her brother Maurice Rentner. His designs were very successful, and the company began to be more and more in his image. In 1970 he bought the company and it became Bill Blass Ltd. Blass designed for a host of famous women, including first ladies Nancy Reagon and Barbara Bush as well as Candice Bergen, Barbra Streisand and Barbara Walters.

118. History Of Fashion Designer Martine Sitbon
Biography and career profile offered for the designer.
http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/sitbon.html
MARTINE SITBON
Martine Sitbon was born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1951. Her mother was Italian and her father French. She and her family moved to Paris in 1961, when she was 10 years old. In 1974, after studying at the Studio Bercot in Paris, Sitbon traveled extensively for 7 years, through Hong Kong, Mexico and India, but returned to France. Her early fashion education was gained in the second-hand markets of London and Paris. She set up her own house and showed her first collection in 1985. She paraded bloomers, pastel-coloured cloth coats and monk hoods down the runway. She was encouraged and assisted by her husband Marc Ascoli. He now designs the boutiques and showrooms of many of the leading designers in Paris. Fond of contrasts, Sitbon is a modernist whose clothes nonetheless have a sense of history. Her long jackets and riding coats are rigorously cut, with narrow shoulders and softened waistlines. She also likes to design long skirts and trousers with a controlled flare at the lower leg.
She joined the French house of CHLOE in 1987 and in 1988 she created her first collection for CHLOE. She had continued designing for her own label also. In 1991, she left them. She joined Byblos in 1998 and designed for them for four years, before leaving in June 2002.

120. History Of Fashion Designer Olivier Theyskins
Profile provided for the head designer at Rochas.
http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/theyskins.html
Olivier Theyskins
Olivier Theyskins was born in Belgium in 1977. He did a 6-month spell at La Chambre Fashion School. His fashion break came when Madonna fell in love with some of his dresses, shown to her by her stylist. She wore his yellow dress shown here, to the Oscar ceremony in 1999, when nobody had ever heard his name before. Theyskins first signature collection for Fall 2001, was a great success. Working with a palette where rust replaced black, he took inspiration from 1920's film idols like Jean Harlow and Greta Garbo. Though his dresses were grand and glamourous, the pieces were very wearable. His masterfully crafted Spring 2002 collection also showed that he is one of the sharpest talents in Paris. In November 2002, Olivier was appointed Chief Designer at the house of Rochas. His first collection will be Fall 2003. He replaces Peter O'Brien who was with Rochas for 12 years.
