    http://www.designerhistory.com/historyofashion/adrian.html
    ADRIAN
He was born Adolph Greenburg in Naugatuck, Connecticut, USA in 1903. He only used the name Adrian during his fashion career. Adrian studied at the School for Fine and Applied Arts, New York, which is now called the Parsons School of Design, New York. His parents sent him to the Parsons school in Paris and while he was there, in 1921, composer Irving Berlin invited him to design the costumes for the musical "Music Box Review". One year later, still a teenager, Adrian sailed back to the United States. First he worked in New York designing costumes for Broadway shows until 1925, when he went to Hollywood to make clothes for Rudolph Valentino. From 1926 to 1928, he worked for the De Mille Studios but shortly afterwards joined MGM where he became chief costume designer. It was at MGM that his talents really developed and he was one of the few top designers who could make both exquisite period costumes and also provide the elegant MGM stars with modern fashionable wardrobes. At MGM he designed for Greta Garbo for many years. For her role in A Woman of Affairs (1928) he created a Slouch Hat which influenced fashion for at least a decade. In Romance (1930) he dressed her in a velvet ostrich-feather trimmed hat, called the "Eugenie" which partially obscured one eye. This was a much copied style.

Global 500 Search: Topsites Japan This section has a number of profiles of people who have established themselves in the international fashion world. The number of profiles was getting so big that the page was becoming unwieldy. So, I've created separate pages for each designer. The names and pictures below should help you find the person you're looking for. Japanese design first made a real impression on the fashion world back in 1982, when some 12 designers showed their collections in Paris at the pret-a-porter (ready-to-wear) shows. Today's famous names, such as Issey Miyake, Kenzo, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons and Hanae Mori were not new but the collective works of the 'mode Japonaise' or 'Japonaiserie' movement made a big impact on contemporary fashion. Their use of inventive shapes and monochrome tones, particularly the use of black, shook the fashion industry. In the years since, only a few prominent names, such as Keita Maruyama have been added to this established list. These days, it's street fashion that's leading the way and young Japanese are as hip as their contemporaries anywhere in the world. But the established designers still play a big part in setting the trends for world fashion. Kawakubo Rei

BIOGRAPHY Ralph Lauren has become the epitome of classic fashion. With product lines such as Polo/Ralph Lauren for Men, Ralph Lauren for Women, Double RL, Ralph Lauren Home, and even Ralph Lauren paint, it makes us wonder who the man behind the label really is. Born Ralph Lifshitz on October 14, 1939, in the Bronx, New York, Ralph Lauren has come a long way from his days of sharing a bedroom with two of his brothers. Growing up in a middle-class Jewish family, Ralph and his three older brothers were raised by his mother, while his artist father painted houses. Lauren's fashion sense was apparent at an early age when he would purchase expensive suits with the money he earned working at his after-school job. Although he knew he could find his clothes at a less expensive price, he made it a point to look stylish in his expensive threads and he has succeeded at looking cool in his attire since the age of 12. One would think that Lauren attended fashion design school, but he actually studied business at City College in Manhattan, and dropped out short of receiving his business degree.

    TRAVIS BANTON
Travis Banton was born in 1894 in Waco, Texas, USA. He was educated at Columbia University and the Art Students League, New York. His early design career took place in New York with the couture house of Madame Frances and it was there that Mary Pickford chose one of his designs for the wedding dress which she wore when she married Douglas Fairbanks. For a while he worked with Hattie Carnegie. In 1924, he went to Hollywood and worked for Paramount Pictures as a costume designer for the film "The Dressmaker from Paris" (1925) starring Leatrice Joy. During the 20's he created costumes for many leading actresses such as Bebe Daniels, Pola Negri and Clara Bow. In the 30's he designed for Claudette Colbert, Marlene Dietrich, Kay Francis, Greta Garbo, Carole Lombard and Mae West. He became Designer in Chief at Paramount and set the hallmark of elegant, sensuous clothes, often cut on the bias. He left Paramount and joined 20th Century Fox in 1939 and stayed there for several years. He worked for Universal Studios from 1945 to 1948. During his film career, Banton designed costumes for more than 200 productions.
