Fashion Design Courses A cut above the rest
Studying fashion design is to enjoy an education and training that is demanding, challenging, and of the highest quality. British fashion education is regarded as the world's best in creativity, professionalism and diversity. Graduates are valued as innovators working towards the industry's future. Many graduates are offered positions with international designers and multi-national companies, in addition to the fortunate few who go on to become international names in their own right.
This quality and reputation is the result of a strong emphasis on the development of the individual and an understanding of craft and business practice within the context of historical and contemporary culture. Students are presented with a dynamic mix of inspirations and considerations; never easy, but never dull.

WHAT DOES A FASHION DESIGNER DO?
FASHION DESIGNERS create clothing and accessory designs. They may plan the production and marketing of their creations. Designers specialize in one type of garment or accessory such as men's or women's wear, children's garments, swimwear, lingerie, handbags, or shoes. Some high-fashion Designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. They make fashion news by establishing the silhouette, colors, and kinds of materials that will be worn each season. Other self-employed, high-fashion Designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. They design original garments as well as follow the established fashion trends. Designers who work for apparel manufacturers do less original work; they adapt fashions set by other Designers for the mass market. ... www.caljobs.ca.gov or at America's Job Bank at www.ajb.dni.us

Design and Fashion News Topics Introduction Projects ... Links Fashion Design in Germany Job Profiles and Training Centres Especially in an age of communicative and visual media, a person’s image is very important. Designing fashion means recognising peoples’ different needs and demands and requires a high level of creativity. Fashion design operates at the interface between the (technical) environment and people, highlighting the link that exists between clothing and society. It is fashion design that turns garments into fashion articles, and shoes and bags into fashion accessories. It covers all areas of men’s and women’s fashions, from avant-garde to ready-made, as well as sportswear, corporate fashion, children’s fashions, traditional costumes, stage costumes and accessories. The job of the fashion designer The occupational field of fashion designers encompasses planning and designing clothing in the broadest sense. In Germany, most of their fields of work are in the creative sector of the clothing industry. They range from designing selected prototypes and presenting, designing and developing fashion collections to cooperating in product management. In Germany, more fashion designers work in the ready-made clothing sector than in other countries. There are few independent fashion designers. In general, the focus of fashion design in Germany tends to be on “wearable, functional” garments, rather than on the “progressive avant-garde” apparel created by London designers, for example.

What is fashion design?
The fashion industry pivots on the ever changing, high-energy profile and excitement of the international design world. The brightest and best fashion designers rise to become global brand names, media personalities, business leaders or, ultimately, celebrated creative icons symbolising the unique look, feel and attitudes of their era. Fashion designers influence and respond to social change by setting trends in visual culture and global commerce. Fashion design is about expressing a passion for line, shape, texture, colour, drape and fabric, underpinned with a sensitive and astute understanding of design history viewed through the lens of contemporary culture. Designing for fashion is about creating innovative and inspiring garments that enhance the body, personality and character of individuals. Fashion also expresses the identity of different generations, groups and market segments within the diverse and vibrant society of today. Fashion designers travel extensively building global product knowledge and seeking cultural stimulation, while adapting the latest and greatest into every signature range they design and produce. Fashion students enter a stimulating environment where creative subjects such as fashion design, fashion drawing, textile design and colour are balanced with a thorough knowledge of pattern making and garment construction and fashion-specific computer aided design.

Textiles
The different types of textiles:
  • Cotton Wool Silk Nylon ... Polyester
  • A textile is a cloth, which is either woven by hand or machine. "Textile" has traditionally meant, "a woven fabric". The term comes from the Latin word texere , meaning to weave Fibers are the raw materials for all fabrics. Some fibers occur in nature as fine strands that can be twisted into yarns. These natural fibers come from plants, animals, and minerals. For most of history, people had only natural fibers to use in making cloth. But modern science has learned how to produce fibers by chemical and technical means. Today, these manufactured fibers account for more than two-thirds of the fibers processed by U.S. textile mills. Plants provide more textile fibers than do animals or minerals. Cotton fibers produce soft, absorbent fabrics that are widely used for clothing, sheets, and towels. Fibers of the flax plant are made into linen. The strength and beauty of linen have made it a popular fabric for fine tablecloths, napkins, and handkerchiefs.
