and Fashion Design THE FIELD Whether in vogue or traditional, couture or ready-to-wear, local or international, the runway designs and promotional campaigns of the fashion industry are always at the forefront of worldwide media and public attention. Professionals in the fashion industry have an eye for design and style, or a talent for advertising and public relations, that sets apparel and accessory trends. THE PROGRAM THEORY With a curriculum that allows you to tailor-make your own course of study, the program offers two areas of specialization: Communications Design First-year studies in Communications include apparel courses, an overview of the fashion industry, and marketing. In year two, you study graphic design, fashion illustration, photography, writing, oral communication, and the history of design. In year three, studies include fashion promotion, marketing communications, and the history of costume. In year four, studies include research into international markets, new venture startup, broadcast journalism, and intensified marketing and promotion courses. Electives include packaging design, fashion journalism, copywriting, and fashion event planning. In Design , you learn to do more than just sew or sketch concepts. Beginning in first year, you develop skills in advanced pattern making, couture design, textile design, computer-aided design (CAD), visual communication, business management, and fashion in international markets. In year two, concentrated studies are introduced in apparel design, evening and bridal wear, CAD design, CAD pattern draping, accessory design, and textile development. In year three you study tailored apparel, menswear, and leather. In year four you refine your ability to create visual communications, learn about starting your own business ventures, and study materials management (including sourcing materials, ordering, and cost management), grading, and fashion in international markets. Higher Education in Textile Art and Design
Over the past few years I have been compiling the following list of Textile Arts Programs. As you can see from the many empty spaces, this is a work in progress. The initial list was compiled from various College and University listings, the lists of owners from AVL looms and from CITDA (Computer Integrated Textile Design Association) and my own mailing list. Eventually I hope to list every Textile Arts program, the instructor(s), areas of study available and contact number and/or web page address. At this point I have limited the list to the US and Canada, but would welcome information from any program in the world.
If you have any information to add or corrections to make to this list, please email me at lstrand@siue.edu
