Apparel and Textile Design
Undergraduate Program The Apparel and Textile Design major provides students with professional preparation in designing apparel and textile soft goods. Students create and evaluate designs considering interactions among the person, the product, and the environments in which they are used. Students are taught to assess the needs, values, goals, and resources as they propose design solutions. Products are designed to promote comfort, performance, and aesthetic satisfaction. The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of life and the quality of the environment. Apparel designers in the twenty-first century will form new alliances with professionals in interdisciplinary teams. These teams may include apparel designers and biomechanical engineers, textile chemists and physicists, or medical scientists. Emphasis is placed on effective decision-making and communication with professionals in other disciplines, employers, employees, and clients. Computer-aided design technology is used to create innovative design solutions to functional and aesthetic design problems.

... Professional training FASHION ART ITALY is a cultural association a owned by a professional fashion designer, Serenella Fumanti , with twenty years of experience in the fields of textile, clothing, and fashion accessories. Our courses are developed from knowledge acquired from previous work experience within various fashion organizations and other companies. Utilizing this extensive knowledge, we have three different types of courses offered to meet the varying needs of those seeking entry into the world of fashion design, particularly within the Italian fashion industry. The aim of FASHION ART ITALY is to offer an educational program drawing on the spirit of the Renaissance. We achieve this by recreating the same type of work relationship that existed between the artisan and the apprentice during the Middle Ages. This teaching approach enables us to offer one-on-one instruction that passes on an "artisans inside knowledge to her apprentice." It is important to note that this teaching approach differs from the traditional methods found in schools, colleges, or universities, which usually involve lecture style learning environments. Instead, our approach is far more flexible allowing for greater personal development; however, students must be extremely motivated to make progress in this type of environment.

WHAT DOES A FASHION DESIGNER DO?
FASHION DESIGNERS create clothing and accessory designs. They may plan the production and marketing of their creations. Designers specialize in one type of garment or accessory such as men's or women's wear, children's garments, swimwear, lingerie, handbags, or shoes. Some high-fashion Designers are self-employed and design for individual clients. They make fashion news by establishing the silhouette, colors, and kinds of materials that will be worn each season. Other self-employed, high-fashion Designers cater to specialty stores or high-fashion department stores. They design original garments as well as follow the established fashion trends. Designers who work for apparel manufacturers do less original work; they adapt fashions set by other Designers for the mass market. ... www.caljobs.ca.gov or at America's Job Bank at www.ajb.dni.us
