The Faroe Islands 1525-1815
The Faroe Islands used to be a Norwegian sideland. Yet Norway was the junior partner in her Dynastic Union with Denmark. Foreign policy was a prerogative of the king, who resided in Copenhagen; the sidelands in the North Atlantic (the Faroes, Iceland, Greenland) came to be administrated from Copenhagen. In 1676 the island group, as a feudal estate, was granted to FREDERIK VON GABEL (-1708); between 1709 and 1720 it was administrated by a committee of three; between 1720 and 1775 the Faroes and Greenland were treated as one province; in 1776 the Faroes were separated from Greenland and allocated to Sjaelland province.
The reformation was introduced in the Faroes per decree - against the resistance of AMUND OLAFSON, the last Catholic bishop - the Faroese bishopric abolished; the now Lutheran community was to be headed by a provost. The Danish kings turned trade with the islands into a MONOPOLY which after repeatedly changing hands in 1709 was granted to the ROYAL DANISH MONOPOLY (owned by the king himself). For the protection of the islands' capital, TORSHAVN, FORT SKANSIN was built.

A.D. the islands were settled by Norsemen. In the early 11th cent. they became part of the kingdom of Norway and were Christianized. The population was nearly wiped out by an outbreak of black plague in the 14th cent. and was soon after replaced by Norwegian settlers. Along with Norway, the Faeroes passed under Danish rule in 1380, and they remained Danish after the Treaty of Kiel (1814) transferred Norway from the Danish to the Swedish crown. A nationalist movement in the 19th cent. led to the revival of Faeroese, a language akin to Icelandic, and there is an extensive native literature. In World War II, Great Britain established (1940) a protectorate over the islands after the German occupation of Denmark. After the war there was considerable sentiment for full independence, and following a plebiscite in 1946, the islands' parliament proclaimed independence. The Danish king dissolved the Lagting, and after a new parliament was elected, the proclamation was reversed. However, in 1948 the Faeroese obtained home rule from Denmark. Since 1953 they have sent two representatives to the Danish parliament. The Faeroes did not join the European Community (EC; now the

The early history of the Faroe Islands is not clear. It appears that about the beginning of the 9th century Grim Kamban, a Norwegian emigrant who had left his country to escape the tyranny of Harold Haarfager , settled in the islands. It is said that a small colony of Irish and Scottish monks were found in Suduroy and dispersed by him. The Faeroes then already bore their name of Sheep Islands, as these animals had been found to flourish here exceedingly. Early in the 11th century Sigmund or Sigismund Bresterson, whose family had flourished in the southern islands but had been almost exterminated by invaders from the northern, was sent from Norway, whither he had escaped, to take possession of the islands for Olaf Tryggvason , king of Norway. He introduced Christianity , and, though he was subsequently murdered, Norwegian supremacy was upheld, and continued till , when the islands became part of the double monarchy Denmark/Norway English adventurers gave great trouble to the inhabitants in the 16th century , and the name of Magnus Heineson, a native of Streymoy, who was sent by Frederick II , where remains of the cathedral may be seen; but it was abolished at the introduction of

    Short Notes on History
The population derives mainly from West-Norwegian farmers who settled here in the 9th century. It has been suggested that the Faroes were populated by Irish monks or hermits before this, but there is no archaeological evidence to support this view.
Christianity was adopted in AD. 999. In 1035 the Faroe Islands were incorporated into the Kingdom of Norway.
Together with Norway the Faroe Islands passed under the Danish Crown in 1380 and remained in the Kingdom of Denmark, even after 1814 when Norway came under Swedish rule.
1856 the Danish trade monopoly was abolished and the Faroe Islands gained the right to trade freely on their own. As a consequence a considerable fleet of fishing vessels was established. Fishing has ever since been the main industry and source of income.
In the latter part of the 19th century, a national movement gained ground. The first political parties were established in 1906.
In 1940 the Faroe Islands were occupied by British forces and thus separated from German occupied Denmark. The Faroese ensign , the MERKIÐ was approved by British Government decree in 1940.
