She and six fellow FMMs work in a parish of 120 parishioners of 23 nationalities. Here she discusses the controversial traditional whale drive. By Maria Forrestal FMM The Faroe Islands are not well known to many people, except perhaps those interested in fishing or whaling. The latter has certainly been a source of controversy. At the end of September, Dimmalætting , one of the national newspapers on the Faroes, featured several articles drawing attention to recent coverage of whaling in an English newspaper. The article, ‘When the Sea Foamed Red’ was written by a journalist from the Daily Mail who visited the Faroe Islands during a whale drive in Tórshavn in September, 2003. The article depicted the Faroese people as barbarians who kill whale simply for the pleasure of killing.

I can say that because i live in Iceland! In Place: Spatial and Social Order in a Faeroe Islands Community Published in Paperback by Waveland Press (January, 1996) Author: Dennis Gaffin Average review score: Useful For Academics This is a fine book about the wee islands in the North Atlantic. But beware: It's heavy stuff for those just looking for travel descriptions and easy-to-access material on the subject. Having said that it is a gem if you are interested in e.g Social Anthropology or other social sciences. An anthropologist explores daily village life Dennis Gaffin, an American anthropologist, spent a year studying the phenomenon of social control in an outlying Faeroese village. The resulting book is a surprisingly readable first-person narrative, not a turgid, theoretical work like so much academic writing. Gaffin's book is a description of how a small Faroese village functions - what people do for a living, their worldview, and the forces through which social norms are enforced. The topic of spatial order, to which the title refers, receives relatively little attention, with the exception that the author devotes a chapter to the issue of placenames. This book is principally about how a society pressures people to behave "properly" as defined in that culture.

By Peter Bjerregaard The population of Greenland was 56,124 in 2000. Of these, 49,369 (88%) were born in Greenland, which is the official proxy measure for Greenlandic (Inuit) etnicity. However, in recent years an increasing number of ethnic Danes have been born in Greenland while a similarly increasing number of ethnic Greenlanders have been born in Denmark . A study from the 1990s estimated that 97% of those born in Greenland considered themselves to be Greenlanders while 9% of those not born in Greenland considered themselves as Greenlanders and 17% as both Greenlander and Dane. The use of definition criteria (place of birth, identity or ethnicity of parents/grandparents) must be chosen according to the circumstances. The population pyramid for the indigenous population is relatively broad based until the age group 30-34 (figure 2.1). Around 1970 the very high fertility rates decreased rapidly which, in combination with relatively few women of childbearing age resulted in small birth cohorts. After the dramatic decrease, the size of the birth cohorts increased steadily from 1974 to 1995 but is now once more on the decrease. The population composition of the non-indigenous (Danish) population is very different. Men make up 70% of the non-indigenous population, and 79% of these are in the age group 25-59 compared with only 50% among the Greenlanders.

FAROE ISLANDS The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic 430 km south-east of Iceland, 600 km west of Norway and a good 300 km north of Scotland. The Faroes consist of 18 islands, of which 17 are inhabited. The geography and topography of the islands make transport and communication difficult. All Faroese towns and villages have electricity, of which two-thirds is produced in thermal plants (oil) and one-third in hydroelectric plants. The Faroes experienced a massive emigration in 1994 corresponding to 4.4% of the population, resulting in a population decline of 3.7%. The economy of the Faroe Islands is overwhelmingly dependent upon fisheries. Fishing, fish farming and fish processing account for a quarter of the gross factor income and almost 100% of exports. The Faroese language is a Nordic language closely related to Icelandic and to the dialects of Western Norway. Faroese is recognised as the official language, but Danish may also be used in all official connections and is taught in schools. The Faroe Islands have taken part in all the Island Games to date, and were one of the founder members when the Island Games Association was instituted in the Isle of Man during the First Games there in 1985. Popular sports include football, handball, rowing (in typical Faroese boats), volleyball, table-tennis, badminton, gymnastics, swimming and judo.

Faroe Islands Culture The Faroes have a proud cultural heritage, although Faroese was long regarded as a peasant language and the written form was not standardised until the 1890s. Life was hard, and after the chores were done there was not a lot of time left to write novels or paint portraits. The earliest Faroese music would be considered bland by modern standards, but it was designed to accompany the Faroese chain dance and the kv¦°i , a body of late medieval ballads. There are thousands of verses to these ballads and the chain dance requires knowledge of these verses to be properly performed. There were no instruments on the islands, and simple and repetitive melodies were commonly sung in a minor key. Today, traditional dancing is on the school curriculum and also takes place during the winter dancing season and on festive occasions to celebrate the islanders' unique identity. The chain dance was once popular all over Scandinavia, but has survived intact only in the Faroes. During the long and cold winter nights, people occupied themselves by reciting stories and poetry that had been passed down orally for generations. They were finally collected and written down in the 19th century. The first modern Faroese poet, N³lsoyar-Poul Poulson, wrote politically inspired ballads dealing with corruption and the troubled economics of the early 1800s. The best known writer in the short history of Faroese literature is He°in Brº, whose books are very popular in the islands and have gained acceptance abroad as well. J¸rgen-Frantz Jacobsen and William Heinesen are other well-known Faroese authors who wrote in Danish rather than their native language.

History
Main article: History of the Faroe Islands The early history of the Faroe Islands is not clear. It appears that about the beginning of the 9th century Grímur Kamban, a Norwegian emigrant who had left his country to escape the tyranny of Harald I of Norway , settled in the islands. Early in the 11th century Sigmund or Sigmundur Brestisson, whose family had flourished in the southern islands but had been almost exterminated by invaders from the northern, was sent from Norway, whither he had escaped, to take possession of the islands for
