BUK’s stay in Tórshavn was short, and unfortunately there was no time to visit any other institutions in the Faroe Islands on that occasion. But the Nordic guests still could get some idea of the surroundings both while sailing on board the schooner "Nordlyset", and on an outing to the historical Kirkjubøur.

In Kirkjubøur, in addition to the churches, stands the farm house, "Kongsgården", whose black tarred blockhouses date back from the Middle Ages. For 16 generations the estate has been in the possession of the family Paturssons. At the present moment it is inhabited by Sølvá og Páll Patursson, who generously treated the Nordic guests to coffee and pancakes at the long table in the old meeting room.
The room, which formerly used to serve as a meeting place for the episcopal residence, is used today on special official occasions; in the summer time it is also open for tourists.

As a stepping-stone on the viking trail from Scandinavia to North America or just as a welcome "pied ý terre" to those crossing the great ocean, the Faroe Islands is the green home for birds, sheep and people. And there, in the very centre of the islands, is Tórshavn. Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands
Since the early days of viking settlement more than one thousand years ago, the Faroese have met and held their parliament or "Thing" in Tórshavn. Tórshavn is said to be perhaps the smallest capital in the world (approx. 15,000 inhabitants), and as an administrative and political centre it may even be the oldest in Scandinavia. The old site of the Thing is on the headland in the middle of the harbour of Tórshavn. Today, the Faroese Government offices are in the old listed buildings on the very point of the promotory, while the Parliament is in an old wooden building in the centre of the town. Tórshavn is a modern town which, owing to modern communication and infrastructure, is not at all as isolated as it used to be during the past centuries. But it retains its unique character, fascinating, small and different from any other capital in the world.

    TV against all odds
The mere fact that the population in the Faroe Islands is so small, only 45,000 people, makes the Faroese Television company, Sjónvarp Føroya (SvF), a remarkable organization. But this small nation has its own culture and speaks its own language. These days, with innumerable analogue and digital TV signals shining down upon even this spectacular and dramatic landscape in the middle of the North Atlantic, it is vital for the Faroese language to have its own television station producing programmes in its native language and reflecting everyday life in the Faroes. The only Faroese TV
SvF is the national television company in the Faroe Islands and the only station based on the islands broadcasting in Faroese.
The station transmits about 40 hours a week, and like most public-service stations the range of programmes is wide, covering news, documentaries, entertainment, culture, sport and drama.
SvF produces a little less than 20% of all its transmissions and translates into Faroese about the same percentage of foreign programmes.

FAROE ISLANDS - The Rocky Isles of the North Atlantic For millions of years the Faroe Islands stood alone in the heart of the North Atlantic. The first settlers may have been Irish monks in during the seventh century. Better known and well documented is the Norwegian colonization, beginning about hundred years later and developing throughout the Viking Age, making the Faroes a central part of the Viking settlements along the coasts of the North Atlantic and the Irish Sea. The Viking settlers established their own parliament with local Tings in different parts of the islands. The main ting on Tinganes is Torshavn, a colorful thriving town, historical and picturesque, and one of the smallest and most pleasant capitals in the world. Situated in the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic at 62°00°N, the Faroe Islands lie northwest of Scotland and halfway between Iceland and Norway, a small island community, covering only 1,400 square km, with approx. 44,000 inhabitants. The Faroe Islands are one of the last places in Europe where everyday life brings what people elsewhere look for: Closeness, Nature and Peace.

The scene was both tranquil and untamed: the waves furiously pounding the Giant and the Old Witch, the towering sea stacks on Eysturoy island; yet move the eyes a fraction and there are sheep serenely grazing on the rolling hills of grass.
We are on the last unspoiled destinations in Europe: the 18 islands of The Faroe Islands northwest of Scotland, halfway between Norway and Iceland. Narrow sounds and fjords separate the islands.
John Eysturoy (like the island) is proudly showing us his country, its multi-coloured villages, its green hills and its craggy seaside cliffs, home to thousands of birds.
John’s knowledge and imagination has peopled these barren islands for us with figures from the past: from the first settlers said to have been Irish monks, probably in the middle of the 7th century, fast forwarding a hundred years to the time the Faroes became a central part of the Viking settlements along the coasts of the North Atlantic and the Irish Sea. Today it is officially labeled as a "self-governing community within the Danish Kingdom" but independence is a hot topic here.
Much of the heritage of The Faroe Islands reflects a medieval past, villages clustered around old churches are scattered across the islands. Look around you and you can still find old Faroese houses built of stone and driftwood, stone walls facing the prevailing winds, tarred wooden walls and turf roofs.

The Faroe Islands are formed from volcanic rock and the landscape mainly consists of cultivated grass. Apart from 3.5 million birds, the most popular one being the puffin, the Faroes share their green islands with 80,000 sheep, which graze on the Faroese mountainsides. Føroya actually means "land of the sheep" and the Faroese sheep are free-range animals in the true sense of the word. In places difficult to access they are only in touch with humans twice in their lifetime: when they are let loose as lambs and when they are herded together as fully-grown animals. An old Faroese saying has it that the sheep are a wandering barometer. They come down from the mountains to the sea when cool weather is coming, and they return to the mountains when warmer weather is on the way. The climate in the Faroe Islands is distinctly oceanic, with predominately cool summers and mild winters when the Gulf Stream keeps the waters ice-free. In autumn and especially winter there is plenty of rain and strong winds, leading to several hurricanes in the 1990s. Boat in front of church History and Politics
Vikings, who may have driven away an earlier colony of Irish monks, settled the Faroe Islands in the early ninth century. In the eleventh century the Faroes became a Norwegian fiefdom and Christianity was introduced. Denmark and Norway were united in 1380, and the Faroes came under Danish rule. When Denmark and Norway parted in 1824, the Faroes remained part of the kingdom of Denmark.

The Faroe Islands are situated in the North Atlantic 430 km south-east of Iceland, 600 km west of Norway and a good 300 km north of Scotland. The Faroe Islands are in the same time zone as Britain. The distance to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, with which the Faroe Islands have constitutional links, is about 1,300 km. The islands are of volcanic origin and part of the North Atlantic basalt region stretching from Ireland to Greenland. The Ice Age glaciers formed an archipelago of mountains, deep valleys, narrow fords and straits. The basalt covers older geological strata which may contain oil and gas. The climate is typical oceanic: humid, changeable and windy. In Tórshavn the temperature in the coldest month averages 3°C and in the warmest 11°C. The shortest day is 5 hours and the longest 19’/2 hours. There are no woods, but plenty of grass. A mere 6% of the land is under cultivation while the rest is reserved for the grazing of 70,000 sheep and some cattle and horses. Birds are plentiful, especially sea-birds, but other animal life is sparse. The sea around the Faroe Islands is influenced by the meeting of the warm Gulf Stream and cold northern currents, rich in nutritional matter. This guarantees rather stable ocean temperatures, between 5° and 10°C, favouring fish and animal life.
