Instructional Unit:
This field trip will introduce and reinforce the students' understanding of farm animals.
Curriculum Unit:
Grade 1
Science, Social Studies
Objectives:
The student will be able to: 1. Tell how two different farm animals help us. 2. Describe in at least three steps how lamb's wool becomes cloth. 3. Write four facts about a favorite farm animal. Pre-Visit Activities: 1. Several books about farms will be read to the class: A Farm by Aurelius Battaglia On the Farm by Richard Scarry The Animals of Farmer Jones by Leah Gale Pelle's New Suit by Elsa Beskow 2. Each child will construct a book about different types of cloth (wool, cotton, etc...). A fabric swatch will accompany the explanation of each material. On-Site Activities: Each parent guide will be responsible for 4 children. Each guide will have a map highlighting the different areas of the farm his/her group should visit. Each guide will also have a copy of the animal fact book provided by the farm. The fact books will be sent home several days before the field trip so the guides may become familiar with the information. Each guide will also get a list of questions they might ask their group. For example: How are goats and sheep alike? How are they different?

The National Colonial Farm
While many historical museums focus on the lifestyles of prosperous farmers, it is equally important to understand how a typical family of the late colonial period would have lived. The National Colonial Farm, an outdoor living history museum, was established by the Accokeek Foundation in 1958 to educate people about life on a middle-class tobacco farm of 1775. Skilled interpreters lead tours of the National Colonial Farm, highlighting the colonial structures, fields, gardens and animals.
Structures located within the colonial site and open to the public include: a circa 1780 farm dwelling, an 18 th century tobacco barn, smokehouse, necessary and out-kitchen. A public pier and riverside path provide visitors with scenic views along the edge of the Potomac River and a beautiful view of Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. An extensive garden features 18 th century varieties of herbs, flowers, and vegetables, and is the source for much of the Farm’s heirloom seed stock. Historic varieties of field crops such as Orinoco tobacco, Virginia Gourdseed corn and Red May wheat are cultivated on a seasonal basis. The National Colonial Farm is a recognized leader in the field of historic plant preservation. The National Colonial Farm is open throughout the school year for pre-scheduled guided tours. For Visitor Center hours and Public Tour information please call (301) 283-2113 ext. 28.
