North Carolina without tobacco barns would be like Holland without windmills. Tobacco has been an essential part of the state's economic and social history for three centuries. The leaf supported thousands of families for many generations and helped create cities, support universities, and build hospitals across the state. The traditional tobacco barn has long been symbolic of the crop's significance in Tar Heel life. The last quarter of the 20th century has brought enormous changes in North Carolina's tobacco industry. One major change has been in the ways that farmers cure their tobacco. Modern bulk curing systems have made virtually every traditional flue-cure tobacco barn in the state obsolete, and the abandoned barns are rapidly disappearing. Celebrate Tobacco Barns is a simple Web site to commemorate the importance of tobacco in North Carolina history and to encourage the selective preservation of old tobacco barns and other agricultural traditions in North Carolina. Links to related organizations, museums sites, and tobacco history sites.

Farm Museum On August 16, 2003 the Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Society, Inc. opened its Farm Museum to the public. The building is located behind the exhibit building in a metal barn that Joseph Mudd erected several years ago. The idea came from Danny Fluhart who thought it would be nice to display the farm tools that Mrs. Louise Arehart had donated, into their own building. From her items it has grown into a collection of various old hand tools and horse drawn farm machinery. Donations have been received from a number of Southern Maryland Citizens and the York County, Pennsylvania Agricultural and Industrial Museum. In the collection are two walking plows that Allan Mudd donated, which were used on the farm by family members. Should you have any old items to donate or place on loan, call 301-274-9358.
