CENDATA(TM) is an online data service offering the most current and widely used facts, specializing in press release and information on ordering the latest data products. Foreign Trade Division puts the entire monthly U.S. erchandise Trade Press Release and Supplement on CENDATA(TM). CENDATA(TM) is made available through cooperating private vendors, DIALOG and CompuServe, that provide nationwide access to information supplied by the Census Bureau through their own long-distance networks. They bill customers for time used on their system, but no extra charge is made for access to the census data. CENDATA(TM) is set up for very simple access: the user retrieves any of several thousand screensful of information simply by selecting appropriate items on a succession of menus. DIALOG also supports key-word searching, but neither vendor provides any mechanism for manipulating the data.

    Iowa State University
    Ames, Iowa 50011 An Overview

Iowa State was established in 1868 as a land-grant college. It enrolls about 25,000 students. The University has a long tradition in pioneering educational programs in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and engineering. Iowa State has offered master's degrees in economics since 1913 and the Ph.D. since 1925.
    The Community
The University is located in the center of Ames, Iowa, which has a population of about 49,000. Ames is 35 miles north of Des Moines. The community has 1,050 acres of parks, lakes, nature trails, and fitness trails. The New Rating Guide to Life in America's Small Cities recently ranked Ames second of 189 other small towns in America. The rating is based on factors such as climate/environment, diversions, economics, education, community assets, health care, public safety, transportation, and urban proximity.
    Programs of Study
Iowa State University offers programs leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in economics and agricultural economics. The combination of economics and agricultural economics is unique. It ensures that all students are given a solid foundation in economic theory and statistical methods while also allowing a broader spectrum of applied areas of study.
The M.S. program provides a firm grounding in macroeconomic theory, microeconomic theory, and statistics in the first year. In the second year, students concentrate on course work in applied areas. Students may choose either a thesis option or a nonthesis option. The thesis option requires 24 credits of course work and completion of a master's thesis. The nonthesis option requires 32 credits of course work and completion of a written research paper. Graduates obtain employment in government or industry in roughly equal proportions, while about one third go on to Ph.D. programs.

Summaries of Articles A Rice Farmer's Demand Behavior for Water
Toyonobu SATOH (Okayama University) This paper reports (1) The relationships between a rice farmer's water demand behavior and water pricing policies, and (2) How do labor market conditions influence a rice farmer's incentives for water saving.
If water tolls are charged on per irrigated acre basis, a farmer looses his incentive for efficient water use. To establish efficient water use, water tolls should be charged on the basis of each farmer's actual water use. However, a farmer will have incentives for efficient water use when he is institutionally allowed to sell his surplus water to the outside, even though water tolls are charged on per irrigated acre basis.
Through non-agricultural labor markets' development, a farmer comes on to evaluate the value of his labor by non-agricultural wage rates which are higher that those in agricultural sector. As the result, he prefers selling his labor to non-agricultural labor markets rather than utilizing his labor for water saving in rice production. Furthermore, if water tolls are charged on per irrigated acre basis, this tendency toward loosing incentives for water saving will be accelerated. A Quantitative Analysis on the Growth of Greenhouse Farms
Seong Ill HAN (Kyoto University) As is generally known, the number of greenhouse farms and the cropping lands of the greenhouse farms have increased in recent years. Such a characteristics of farm growth are summarized as follows. Firstly, the farm scale is enlarging remarkably. Secondly, the specialization of farm products is advancing and it shows a tendency to produce a higher-quality goods. But, on the other hands, it is fact that the consumption pattern of those products is changing drastically.

    Farm Management
    Current Situation
Mississippi agriculture operates within a diversity of soils and topography, aquifers, riparian and coastal zones, crop pests, and wildlife. This complexity also creates possible alternative uses and values for those resources. The State's political environment thus includes economic and political interests in agriculture, rural communities, urban development, outdoor recreation, and the environment. Mississippians face a number of important agricultural and resource policy issues. The state's farmers currently receive roughly $275 million per year in federal commodity payments. However, federal budget pressures and political shifts could limit future federal commodity programs. Mississippi agriculture is also subject to potential restrictions from the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Food Quality Protection Act and FIFRA, Conservation Compliance programs, state laws, and local restrictions. The U.S. Congress, the Mississippi Legislature, and local governments have been dealing with the following items affecting agriculture:

The U.S. Small Business Administration, established in 1953, provides financial, technical and management assistance to help Americans start, run, and grow their businesses. With a portfolio of business loans, loan guarantees and disaster loans worth more than $45 billion, in addition to a venture capital portfolio of $13 billion, SBA is the nation's largest single financial backer of small businesses. Last year, the SBA offered management and technical assistance to more than one million small business owners. The SBA also plays a major role in the government's disaster relief efforts by making low-interest recovery loans to both homeowners and businesses. America's 25 million small businesses employ more than 50 percent of the private work force, generate more than half of the nation's gross domestic product, and are the principal source of new jobs in the U.S. economy.
