... And Fresher! market management The Market Management Program continues to be our single most highly intensive program. The Federation served 43 member markets in 2003. Out of those 43 markets, 7 were fully managed by our association. Member and managed markets are listed within the Farmers' Market Programs Summary of the annual report. Year-Round Market Management Activities Detailed discussions relative to each managed market take place on a "per market basis" at individual market fall meetings and are published as meeting minutes and specific market rules. The following outline highlights points of particular interest on the overall association level:
  • Market start-up activities within each community (i.e. meetings, permit applications, contracts, Board hearings, etc.) Farmer/vendor application review and market placement Collection of market fees Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating of on-site market managers

Farmers' Markets
by S.A. Ensor and H. Winn
Quick Facts...
  • Careful organization and planning is essential in the development of a farmers' market. Consider various types of feasibility indicators in the market planning process. Compile a checklist of factors to study in organizing farmers' markets in order to help answer pertinent questions.
Direct marketing activities, such as farmers' markets, occur when the owner of the product assumes full direct-marketing functions in order to complete a sale to the final consumer. Farmers' markets offer many advantages for small-volume producers: opportunities for an increase in income, reduced transportation and distribution costs, an outlet for products that otherwise might not be sold or consumed, and direct interaction with buyers.
Planning
An organized farmers' market is the result of commitment, hard work and expertise. Contact local authorities about necessary local, state and federal licenses. Determine what the consumer demand is. A good variety of locally grown, high quality, fresh produce at competitive prices should be the basis of your preliminary planning. Your local county Cooperative Extension office is an excellent starting point. They can help with goal setting, decision making and effective communications among farmers. Consider the following when organizing a farmers' market:

Open Forum QUESTION: Who should be in charge of farmers markets? This question has come up in the controversy over management of the farmers markets in Marin County, California. FROM: Kelly O'Neill

Question: can farmers successfully manage a farmers market? Yes. But will they? To me, managing a farm profitably usually suggests plenty of management talent. If the farmers can agree on what is successful management, hard work is most of what they will need to succeed. I don't expect the "new management" at the Marin County farmers market will be free from all the hard decisions or differences of opinion past management encountered. The challenge may be to keep the diversity of opinions among the farmers from being dominated by a majority or by those few who have time to do the managing. Now that it is clear who is running things, I'd consider hiring help for the day to day management activities so the farmers can spend the time needed to make well considered policy decisions.

Plants of Central Queensland: Their identification and uses
This book clearly describes and illustrates 240 plants of central Queensland so that they can be readily identified in the field. To make the book easy to use, the plants are grouped into major types - ferns, herbs, trees, shrubs, and grasses. Plants of central Queensland has been written to help everyone in this prime grazing area who needs to make decisions about vegetation and land management. It is valuable resource for graziers, other land owners, naturalists, conservationists, anyone interested in land care and anyone else interested in Australian vegetation.
Crop weeds of northern Australia
Controlling weeds early in their growth is vital to farm management whether the weeds are in crop or fallows. Advances in conservation cropping and herbicide use have made the need to identify weeds at an early stage even more important. This easy-to-use CD-ROM illustrates the seedling stages and mature plants of about 150 weeds. It features a species index and an identifying key for the early and late seedling stages.

Farmers are seeding This is a busy time of the year for farmers as it is the time to plant the crop. Spare a thought for what could have been if GM crops were commercially released and farmers chose to market as non-GM. The procedure for rigorous cleanout regimes would be impossible as cleaning tynes, bins, augers etc would be time consuming and cost prohibitive. We have had our seeder working 24 hours/day for over 3 weeks, any delays would be too costly and not tolerated. 18.8 metre wide flexicoil airseeder 36 metre wide hydraboomspray The NSW government made restrictions for trials and Bayer Cropscience refused to participate in trials in NSW due to an unwillingness to compare their variety in an adverse season and unhappiness at restrictive conditions. (See here for NSW exemption order) Small comparison trials in South Australia and Victoria will be the only GM canola grown in Australia that is not under the strict restrictions of the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator. Neither state appears to have addressed liability for risk of loss to the states GM-status adequately, or insisted on independent review or insisted on post-harvest monitoring.
