This paper analyses the determinants of household farms’ participation in land rental markets in transition countries and what affects their access to land through rental markets. We derive several theoretical hypotheses on the impact of households’ management ability, land endowment, land quality and prices, transaction costs in the land market, rural credit and labour market constraints. We test the hypotheses combining a representative dataset on land rental activities of more than 1,400 Hungarian household farms with data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. We find that land rental markets reallocate land to households with better farm management capacities and less endowed with land. Households combine buying and renting of land to extend their farms. The continued domination of large farm organizations in some regions restricts household’s access to land. Rural credit and labour market imperfections have an important impact on land rental markets. Download Info To download: If you experience problems downloading a file, check if you have the proper

Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Agri-Environmental Policies About Information by Country Organic Agriculture: Sustainability, Markets and Policies Organic Agriculture: Sustainability, Markets and Policies Proceedings from an OECD Workshop, Washington DC, United States, September 2002. Organic agriculture is expanding in all OECD countries , and is one of the most rapidly developing market segments. It is no longer limited to farmers selling their produce at the farm-gate or through specialised stores, but has extended into the mainstream of the agri-food chain. It is seen by many as offering considerable benefits over other production systems, particularly with respect to sustainable development. Many countries have introduced policy measures to encourage and promote organic farming. But what exactly is the contribution of organic agriculture to sustainable development ? What issues should be addressed by policies? What are governments actually doing and how effective have their actions been? The recent OECD Workshop on Organic Agriculture examined these issues. It concluded that while organic agriculture is generally less stressful on the environment, good farm management is crucial. The economic performance of organic farms is mixed, with considerable variation in the yields achieved and the premiums received for products within and across OECD countries. This publication reveals that organic agriculture is disadvantaged by current agricultural support policies, and the proliferation of standards and labels has sometimes confused consumers and impeded trade. A key policy challenge is to ensure that both the positive and negative externalities of different agricultural production systems are taken into account.

Compost markets: Are they there? Definitely. But compost-marketing opportunities depend upon the type and quality of the product. By Jean Bonhotal
In the Northeast, sale prices for manure-based compost range from $8 to $35 per yard. Product management and quality, market proximity, type of livestock, bag or bulk sales, and marketing skills account for the price variance.
But how much a dairy makes by selling compost is only one economic return. A dairy may realize even greater economic benefit from cutting manure handling and spreading costs and from better management of nutrients and odor.
Decide on compost type
If your nutrient management plan includes composting, first decide how the compost will be used or sold. Do you want to sell product for nursery use, turf, vineyards, vegetable crops, roadside erosion control, on-farm, landfill cover or other uses? Options are almost unlimited.
Greenhouses and nursery operations require higher quality composts. And though this market pays more, it’s also a high-risk outlet. If the product’s nutrients and composition aren’t what you claim them to be, you could be liable for plant damage. Other markets are more forgiving. Turf, field crops and roadside erosion control can use compost that isn’t quite stable and has higher levels of some nutrients than what other markets want.

040401 Illinois Pork Plant Aims for New Markets
April 1, 2004 Rantoul, IL - A new farmer-owned packing plant aims to be the hog butcher to a very select crowd from the New York restaurant owner who wants every pork chop cut exactly the same to customers in Asia who want to trace the meat they eat all the way back to the barn. The $28 million plant, just two months old, is being closely watched to see whether it might become a model for improving Illinois' declining pork industry. By operating its own plant and taking hogs only from the 200 members of its cooperative, Meadowbrook Farms brings farmers closer to consumers willing to pay premium prices for high-quality meat, said Art Lehman, president of the Illinois Pork Producers Association and a member of the cooperative. Farmers are paid according to the quality and quantity of meat their animals produce, not by total weight of a live hog, the traditional method. "We think we can do as good or better job at policing ourselves, raising the right kind of animal, feeding it right," Lehman said. "If there is a demand for a certain type of product, we think we can do that because there is nobody between us and the packing plant." A meatpacking plant wasn't necessarily what hog producers had in mind when they began searching for new markets after hog prices plummeted in the late 1990s, said James L. Burke, president and chief executive officer of the cooperative.

Auckland, New Zealand I am involved in the production and manufacture of fresh, nutritious and delicious organic dairy products. Our 400 acre farm is situated in the Manawatu - a region renowned for its rich soils and temperate (if windy) climate. The farm has had no chemicals or poisons on it for 18 years. Instead it is farmed in keeping with the laws of nature in an holistic manner. Our cows get to keep their tails and their horns, graze a natural herbal ley and produce just under 1 million litres of milk per year. Up until 6 months ago, half of this milk was sold to our dairy company, Kiwi Dairies, the remainder being diverted to our on farm dairy where it is turned into Biofarm Acidophilus Yoghurts and Pasteurised Wholemilk. Today, all milk produced is processed into branded product on the premises. Business has never been better! Video 3.45 minutes Slide 1. The Role of the Rainforest Alliance in PROARCA/APM Tapping Green Markets to Encourage Corridor Conservation Many of the most innovative conservation initiatives in Central America and Mexico have focused on the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. The corridor, which stretches from southern Mexico to the border of Costa Rica and Panama, holds a treasure-trove of flora and fauna. It encompasses terrestrial and marine protected parks and reserves, along with privately owned wild lands. The Protected Areas and Environmentally Sound Products Component of the Central American Environmental Program ( PROARCA/APM ) is an ambitious, five-year effort started in 2001 to consolidate the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor by strengthening management of the area's parks, and by expanding both production of and market access for environmentally sound products and services. The Central American Commission for the Environment and Development (CCAD), whose members include the ministers of the environment in Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama, directs the project, with financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Rainforest Alliance are implementing the initiative. The Rainforest Alliance and WWF are working with producers and traders of certified, ecofriendly wood, coffee, bananas and seafood, as well as tourism operators.

Summaries of Articles A Rice Farmer's Demand Behavior for Water
Toyonobu SATOH (Okayama University) This paper reports (1) The relationships between a rice farmer's water demand behavior and water pricing policies, and (2) How do labor market conditions influence a rice farmer's incentives for water saving.
If water tolls are charged on per irrigated acre basis, a farmer looses his incentive for efficient water use. To establish efficient water use, water tolls should be charged on the basis of each farmer's actual water use. However, a farmer will have incentives for efficient water use when he is institutionally allowed to sell his surplus water to the outside, even though water tolls are charged on per irrigated acre basis.
Through non-agricultural labor markets' development, a farmer comes on to evaluate the value of his labor by non-agricultural wage rates which are higher that those in agricultural sector. As the result, he prefers selling his labor to non-agricultural labor markets rather than utilizing his labor for water saving in rice production. Furthermore, if water tolls are charged on per irrigated acre basis, this tendency toward loosing incentives for water saving will be accelerated. A Quantitative Analysis on the Growth of Greenhouse Farms
Seong Ill HAN (Kyoto University) As is generally known, the number of greenhouse farms and the cropping lands of the greenhouse farms have increased in recent years. Such a characteristics of farm growth are summarized as follows. Firstly, the farm scale is enlarging remarkably. Secondly, the specialization of farm products is advancing and it shows a tendency to produce a higher-quality goods. But, on the other hands, it is fact that the consumption pattern of those products is changing drastically.
