10 Rules for Succession Virginia Tech farm management specialists have compiled a list of rules that are generally used in successful transitions of the farm from one generation to the next. They are as follows:
1. Revenue/Net-Income Rule. Bringing in another person takes an estimated $150,000 to $250,000 in gross revenue, or $40,000 to $70,000 of net profit. 2. Three-to-Five-Year Rule. Transitions are twice as likely to be successful and the business four times more profitable when the family member works for someone else for three to five years. 3. Six-Year Rule. Move the successor into management and decision-making within six years. Farms that fail to do so are twice as likely to have an unsuccessful transition and are less profitable. 4. "Ripple Effect" Rule. When making changes to a growing business, overestimate the capital needs by at least 25% to allow for unexpected costs. It's also wise to overestimate the time to complete the change by 25%. 5. "Don Shula" Rule. Many fathers, like the former coach of the NFL's Miami Dolphins, stay too long before turning over the business. They run into the trap of doing business as usual and lose the cutting edge. The optimal time for ownership and management of a business is 30 to 35 years. 6. "You Can't Treat All Children Equally, But You Can Treat Them Fairly and Equitably" Rule.

Butler County Farm Management Consultations
Patrick Derdzinski, Butler County extension education director Farm clients contact Butler County Extension seeking counsel on sensitive farm management topics such as developing a new approach to leases, terminating leases, information on cattle markets, and crop insurance. Other requests include biosecurity issues for livestock operations, distance separation for livestock confinement buildings and much more. In response, the county extension education director offers one-to-one consultations with farmers and their families. Follow-up evaluations were conducted with these farm operations to determine client satisfaction, change in farming practices, and if appropriate, economic impact. Respondents were asked their level of satisfaction with the consultation. 12 evaluations were returned. Ten of 12 responded they were very satisfied the information was provided promptly. Nine of 11 said they were very satisfied the information was up to date. Ten of 11 said they were very satisfied with the usefulness of the content and 10 or 11 were very satisfied with how effectively the information and concepts and ideas were communicated to them. The other respondents answered they were satisfied and no one responded they were not satisfied.

Projected 2000 Organic Crop
Budgets South Central North Dakota

Individual Crop Budgets
The organic crop budgets for 2000 provide an estimate of revenues and costs for the organic production of selected crops in south central North Dakota. THESE BUDGETS ARE ONLY INTENDED TO BE USED AS A GUIDE. There is considerable variation in soil type and productivity, weather conditions, as well as management and organic production practices within this large mult-county region. Also, organic production probably has more variability in revenue, from both yield and price, compared to conventional production. Chemical pesticide and fertilizer cannot be used to subdue a pest problem or treat a nutrient deficiency. Strong premiums can be achieved with organic commodities, but the market is smaller than for conventionally grown crops and price discovery can be difficult. Therefore, EVERY INDIVIDUAL IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO DEVELOP HIS/HER OWN BUDGETS! PROFITABILITY and CASH FLOW budgets are shown because each provides valuable information to the producer. To fully understand the budgets, it is important that you study the explanations of how each item is calculated. Crop prices, direct costs, and the land tax and investment are best estimates for only the 2000 crop year, but crop yields are estimated at 75 percent of the historic average yields of conventional production and machinery ownership costs are an average for the total length of ownership.

Wheat markets harden
By Andy Doyle This is happening because "supplies of cheap wheat on offer for immediate sale are drying up as the harvest draws to a close," Paddy said. It is also helped by the fact that UK growers have opted not to sell at ridiculous prices. Demand for barley straw appears to have eased in many areas as short-term requirements have been met. However, prices are still holding similar. Pressure is coming back onto wheaten straw prices as the extra straw yield (about one 8x4x4 per acre) has resulted in more straw assembled than budgeted on. Meanwhile the harvest is not yet completed with winter wheat and some late spring barley still to be cut in the northern half of the country. Spring wheat harvesting is nearly completed in the south.
