The farm business environment is more competitive and more international in scope than ever before. Managers must not only be highly skilled and knowledgeable of production techniques, but have to confront many complex financial decisions. Farming is a business with considerable uncertainty and risk. The major goals of this ERS research program are to provide objective and timely economic analyses of the financial conditions in agriculture, to assess how current and emerging production technologies affect farms and whether these changes pose special risks to farm financial viability, and to determine whether farmers' use of adaptive management strategies contributes to economic success. The dynamic policy and economic environment in which farms operate presents many challenges for successful farm management. Markets have become more international, market linkages are more formalized, and farms continue to be more industrialized. The 1996 FAIR Act has eliminated links between income support and farm prices and lessened institutional constraints on individual farm decisionmaking. As a result, farmers are confronting greater risks and greater flexibility to make changes in their business plans and organizations.

Significant Points
  • Modern farming requires knowledge of new developments in agriculture, and work experience acquired through growing up on a farm or through a small number of internships now available.
  • Overall employment is projected to decline because of increasing productivity and consolidation of farms.
  • Aquaculture and horticulture should provide better employment opportunities.
  • Developments in value-added marketing and organic farming are making small-scale farming economically viable again.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top American farmers, ranchers, and agricultural managers direct the activities of one of the world’s largest and most productive agricultural sectors. They produce enough food and fiber to meet the needs of the United States and produce a surplus for export. Farmers and ranchers Responsibilities of farmers and ranchers range from caring for livestock, to operating machinery, to maintaining equipment and facilities. The size of the farm or ranch often determines which of these tasks farmers and ranchers will handle themselves. Operators of small farms usually perform all tasks, physical and administrative. They keep records for management and tax purposes, service machinery, maintain buildings, and grow vegetables and raise animals. Operators of large farms, on the other hand, have employees who help with the physical work that small-farm operators do themselves. Although employment on most farms is limited to the farmer and one or two family workers or hired employees, some large farms have 100 or more full-time and seasonal workers. Some of these employees are in nonfarm occupations, working as truck drivers, sales representatives, bookkeepers, and computer specialists.

OUTREACH AND EXTENSION PROGRAMS Business Planning for Maryland Agribusinesses This program provides managers of commercial farms, small farms, greenhouses, and nurseries with education and assistance in developing effective business plans for their businesses. A business plan is a detailed, written document that will help them manage their operations in the short-term and long-term. It is an organized collection of all the important ideas that include mission statements, annual goal statements, resource inventories, marketing plans, production plans, financial plans, and business structure plans. Hardcopy and electronic materials on business planning are available to Maryland farm managers. Dairy Farm Management Program - This program provides specific financial and business planning tools to Maryland dairy farm managers. Workshops are tailored specifically for dairy farm managers. Additional analytical tools have been developed to help dairy farm managers manage their operations. The Maryland Dairy Farm Business Summary is a major component of this program. In this summary, dairy farmers are taught how to use their IRS Schedule F tax forms to analyze the financial condition of their farms. The information on their tax schedules is converted to a per cwt basis so that they are able to see the specific strengths and weaknesses of their businesses. They are also able to compare their businesses with other dairy farms in Maryland and in the northeast to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Farm management research for small farmer development manual focuses on research methods appropriate for small farm analysis and its orientation to determining the needs of small farmer development. Related materials are available which describe the bridge between farm management and systems approaches such as Farming Systems and Farm Management for Asia: A Systems Approach . The purpose is to provide Ministry of Agriculture personnel and field staff of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society with materials on the basic principles and tools of farm management economics. It is expected that with this exposure to farm management economics, they will be better equipped to assist farmers in improving their farm management skills and competitiveness.

Evaluating Opportunities for Niche Markets
Stan Ernst, Program Manager
Dave Hahn, Professor
Agricultural, Environmental, and Development Economics A couple times each generation, we see a flurry of interest in "niche markets," products promoted with the idea of bringing new revenue to rural America. From where we sit, three related sets of issues offer good signals for evaluating the "next big thing" for rural Ohio. This article touches briefly on some things we're being asked more frequently about by food consumers and producers. Evaluate your idea by considering consumption trends, basic demographics, and health-related issues. Consumption Trends. Demographic Trends. It's no secret that . By 2030, one-in-five Americans will be a senior citizen. Look around your family or job. Boomers are generally well off financiallythey'll be the bulk of the 8 million households with $100,000-plus incomes in 2010. Income is the major determinant in food spending, and since a lot of these folks' income is investment based, the general economy matters to food demand in the next decade. They're inclined to eat out because it's convenient. Despite financial conservatism, Boomers want what they like. They'll pay for food experiences and ingredients they loveor remember from childhood. Nostalgia is important to themtheir food preferences are likely to be regional and based on their roots. But they've moved around enough to broaden tastes somewhat. As more Boomers move "home" in retirement, they'll bring demand for foods and ingredients that are not traditional to the area.
