Economic decisions have invaded farm production and business management. The traditional manager is challenged to continually evaluate the economic consequences of production decisions, management methods, and marketing strategies. Specialists in farm management have had difficulty getting audiences to economic educational programs, depending primarily on production topic meetings to broach the economic issues. Producer meetings and field days attract far more participants than meetings on management topics. Farm management specialists need to find a way to bring economic education to these everyday events to reach a larger number of producers. Every field day, tour, and on-farm demonstration represents an opportunity to teach everyday economics to farmers. Kansas State University area agricultural economists are using "fill-in- the-blank" posters to show production costs and returns for crop and livestock enterprises at research station field days and during on-farm demonstrations. Machinery and equipment lined up for show or to make room in the shop for visitors during these events display placards listing the costs of machine ownership and operation. Grain handling facilities, livestock confinement systems, dairy barns, and other farm real estate improvements bear similar posters showing the costs, expected useful life, and per unit production costs of building, maintaining, and paying taxes on these improvements.

    Animal Health Economics Team
Our mission is to improve the competitivity of farm businesses through better management of animal health. We believe that this can best be achieved by shifting the focus of agricultural research from supply side to demand side considerations. By doing this, agriculture can respond positively to growing consumer concerns about food quality, food safety and animal welfare while at the same time addressing the challenge of increasing competition due to globalisation of food markets. Our approach is to integrate concepts and tools of economics with those of science through close collaboration with the Veterinary Epidemiology Team and with other scientists and economists both within SAC and elsewhere. Economics provides a means to understand the role of human decision making in biological systems. It is therefore an essential component of research in veterinary epidemiology.
    Main Areas of Interest
  • Effects of globalisation and consumer demand on risk and risk management in agriculture and the food chain with particular reference to the changing nature and perception of risks associated with farm animal disease.

    Department of Horticultural Economics
The Department of Horticultural Economics is composed of two divisions: Horticultural Business Management and Information Science, and Bioresources Economics. The former division consists of three laboratories: Farm Management, Agricultural Information Science, and International Agriculture Studies; and the latter of two laboratories: Agricultural Economics, and Agricultural Marketing. The Department as a whole intends to cover, in its fields of study and research, all the social-science-related aspects of horticulture/ agriculture, natural resources and environmental issues. Our department benefits from the other departments in the Faculty, because the research of natural-scientific fields is vital in understanding the complicated social issues revolving around horticulture/ agriculture. The Department of Horticultural Economics is the smallest department in the Faculty, with only 12 staff members and 128 students. The research and teaching in this department is based on the basic and applied fields of agricultural economics and management. The research fields of agricultural economics have been expanded to include not only agricultural production but also agri-business and marketing. In addition to conventional topics of agricultural economics in Japan, particular emphasis has recently been placed on research fields such as agriculture in foreign countries (including the developing world), and trade-links of economic development. The method of econometric analysis has recently been applied to agricultural economics and management, in accordance with the development of information science.
