Agricultural Economics
About farm management and enterprise budgets
by Lize Ferreira Farm management comprises all the processes that are concerned with the management of the production factors of a farm business, namely land, labour, and capital, in order to attain certain objectives. The Directorate: Agricultural Economics concentrates mainly on capital as a production factor. Various computer programs and models are used to draft enterprise budgets for a variety of enterprises. Enterprise budgets are a very handy tool when planning a new enterprise or determining the profitability of an existing enterprise. We can either use a standard enterprise budget as a template for a specific farm business, or we can design a new enterprise budget that takes your unique circumstances into consideration. Current projects Description: The compilation of enterprise budgets for potato growers in the snack food industry.
Project leader: Wessel Lemmer Description: The management and maintenance of the Micro COMBUD program.
Project leader: Lize Ferreira Description: The updating and correction of Micro COMBUD budgets, as well as the drafting of new ones.

    Aims and Scope
Aquaculture Economics and Management is a relatively new journal. The Journal provides the first single forum for aquaculture economics and management related papers – especially those of an applied nature. The Journal publishes original, high-quality papers related to all aspects of aquaculture economics and management including aquaculture inputs, aquaculture production, farm management, processing, distribution, marketing, consumer behaviour, pricing, government policy, modeling, international trade, transfer of technology, international cooperation, and environmental impacts. Papers are peer-reviewed and evaluated for their scientific merits and contributions. Country and species reviews are also welcome. The inaugural issue was published in March 1997. The aim of the first issue was to provide a comprehensive review of applications of economic analyses to the management of aquaculture in both the private and public sectors. The set of invited papers covers the history of the various approaches from the viewpoint of applications, the current state-of-the-art, and future prospects.

    Current Situation
Mississippi agriculture operates within a diversity of soils and topography, aquifers, riparian and coastal zones, crop pests, and wildlife. This complexity also creates possible alternative uses and values for those resources. The State's political environment thus includes economic and political interests in agriculture, rural communities, urban development, outdoor recreation, and the environment. Mississippians face a number of important agricultural and resource policy issues. The state's farmers currently receive roughly $275 million per year in federal commodity payments. However, federal budget pressures and political shifts could limit future federal commodity programs. Mississippi agriculture is also subject to potential restrictions from the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Food Quality Protection Act and FIFRA, Conservation Compliance programs, state laws, and local restrictions. The U.S. Congress, the Mississippi Legislature, and local governments have been dealing with the following items affecting agriculture:
